The Teacherof the Year Award is given to a teacher in the Claymont School System. This award is based on the quality of teaching, impact on students, commitment to the educational process and the pursuit of lifetime learning and is based on nomination by his/her peers.

Rita McPeak (C ’75) is the 2016 Citizen of the Year Award. This award is presented to an individual who has been active in community education and awareness.

Rita recently founded Clay Capital Development, LLC, specifically to purchase, restore and develop commercial buildings in Uhrichsville.

She received her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Kent State University in 1978 and her Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Kent State University in 1981. Rita has worked for American Greetings Corporation, EK Success Brands, a New Jersey-based division of Wilton Brands, the world’s largest supplier of hobby craft products, and the Director of Marketing for Portal Publications, a leading graphic arts publisher and also the Marketing Manager for Papyrus/Schurman Fine Papers.

On a visit to Uhrichsville during the summer of 2013, Rita realized three historic Uhrichsville Central Business District buildings were empty and for sale. After much discussion, encouragement and support from her parents and her friend Beth Hillyer, she purchased three buildings. She began renovations and restoration immediately. The Pet Cove has opened on Water Street and after a near gut renovation, a full-service restaurant is slated to open by summer 2016 on East Third Street.

Locally, Rita serves on the Uhrichsville Museum of Clay Industry and Folk Art Advisory Board and the Panhandle Passage Committee. Her company, Clay Capital Development is a member of the Twin City Chamber of Commerce. In 2014, she initiated the Uhrichsville Farmer’s Market and donates the space and advertising to support this community service.

She previously served on the Board of Directors for the San Francisco chapter of the American Marketing Association, was a Board member of the US Greeting Card Trade Association and was Chair of the International Awards Competition in 2000. She served as a volunteer literacy tutor with the Alameda County Jail Inmate Education program and a long-time member of the Kent State University Alumni Association (35 years) and American Mensa, Ltd (33 years).

She accepts this award on her parent’s behalf and wants them to have the recognition they richly deserve. Rita and her husband, Eugene ‘Gene’ Kusmiak, reside in midtown Manhattan in New York City. She is the daughter of Wanda Hyder and the late Carl McPeak.

Scott Luikart (C ‘81) has been named the 2016 Alumnus Achievement Award recipient. This is awarded to a person whose contributions have made an impact on society and the community.

Luikart, who passed away on August 29, 2015, was an Advisor at Wells Fargo from 1993 through 2015. He received the Chairman’s Counsel Honor for placing client’s needs first and providing outstanding support and service.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Walsh University in accounting and business finance. Luikart was a member of First Baptist Church. In 2000-2001 he moved his family to the Philippines where they pastored for two churches with many volunteers who supported their efforts.

Luikart’s passion was Ultra-distance cycling. In 2015, Luikart won two world championships in the 24-hour and 500 mile competitions. He participated in the 17-day coast-to-coast event twice. He set the record in the 24-hour event in the National 24-hour competition in Michigan – his record of 511.1 miles (in a 24-hour period) still remains.

Luikart is a former member of the Claymont Foundation and was instrumental in establishing the investment policy and played a major role in the expansion of the scholarships made available to Claymont high school and collegiate students.

He and his wife Jenifer have two sons, Kyle Luikart and Eric (Becca) Luikart. His twin brother Mark (Brenda) Luikart is a previous recipient of this award.

Larry Ford has been selected as the 2016 Teacher of Year Award. The award is given to a teacher in the Claymont School System. This award is based on the quality of teaching, impact on students, commitment to the educational process and the pursuit of lifetime learning and is based on nomination by his/her peers.

Ford worked as a biologist for Park Farms Poultry prior to becoming a teacher in 1995. He is currently a Biology teacher at Claymont High School.

He received his B.S. in Administrative Science at The Ohio State University, his teaching certification from Walsh University and his M.A. of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Ashland University.

Ford is a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Massillon, NEA/OEA and a blood donor with Lifeshare. He has won numerous Outstanding Educator Awards as presented by the top 10% students at Claymont High School.

He has always enjoyed school, whether as a student or as a teacher. His father was an educator. He was also influenced greatly by his 6th grade teacher, Mr. Giar, who was very outgoing, enthusiastic, caring and funny.

Ford is inspired by his wife, who contracted a neuromuscular disorder in 2004, and although she is physically disabled, her spirit for life cannot be contained. He uses her in his teaching to tell students to be upbeat and optimistic and find joy and passion in their life because she lives it every day.

In addition to being a teacher, he is a musician and enjoys playing golf in addition to finding projects to do around the house. Ford and his wife Lann reside in Canton and have two children, Dara and Dustin.

Dear Claymont Foundation,

I would like to express my appreciation for the grant I received this year to use purchasing items for our positive behavior program at CJHS. The students have loved the Claymont gear and prize box that I was able to purchase because of the grant. At this point in the school year, we have reached nearly 1,100 green slips for positive behavior office referrals. As the dean of students who is typically responsible for dealing with poor behavior, because of this program, I have been able to make some very meaningful connections with students who come to my office to turn in their positive office referral slips. Parents have also expressed their appreciation to our building for acknowledging their child’s positive behavior.

