H119. Deluxe Turned Wood Holder. This beautiful wooden holder has several inlaid
bands, including a wide band of either horn- or amber-colored resin (inlay colors vary). The holder is 7 inches in length, with a graceful tapered design. Choose: Horn or Amber. $49.95. Introductory price $39.95
H120. Wooden Oblique Holder with Adjustable Screw. This new holder works

imitation ivory. With an approximate diameter of 0.6 inches, this holder is thicker than most turned wood holders. The length is about 7.75 inches, with a Zanerian style tail. $40.00. JNB $32.00

New Gillott 303The Gillott 303 nib has recently been retooled and the new version has received excellent reviews: better writing quality and much better quality control.
N72. Gillott 303. One
of the most popular nibs for copperplate is now much improved. Good flexibility - not too stiff, not too flexible. Very thin hairlines and good swells. Works for scripts 3/16-1/16". Sharp point, but will work on slightly textured surfaces. Tends to catch on upstrokes. The nib has been retooled to improve reliability and writing quality and has received excellent reviews. $1.19. SALE $.72 10/$6.40 144/$70.56
Zebra G-PensN158. Zebra G Hard Nib.
Treated with a special boron
coating, these pointed nibs are made to be more durable than typical G nibs, perhaps writing twice as long before they need to be replaced. They are also stiffer than the regular Zebra G nibs and require a fair amount more pressure for shaded (swelled) strokes. $3.50 each 10/$3.00 each
N118. Zebra G Nib. $2.00 each
N118-10PK. Pack of 10 nibs. $18.50
N153. Zebra G Titanium Nib. This nib is an upgrade
from the Zebra G (steel) nib (N118), which is made of chrome-plated steel. The titanium version is said to have four times the endurance of the steel version. $4.50 each 5/$4.25ea 10/$3.90ea
N75. Gillott 659. This tiny crowquill nib is good for
x-heights around 1/16". It is more sturdy than other small nibs and less flexible. Can be used
to write on somewhat textured paper. Is smaller and less flexible than the Hunt 108, another crowquill. Because of its tubular shaft, the Gillott 659 requires a special holder, Gillott Holder #51 (H75). $1.29 each. SALE $.99 each 10/$.95 each 36/$.50 each, 144/$.40 each
N152. Hunt 107. This is the finest of the Hunt crowquills, best
suited for long, even lines and cross-hatching. $1.39ea.
Vintage NibsN78-V. Vintage Hunt 103 Nib. This small, flexible,
and somewhat delicate nib needs an extremely light and sensitive touch. The nib is resilient on down strokes, springing back into shape if moderate pressure is used. The Hunt 103 has a similar feel to the Hunt 100 nib, though the Hunt 103 is larger, more flexible, and less fragile than the Hunt 100. It is recommended for use on smooth papers (it has a tendency to catch on more textured papers). Suitable for writing at x-heights of 1/8" or less. Limited stock on these vintage nibs. $2.00 each 10/$1.80 each
N94. Esterbrook 354. A small, flexible sharp point for very
small writing. More flexible and delicate than the Esterbrook 355. $.95 each

This fountain pen is also great for pen-and-ink sketching. Note: Only non-waterproof inks that are made for fountain pens should be used with this fountain pen. Be wary of pigmented inks for fountain pens.

The wide nib needs a good flow to keep up with the strokes as they are made, which means a lot of ink, but not so much flow that the ink floods out. Fortunately, with this pen, the Luthis people got the balance of ink flow just right. This is the widest broad edge pen I’ve seen! – Carol DuBosch

