SUMMER NEWSLETTER

Tidings ~ 2013 ~ Lighthouse

Martha had three sons, Mike, Matt, and Max. For her upcoming

milestone birthday, Mike bought his mom a big house in which to live. Matt bought his mom a fancy car. Max, seeking to be creative, thought about his mom’s love of reading the Bible, so he traveled around the world to find a talking parrot that memorized the whole Bible. The parrot was so trained that all his mom would have to do is name the chapter in the Bible, then the par-rot would do all the work.

On her birthday, Martha said, “Mike, I’m an old lady. Thank you, but I don’t need a big house and will have a difficult time taking care of it.” “Matt, I’m an old lady. Thank you, but I won’t be driving much at all.” “Max my dear, thank you for the special chicken. It was delicious!”

Yes, it is an old joke, but it can serve as food for thought. Do we realize and recognize the gifts we have from God? James wrote, “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” We can make a long list of gifts from God: faith, music, creation, love, prayer, family, the Holy Spirit, and remembrance, just to name a very few.

At times, maybe we take gifts from God for granted. Do we recognize and express our gratitude for God’s gifts? A young man was given a dictionary for his birthday. Asked if he liked it he responded, “It’s a great gift, but I just can’t find the words to thank you enough.” We cannot express enough gratitude for the gifts God gives and yet we can express gratitude anytime they come to mind.

This summer we will continue to celebrate the gifts of salvation and new life brought by the death and resurrection of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit in our midst. In preparation for our Church Conference in September, I am asking us all to look at the ways God has gifted us: evangelism, music, creativity, love, prayer, skills, leadership, service, hospitality, outreach…or maybe there is a gift or talent you feel could be used to further the ministry of Christ. These gifts are blessings for our life and can be shared blessings as we live out the Christian life.

Please fill out the enclosed survey to let us know how you are and may be willing to graciously share

the gifts, talents and abilities with which God has blessed you. Let us give joyful witness to the Giver.

A date for Church Conference has been announced. On Sunday, September 29th a joint conference for Trinity and Pennsauken United Methodist Churches will be held at Trinity UMC at 7:30pm.

Be sure to join us for worship on July 21st for

a hymn sing featuring favorite hymns as

chosen by you, the congregation.

There is still time to cast your ballots for your

favorite hymns. Ballots are available in the

chapel area and are due by July 7th.

Collingswood

Manor

On Wednesday, May 22nd Church Ambassadors to the Collingswood Manor met at the manor to be updated on the state of Methodist Homes in New Jersey. The Rev. Barry Wehrle is the coordinator of the Ambassador/Church Connection Program.

As you may know the application fee for entrance into the manor is waived because Trinity is part of this program. During our meeting it was brought up that many of our church members are unable to qualify for entrance into the manor. It was stated that Methodist Homes of N.J. is providing 5 million in charitable contributions for care through the fel-lowship fund for residents who can no longer pay for their care. Only a million and a half is raised from donations from churches and individuals. Therefore to continue the level of care that is pro-vided presently, fees must be kept at these levels.

Each church in our conference is “expected” to send $2.50 per member to the fellowship fund. This is why we have asked for your donations dur-ing May. At the same time, Methodist Homes of N.J. has new staff that is actively trying to raise money from foundations, charities etc.

Barbara Wrzeszcz, Marketing Director at the manor announced that there was a new director, new head chef , new head of nursing and expanded hours for Dr. Rich Leaver, the chaplain. Dr. Leav-er, ministered to Trinity. He has developed a pro-gram titled, “How to Hold the Hand of a Dying Per-son.” His wish is that no resident die alone. He is looking for persons to take this training.

The Manor Auxiliary also sends a donation to the fellowship from the proceeds of the Fall Attic Sale. The Auxiliary will once again have the Attic Sale on Saturday, Nov. 3rd. I will be asking for donation of household items. No clothing or extra large items please. The jewelry table appreciates your dona-tion as well as the bake table.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients in an oven-safe baking pan and mix gently. Cover & bake until mixture is thick and bubble, about 30 minutes. Serve hot. Serves 4.

Beyond baked beans - Other ways to add beans to your diet: Toss beans and diced veggies (such as celery, shallots, & red peppers) with vinaigrette for a bean salad. Add beans to pasta dishes. Blend cooked beans with tomatoes, onions, and your favorite seasonings to create a delicious bean soup. Top a green salad with 1/3 cup of your favorite bean. Puree beans with a bit of olive oil, a garlic clove, your favorite seasonings and a little salt for a dip or sand-

wich spread. Add beans to eggs. Top with avocado and salsa! Add 1/4 cup pureed beans to your favorite pancake, waffle, muffin, or cake recipe. You'll be surprised at

how moist and springy baked goods are when baked with beans. You may use canned beans or dried beans. If you use canned beans – always drain and rinse. If you are

new to dried beans:

Wash and soak dried beans for 8-12 hours before cooking. Rinse beans, fill a pot with fresh water, bring to a boil, then skim off the foam. To aid digestion, add kombu (a sea vegetable), bay leaf, cumin, anise, or fennel to the water. Cover and simmer for the suggested time on the package. If you add a little salt, add it at the end of cooking (about 10 minutes before the beans are

done) or it will interfere with the cooking process. Barbara Wilson, RD, CDE

July is National Baked Bean Month

You have all heard the saying “Beans, beans, they’re good for your heart! Well, it’s true, they are loaded with nutrients! Beans (Kidney beans, pinto beans, navy beans and black beans, etc.) are an important part of a healthy diet and an excellent source of protein, fiber, potassium, folate, calcium, iron and antioxi-

dants. In biblical times, they were even more important as a staple food.

Now, I am not recommending canned pork and beans! If you buy a canned baked bean, choose vegetarian

beans and drain off most of the sauce This will help to limit the sugar and salt from the canned beans.

Traditional Baked Bean Recipe

½ tsp oil ¼ cup chopped onions ½ tsp dry mustard ½ tsp black pepper 3 Tbsp cider vinegar 1/3 cup molasses 2 cups cooked white beans (if canned, drain and rinse)