This school year, we have followed our building motto “The Mustang Way” that goes along with our positive behavior chart which includes the acronym RAID- Respect, Achievement, Integrity, Determination. When students display any area of RAID, they have the opportunity to be issued a positive office referral/green slip. Administration and teachers in our building have conveyed their excitement in seeing some students make a positive turn around with their poor behavior as well as continuing to watch other students maintain their positive behavior. The majority of the slips that have been issued have been returned to me with a parent signature. To me, this shows that they are excited to show their parents that they have been acknowledged for something good.

Thanks for all that you do for our district!

Sincerely,Michele HenryClaymont Jr. High School Dean of Students

Claymont Alumni Foundation,

I wanted to express my sincere thanks for the $1000 grant you awarded me to fund various small groups, parent and community involvement initiatives, and my counseling needs. I have included some photos of what the funds were used to pur chase. The monies allowed me to purchase bean bag chairs, posters, and bulletin board materials for the room where most of the small groups meet. I was also able to use the room for Coffee With Counselors, a community involvement initiative.

Additionally, I was able to buy a Tokita game (similar to Jenga) which I use with self esteem groups, my 7 Habits class, and even the grief group. The game came with several card stacks that incorporate communication and sharing while playing. The girls group was able to make SOUL Sister mirrors to hang in their lock ers. The girls in 8th grade expressed excitement over being able to take them over to the high school next year. This week, both boys and girls groups will be working with Mr. Trimmer creating key chains and jewelry with the SOUL logo as takeaways from their experience. Monies from your grant award were used to purchase materials they will be using.

Some of the money was used to buy binders and dividers for my Student Success Plan group. We organized their school work. Over half of the boys in this group have seen an increase in their overall GPA.

I can’t thank you enough for believing in me and the ideas I have for our stu dents. I appreciate the grant money, and I appreciate the support I felt as a result of your award.

Sincerely,

Susan Monticelli

THE CLAYMONT FOUNDATION: 20 YEARS OF GROWTH

The Claymont Foundation was created in 1996 to support and enhance the academic programs of the Claymont School system. A group of persons interested in the improvement and quality of our schools formed a tax-exempt not-for-profit Ohio corporation known as The Claymont City Schools Claymont Foundation, Inc. This is a separate entity from the school itself. In 2016, the Foundation is celebrating its 20th year anniversary.

The initial Board of Trustees was composed of Dr. John Romig (President), State Senator Greg DiDonato, Blair Hillyer, Gay LaPorte Cox, (Secretary), Chris Abbuhl (Vice President), Sally Allensworth O’Donnell, Rick Bloom (Treasurer), school administration representative Mike Wright and school board representative Bill Grandison. The current Board of Trustees is comprised of Attorney Shawn Lindsey (President), school administration representative Beth DiDonato (Vice President), Barb Huff Bollon (Secretary), Rob Murry (Financial Secretary), Nic Reynolds (Treasurer), school board representative John Rocchi, school employee representative Alicia Carpenter, Tiffany Martini-Stephens, Jacklyn “Jackie” Triplett, Bob Brick, Cathy Cottis, and Travis Johns. The Foundation was formed by Attorney Jim Carrothers, who continues to serve as it legal representative.

The Foundation is the vehicle by which funds are channeled to the school for academics, teaching programs and physical facilities needed to improve the academic opportunities for the Claymont students. The Foundation Board reviews requests from the schools and teachers, for which school funding is not available, for such things as payment of expenses for innovative educational programs submitted by teachers; equipment needs such as computers, microscopes or other educational aids, or assistance to students to continue to pursue academic awards. The teacher grants range from upper level science needs to basic life skills. As the economic base developed, scholarships were and are now awarded to graduates.

While the number one goal of the Foundation is Academic Excellence in the Claymont schools, it also publishes a regular newsletter to Claymont, Dennison, and Uhrichsville graduates, faculty, staff and area residents to keep them advised of the progress and status of the schools. For those now living outside the area; it, hopefully, provides them with a touch of home.

The Foundation works with alumni classes on reunions. It also sponsors the Alumni Awards Banquet each year and gives awards to returning distinguished graduates. This is to not only recognize the distinguished graduates, but it is to give the current students confidence, pride, and the understanding that they too, with hard work and determination, can become successful in their field of endeavor.

It is an ongoing battle for the Foundation to stay current with the names and addresses of the Dennison, Uhrichsville, and Claymont alumni. It is requested that the alumni go to the Claymont Schools web-site and provide the Foundation with this information.

The Claymont Foundation now awards financial scholarships to Claymont High School seniors who will continue or Claymont High School graduates who are continuing their education by attending a technical school, trade school, community college, or university. The scholarship’s funds are donated by a variety of interested persons or groups.

In addition to the traditionally awarded Claymont Foundation Scholarships, the Claymont Foundation, Inc. has received a bequest from the Estate of Lois J. Sproul to establish scholarships for needy children who are graduating or have graduated from Claymont High School and who are attending (or about to attend) a college or university. The scholarships are known as the Paul R. and Lois J. Sproul Scholarships.

Over the years, the Foundation has awarded approximately $172,000.00 for teacher grants and $432,500.00 for scholarships. In 2016, the Foundation will award $83,500.00 in scholarships.

All donations are welcome for this worthwhile cause. Please send your tax deductible donations to the Claymont Foundation, Inc., PO Box 222, Uhrichsville, OH 44683. You may also contact the Foundation, if you wish to establish a scholarship, or for other information or inquiries, at claymontschools.org and click on alumni or by email at [email protected].
