any people believe that hearing loss is an inevitable part of the aging process and

many consider it a condition that can be dealt with passively.

However, new research studies have shown that there are consequences to untreated hearing loss than can have a far greater impact than ever thought.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s – John Hopkins University conducted a study that showed accelerated rates of shrinkage of grey matter in the brain, which is responsible for processing sound and speech in addition to memory and sensory integration.

Falls – A study conducted by Dr. Frank Lin and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that participants ages 40-69 showed that people with a mild hearing loss (25 decibels) were nearly three times as likely have a history of falling. Every additional 10db of lost hearing increased the likelihood of falling by 1.4 times.

Cardiovascular – Framingham Study by Boston College found a significant association between low frequency hearing loss and cardiovascular disease. Low frequency hearing loss was associated to intracranial vascular pathology (stroke and TIA), peripheral vascular disease, coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction (heart attack).

What’s Happening at HBS

OWalk4Hearing

n behalf of Team Hearing, Balance and Speech Center we’d like to take

a moment to say thank you so much for coming out to support the Hartford Walk4Hearing.

It was a great day filled with excitement. The Hartford Walk4Hearing raised over $80,000 to support programs and services in the Hartford area. Team HBS raised $550, so a BIG thank you for the generous support of our family, friends and patients.

Clean & CheckHave you had your 3-Month Clean & Check Appointment?

June 8th – Janice Howard volunteered for the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes event where she performed hearing tests for the athletes.

June – Dr. Bauman taught two conferences in Chicago for the Tinnitus Practitioners Association.

June 18th – Dr. Bauman presented at the New Haven Senior Network about Hearing and the Brain.

On August 4th Dr. Bauman will be on the Faith Middleton Show to discuss Seth Horowitz’s book “The Universal Sense: How Hearing Shapes the Mind.”

Diabetes – The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that people with Type 2 diabetes were 2.51 times more likely to have a hearing loss.

With those kinds of statistics people with an untreated hearing loss should do something sooner, rather than later. Hearing loss is a condition that can be treated with hearing aids. A hearing healthcare professional will be able to conduct a hearing test and evaluation for hearing aids. Not only will this improve overall health, but also quality of life.
