PET ADOPTION We place safe, healthy animals in responsible homes with the expectation that adopters will provide quality and lifelong care. Our process includes an adopter questionnaire and an agreement detailing the care every animal should receive.

ANIMAL SURRENDERWe accept unwanted animals from Schenectady County residents. A contribution of $25 per animal is requested to offset the cost of care that we provide, an average of $200 per animal.

Our work at the shelter is incredibly rewarding as, in most cases, we are helping an animal or a person improve their situation. With every adoption that oc-curs, we see a companion animal with a personality all its own and on its way to becoming a beloved part of a new family. Before that happens, we spend our time with the animal, often providing much needed medi-cal care and vaccinations, and all the while showing love and affection. We are often puzzled why some of these wonderful pets end up with us at the shelter. If you are looking for a new member of your family, please come and see us and let us help you find your new best friend. In recent months, we have increased our work with the dogs, providing more training and interaction to en-hance their basic training and improve their adoptabil-ity. This work also has the added benefit of increasing the staff knowledge of the animals in our care, adding to their dog behavior and training knowledge and en-hancing their commitment to the APF. It’s a win/win for all. If you want to know more about our work with the dogs, please give me a call at 518-374-3944 x110. We LOVE our volunteers and are continually seeking

We are looking for fosterers, dog walkers, cat socializers, adoption assistants, gar-deners, etc. We also need assistance with our on-going fund-raisers with bottle redemption, jewelry sales, and toner cartridge redemption. There are a multitude of opportunities to assist us. Come join us! Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Denise Altobelli ,at 374-3944 x118.

IS IT OKAY TO GIVE CATNIP TO MY CAT EVERYDAY?

Catnip is part of the mint family and it is transferred through the nasal system to the brain, and produces a “pleasure inducing experience.” Most cats react to catnip, but some have no reaction. The effects last about ten minutes. Catnip encourages exercise and play. Catnip can be used to entice cats into their carrier for vet visits as well. Unlike some drugs, catnip does not seem to be addictive. Daily exposure may lead to loss of sensitivity and cats becoming less interested in it. Although overdose does not seem to be a concern, moderate use is recommended. A small amount, every couple weeks, as a special treat is best. It is not advised to use in cats with a history of seizures or cats that are preg-nant. Although non-toxic, it can cause GI upset. If diarrhea or nausea are noted, discontinue use.

MY NEW CAT IS SO RAMBUNCTIOUS AT NIGHT WHILE I AM TRYING TO SLEEP. WHAT CAN I DO?

Unfortunately, cats are nocturnal by nature, but there are steps that we can follow to help try to manage this normal cat behavior.

1) Don’t reward the wrong behavior. Getting up to feed them, play with them or even chasing them out of the room are a reward to them, because they have gotten your atten-tion/reaction.

2) Provide enough exercise and stimulation earlier in the evening. Cats like toys that stimulate chasing a prey best. Cats can also be clicker trained. Treats and attention are a great reward.

3) Provide daytime activities in your absence. Food dispens-ing toys are great ways to accomplish this. These type of toys stimulate a wild feline’s hunt-catch-consume behavior.

4) Manage your cat’s environment at night. If your cat is very active at night, try confining your cat where it cannot disturb you.

5) Don’t punish. Focus on teaching your cat what is appro-priate and ignore bad behavior, rewarding positive behavior within three seconds.

Ask The VetTheresa Tommell, DVM, APF Director of Shelter Veterinary Services answers some common veterinary questions related to medical and behavioral issues.

Colleen Keating spent the last five years doing fund raising for the Capital District YMCA. Her last position at the Y was the Director of Major and Planned Gifts where she was responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of the Y’s annual giving and

major gifts campaigns. She started at APF on April 6th, 2015.

“Taking on this position at the APF combines my passions—fund raising and animals,” said Keating. “It’s amazing to come to work and help support those who love animals and have an impact on their lives.”

The Animal Protective Foundation has hired two new key staff members. Colleen Keating is now the Foun-dation’s Director of Development and RayLynn Bradi-gan is the new Shelter Director.

Deb Balliet, Executive Director of the Animal Protec-tive Foundation, said "Colleen and RayLynn are both strong, passionate advocates for animals. I am pleased that we are able to attract such top-notch talent to help us address pet overpopulation and to provide care to animals in need.”

RayLynn Bradigan is a highly expe-rienced animal welfare professional who has worked in large, nationally recognized animal shelters. She comes from St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, NJ where she was Director of Op-erations. Before that, she was the Foster and Transfer Manager at the SPCA of Texas. She started at the APF on April 28th, 2015

“My goal is to deepen our relationship with the community by bringing the best in shelter standards and operations to the APF,” said Bradigan.

APF Holds Remembrance Service in Honor of Those Lost in Jay St. FireRecognizing that many have suffered from the loss of animals and friends in the Jay Street Fire, the Animal Protective Founda-tion held a remembrance service in honor of the victims on Saturday, March 28th at the shelter.

“We need to remember the animals and the people who perished on March 6th in order to help the community grieve and heal,” said Deb Balliet, Executive Director of the Foundation. “No one will be able to walk along Jay St. for quite some time with-out remembering what we lost there.”

The ceremony began with votive candle lighting in remembrance of those lost—animals and human--followed by a wel-come by Balliet and some time for prayer and reflection led by Father Harold Reed of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Schenectady. Estelle Giles-Monroe, MSW., LCSWR, who is a pet bereavement counselor, closed the ceremony. Community and APF board-member, Sheila McGee, was also on hand with her therapy dog, Micah, to help peo-ple through the event.

Attendees brough a photo of a person or animal they wanted to remember to the service. Reportedly, there are still a possible 7 missing pets from the blaze.“I want to take a moment to thank Susan Burleigh for setting up the Jay Street Miss-ing Pets website and Facebook page,” said Balliet. “We’ve been working together to create a caring community.”

Pet Bereavement Support Group Meets Every MonthIn response to the public grief over the loss of animals in the March Jay St. fire in Schenectady, the Animal Protective Foun-dation began a Pet Bereavement Support Group. The group is available to anyone in the community and meets at the APF, 53 Maple Ave., Scotia, on the third Wednes-day of each month.

“As we organized the March 28th Jay St. Animal Remembrance event, it became clear that there’s a need for a support group for anyone who has lost an animal. The pain and grief of losing a loving and beloved pet are real. This group will help people heal,” said Deb Balliet, APF’s ex-ecutive director. “I want to thank a group

of our dedicated donors who have un-derwritten this important support group through the end of 2016.”

The group is led by Estelle Giles-Monroe, MSW, LCSWR who spoke at the March 28th event. Giles-Monroe has extensive experience in this area. Her adopted shel-ter dog and APF alumni, Mary, will also be at the support group to help.

For more information please email [email protected] or call the APF at 374-3944 ext. 102.
