The Science of Happily Ever After will explore what scientists have discovered are the best bets and pitfalls of choosing a partner and maintaining a happy and healthy romantic partnership. Through personal reflection and application, the course will emphasize how students can use research-based information to form strong and lasting relationships.

learned from the reading? Why are they important for you, personally? What misconceptions did you have that were corrected by the reading material?

Debriefing Videos (5%) At the end of each week, students will make a brief (2-4 minute) video responding to the readings, assignments, and activities for the week and share it with their classmates.

Provocative Question Discussions (15%) Each week I will pose a question to the class that people may have different opinions about. Students will discuss the question online.

Roadmap for Mate Selection Assignment (20%)

In this assignment, students will outline their 3 wishes for a romantic partner and explain why those characteristics are most important for them personally. Using self-reflection about their own background and current needs, students will decide what type of partner is most likely to be a good fit for them.

Dear Abby Assignment (20%)

For this assignment, students will use information from the 7 Principles to respond to questions I have posed in “Dear Abby” format. Students will use their understanding of healthy relationship maintenance to give research –based advice to hypothetical individuals/couples.

Topics Week 1: Sliding Vs Deciding – making good choices in relationships

• Why is deliberation important? • What role does being single play in deliberation? • Should I cohabit – an example of why deliberation matters

Week 2: How to avoid wrong partner

• Understanding the role of evolution in mate selection • What are the 3 wishes – why do I only get 3?

Week 3: How to choose a better partner

• Considering what is important • Thinking about personality • Understanding family background

Week 4: Keeping your relationship healthy over time

• Understanding the importance of positive communication • Emphasizing little moments of connection • The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse
