Ofcial Newsletter of the NSPCA Summer 2016
Message from the
President
By: Travis Lucas
Greetings Nebraska Pest Control-lers! I hope that the Summer into Falltransition has you so busy that youhardly have time to read this newslet-
ter. Well, not entirely, but nonetheless I will keep itbrief. This time of year I like to think of our business asa squirrel hoarding nuts before Winter, getting whilethe getting is good, and not knowing how long Wintermight keep him holed up. August through October canbe some of our busiest months, in part, because of one-time or annual customers experiencing unusually highseasonal pest problems. Wasps, boxelder bugs, mice, spiders, and other pests can vary from year to year intheir pressure, and customer telephone calls will tellyou which it is before you even step outside. Some ofthose new customers can offer recurring serviceopportunities on a monthly or quarterly business, andthat may have you digging less into your Winter stashin the coming cold months.
One of the dominant news stories throughout theSummer was, and is, the Zika Virus. The world hasbeen watching as the disease’s territory and impactspreads throughout North and South America andelsewhere. In Puerto Rico, for example, if currenttrends continue, at least 1 in 4 people, including womenwho become pregnant, may become infected withZika. While Zika is not, at present, a concern for usstructural applicators here in Nebraska, events like thisoften highlight the importance of pest managementacross many levels, and the impact that our industry hason people’s safety and well being. To elaborate on this,I found some statistics to share which I found on theNPMA’s website.
Stinging Insects Stinging insects send more than half a million
people to the emergency room every year. More than two million Americans are allergic to
stinging insects. At least 50 people a year die each year as a result of
insect stings.
Cockroaches Cockroaches are known to spread 33 kinds of
bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella species, six types of parasitic worms and seven kinds ofhuman pathogens.
The saliva, droppings and decomposing bodies ofcockroaches contain allergen proteins known totrigger allergy and asthma symptoms, especially inchildren.
Up to 60% of people with asthma who live in citiesare allergic to cockroaches.
Cockroach suppression and eradication is vital tohealthcare facilities, homes and sites where food isprepared or served.
Termites Termites alone cause over $5 billion in property
damage annually, a cost not covered by homeown-ers insurance.
Subterranean termites eat 24/7, making them themost destructive species of termite found in the U.S.
Bed Bugs Bed bug bites can leave behind itchy, red welts, and
can increase one s risk for a secondary infection as a’result of scratching.

PPMA Calls for Industry
Participation in Annual
Rodent Awareness Week
In anticipation of rodentseason, the Professional PestM a n a g e m e n t A l l i a n c e
(PPMA), which serves as thepublic outreach arm of the NationalPest Management Association(NPMA), is working to educate thepublic about the diseases anddangers associated with rats andmice during Rodent AwarenessWeek, October 23-29, 2016.Rodent Awareness Week is anannual designation recognized byChase’s Calendar of Events and iscelebrated by companies through-out the pest management industry.Using various media relations andsocial media tactics, PPMA’s goalis to encourage public vigilance toprotect against the health threatsposed by rodents and to promote theimportance of working with alicensed pest professional in theevent of an infestation.
“Although rodents are a year-round problem, we do find thatconsumers report an uptick inrodent infestations occurring in thefall and winter months. In fact, rodents invade about 21 millionhomes in the U.S. each winter, making them one of the mostcommon pests ,” said CindyMannes, executive director ofPPMA. “Pest control companieshave the knowledge, first handexperience and tools needed toeducate consumers on the damagerodents cause, the importance ofbeing proactive against thisdestructive pest, and the diseasesthey can carry. So, let’s get out thereand spread the word! Join us duringrodent awareness week to get theconversation going about rodentsand why they need to be controlled
with the help of professional pestcontrol services.”
PPMA is leading the way withthe launch of a consumer mediarelations campaign and a weeklongsocial media effort across all@PestWorld properties designed tohelp educate the public aboutrodent facts and the risks associatedwith infestations. Industry mem-bers are encouraged to rally behindthe cause by devoting their socialmedia pages to the topic, sharingrodent facts and info and using thehashtag #RodentAwareness in allinteractions.
PPMA has also developed anexclusive toolkit for Mainframesubscribers to utilize as a resourcefor their publicity efforts. Thetoolkit, which became available ford o w n l o a d o n P P M A M a i n -frame.org in August, contains acustomizable press release, sug-gested social media content, highresolution photography, mediatraining documents and othermaterials to help companiescommunicate to their customerbase, while gaining positivepublicity for their business in thecommunities they serve.