BRUSHES
BR54. Loew-Cornell Brush 7100. Chisel edge bristles (golden taklon synthetic). Short
handle. For use with watercolor or acrylics. John Stevens recommends this one-stroke brush as a good substitute for the Rekab sable brush (chisel-edged, round ferrule) that he uses for brush lettering. This one has longer fibers like the Rekab, but has a flat ferrule. Two sizes: ½". $10.99 1". $20.99 (The Loew-Cornell Brush looks like a Winsor & Newton 995 brush, but with much longer bristles.)
S950. Topolino Magnetic Stirrer. If you address envelopes with metallic ink, this
little machine is for you. All metallic inks have a
settling problem. When you first start working, it takes a lot of shaking to get the metallic color evenly mixed in the ink. While you are working, you have to regularly stir the bottle to keep the pigment evenly dispersed. This ingenious device provides a fine solution. You place a Teflon-coated magnetic pellet in a wide-mouthed jar, pour in your metallic ink, and set the jar on the platform of the magnetic stirrer. Turn the dial on the magnetic stirrer, and, as if by magic, your ink is stirred! Leave your ink in the wide-mouth jar with the Teflon-coated pellet, and next time the machine will quickly and effortlessly stir your ink for you. No batteries; the stirrer plugs in. Because of its flat design, you are not limited to one jar size. Includes one magnetic stir bar. $79.25 S951. Stirring Bars. Pack of 5. Coated with a Teflon-like material. $12.50

JOHN STEVENS
Calligraphy, Letter Art, Design
A profusely illustrated, full-color retrospective of John
Stevens’ work with letterforms. Includes calligraphy and
lettering – artworks, personal work, experimental work,
commissioned work – as well as graphic work and type
design. His body of work spans paper to stone, books to walls, hand-lettering to type and the
digital realm. In the text, John presents his approach to a design or work and his
thoughts on letterforms, and continues with a discussion on tools, teaching,
design, and writing in general. Using his body of work as example, he makes the case that barriers between fine arts and
graphic arts are mostly irrelevant.

NEW ARRIVALS: BOOKSCALLIGRAPHY
B4130. ABC for Adults by Christopher Haanes. 2014. 65pp. 5.5"x7-5/8". Paper $30.00
In this beautiful little book, each of
our 26 letters gets a 2-page spread. On the left page are large Roman and Italic forms, majuscule and minuscule, formal and ruling-pen-written.
Below those is the letter written in five scripts, from Uncial to Copperplate. On the right page is Christopher’s musing on the letter, sometimes with an adult theme (hence the title), followed by a history of the letter from its Phoenician roots. Included in the back is a timeline, a diagram showing the terms for letter parts, and a bibliography. Each copy is signed, in pencil, on the title page. Very limited quantity available.
B4151. Art in the Alphabet: A History of the Evolution of Hand Lettering by Lewis F. Day. 2016. 228pp. 5"x8". Paper $19.95
This grand compi- lation, originally
published in 1910 as Alphabets Old and New, presents more than 250 alphabets, from classical Roman capitals to modern (in 1910) forms. Among the selection of modern alphabets
are samples that offer evidence of how the surface – wood, stone, leather, mosaic – and the writing instrument – chisel, needle, brush, stylus, pen – can affect the character of the lettering. An introductory essay traces the evolution of the Latin alphabet.
B4146. Calligraphy: A Compre-hensive Guide to Beautiful Lettering by Jane Sullivan. 2016. 120pp. 8.25"x11". Hardcover $19.99
Introduces nine major calligraphic styles, with
detailed diagrams and tips for writing each letter. Sub-sections include histories of each alphabet,
step-by-step tutorials for embellishing your calligraphy, and ways to showcase your elegant lettering. Full color photographs and illustrations throughout.
B4126. Calligraphy for Everyone, 3rd edition. by Leonid Pronenko. 2016. 320pp. 7.6"x11.4". Hardcover $25.79. This book is due December 2016. Preorder your copy now. Your credit card won’t be charged until the book ships. PayPal orders are charged at time of order; for delayed payment with PayPal, email your order.
I have a copy of the second edition of this book (2011), and it is a joy to behold. While I
don’t read Russian, the hundreds of reproductions of calligraphy, lettering, and calligraphic art – mostly from the last 25 years of the twentieth century – are enough. There are examples from everyone from Alice to Zapf (along with some little-seen works from Russian scribes), filling the vast majority of the 300-plus pages of calligraphic eye candy. It is a picture book – lavishly illustrated is certainly an apt description. The printing is superb, full color throughout, on creamy, uncoated stock. It looks and feels like a book that would cost two or three times a much. I don’t think you will be disappointed. The text is in Russian, so I can’t tell you much about it. A brief history of calligraphy is followed by a section on calligraphic types. The last chapter seems to be about correspondence and has examples of letters to Pronenko, mostly in English, from Martin Jackson, Albert Kapr, Hermann Zapf, Kargeorg Hoefer, Sidney Day, GSE Briem, Tim Girvin, Serrit Noordij, Rick Cusik, among others (there are also some greeting cards in this section).
B4128. Alice: A Survey of the Calligraphy of Alice by Jerry Kelly. 2016. 8"x11.5". Hardcover $60.00. This book is

Alice Koeth, known professionally simply as Alice, is one of the most respected calligra-
phers in the world today, though relatively few of her works have been published in book form. The vast majority of her graphic output remains unseen and uncollected. This book, compiled, with Alice’s active participation, has over 140 illustrations, showing the depth and breadth of her artistry. Jerry’s introduction and Donald Jackson’s eloquent appreciation set her work in context. Most works are illustrated in color, many are presented full-page. Over a career spanning more than 60 years, Alice’s artistry exemplifies taste, technique, wit, and her own
unique graphic style. A keen understanding of craft, respect for tools, and interest in historical forms have contributed to her command of various calligraphic styles, written with extraordinary skill. Best known are her masterful posters for The Morgan Library from the 60s & 70s, which have been graciously photographed by the Morgan for this book. More of her graphic work was created for a wide assortment of clients – commercial enterprises, publishers, universities, organizations, and individuals.

B4141. Classic Book Jackets: The Design Legacy of George Salter by Thomas Hansen. 2004. 200pp. 8.2"x9.8". Paper $35.00. SALE $24.50
For more than forty years, George Salter’s
beautifully drawn and lettered covers served as elegant
windows onto the works of authors as Albert Camus, John Dos Passos, Jack London, and Thomas Mann. B4122. Palatino: The Natural History of a Typeface by Robert Bringhurst. 2016. 296pp. 5.6"x9". Hardcover $65.00
Bringhurst takes Palatino, likely the most
widely known of Hermann Zapf faces, and traces its development as it transforms from hot metal, through film setting, and into the
digital world. Included with the text are over 200 color illustrations. The book covers Palatino and its extended family, from Linotype to Palatino Sans and beyond. The book is a convincing argument that artists who create letters can, and should, be judged by the same standards and held in the same esteem as musicians and painters. B4101. Schreiben mit Hand und Herz: Kalligrafische Erfahrungen (Writing with Hand & Heart: Calligraphic Experiences). 2016. 144pp. 8.25"x11.7". $49.00
In books and seminars, Gottfried
Pott has taught the art of calligraphy for 30 years. In this new and very personal book, Pott describes his calligraphic
experience. Covering many years, he takes you on a journey into his creative process, discussing individual works. With the keyboard as the main means for transmitting text, one can approach the text in an individual and authentic way. And freed from the task of informing, the scribe concentrates on interpreting the text. This writing by hand intensifies the confrontation with the words. Thought becomes visible action. Attention is given to the moment. The letter refuses to always fit to a narrow purpose. The text becomes image.Unlike, his earlier books, the relationship between text and calligraphic artwork in this book is very intensive. The text, illustrations, and the book’s design create an integrated whole. It is a passionate statement, visual and verbal, for the power of writing by hand. German text. 100 calligraphic works are shown.

B4103. Signs of Italy: Outdoor Lettering Up and Down the Boot by James Clough. 2015. 248pp, 12"x8.5". Hardcover $75.00
Before typefaces and fonts dominated the scene, there were no printed manuals for
signwriters and no standardization of letterforms for commercial signs in Italy. This detachment from standard models and the craftsmanship and creativity of the signmakers and designers are what make Italian signs so extraordinary, and provide such a variety of original letterforms. Whimsical, intuitive, humorous, improvised, elegant: Italian signs are a mirror of Italian society. From the ornate Tuscan style of the 19th century to the eccentric letters of Art Nouveau, from grandiose architectural lettering of the 1930s to the exquisite surviving examples of the old signwriters, from fascist ghost signs to lettering on manhole covers, the book takes you on a fascinating lettering tour of Italy. Over 300 full-color photos.
