1 UW-Extension Ashland County 4-H Program Summer 2016 Dear 4-H Families, We hope this newsleer finds you and your families in good health. The summer storms have really impacted our community and our extended 4-H family. Damage in the Marengo area and south, massive flooding in the Bad River Community, and wind damage in pockets throughout the region. It is always grafying to see how our extended community and the 4-H community pull together and help each other out in the face of chal- lenge and uncertainty. This is the blessing of community. Some excellent educaonal trips and programming has taken place between bouts of weather. The 4-H Western Spirit Trip, which I was a part of, took a bus load of high school 4-H’ers west to eight naon- al parks and monuments to learn about the Naonal Parks during their centennial, to learn outdoor leadership skills, and to network with other 4-H teens (as well as par- cipate in a service project). Camp followed hot on the heels of that program (3 of our volunteer camp counselors parcipated in the West- ern Spirit trip) and was perhaps the best one we’ve had. Your children were a delight and the counselors were excellent (in good weather and bad). We were blessed with a couple of excellent adult volunteers as well, who are crucial to camp success. Ash- land County 4-H sent FIVE youth on the Cizenship Washington Focus pro- gram – a record. We will look forward to hearing more about what they learned at the Achievement program in November, but by all accounts it was a learning packed week. The Ri- flery series David Nortunen and Paul Van Horn ran was well aended and well run. Archery is about halfway through their series and I hear from a number of parents and kids that it is impacng the youth parcipang in untold posive ways (thanks Mitch and Amy). The Elementary Adventure Days programs have been well aend- ed and we got some great press as well. Thanks to the volunteers and 4- H Ambassadors who are making those programs a success (one to go in Au- gust). The Strategic Resource Interac- on 4-H Club at Bad River has been meeng weekly for acvies since spring, and will soon add program- ming around animals. That doesn’t even begin to cover all that has hap- pened this summer, but represent a few highlights. Most of our clubs are in full sum- mer swing. Clubs like our Market Sale Club are busy preparing for the Ashland County Fair on Labor Day Weekend. Now is the me to finish up work on projects and get them ready for display. Exhibing at the Fair gives children and youth an opportunity to present their work publically and get feedback through the Fair judges. Labor Day should prove to be an excing week- end! We sll need addional volun- teer help for our 4-H Dairy Bar at the Fair. Contact Jennifer Nortunen or our office if you can provide ad- dional help at our major fundrais- er for the year. If any of our mem- bers or clubs need project or club acvity support, feel free to call our office. UW-Extension Ashland County 4-H Program Summer 2016

Dear 4-H Families,

We hope this newsletter finds you and your families in good health. The summer storms have really impacted our community and our extended 4-H family. Damage in the Marengo area and south, massive flooding in the Bad River Community, and wind damage in pockets throughout the region. It is always gratifying to see how our extended community and the 4-H community pull together and help each other out in the face of chal-lenge and uncertainty. This is the blessing of community.

Some excellent educational trips and programming has taken place between bouts of weather. The 4-H Western Spirit Trip, which I was a part of, took a bus load of high school 4-H’ers west to eight nation-al parks and monuments to learn about the National Parks during their centennial, to learn outdoor leadership skills, and to network with other 4-H teens (as well as par-ticipate in a service project). Camp followed hot on the heels of that program (3 of our volunteer camp counselors participated in the West-ern Spirit trip) and was perhaps the

best one we’ve had. Your children were a delight and the counselors were excellent (in good weather and bad). We were blessed with a couple of excellent adult volunteers as well, who are crucial to camp success. Ash-land County 4-H sent FIVE youth on the Citizenship Washington Focus pro-gram – a record. We will look forward to hearing more about what they learned at the Achievement program in November, but by all accounts it was a learning packed week. The Ri-flery series David Nortunen and Paul Van Horn ran was well attended and well run. Archery is about halfway through their series and I hear from a number of parents and kids that it is impacting the youth participating in untold positive ways (thanks Mitch and Amy). The Elementary Adventure Days programs have been well attend-ed and we got some great press as well. Thanks to the volunteers and 4-H Ambassadors who are making those programs a success (one to go in Au-gust). The Strategic Resource Interac-tion 4-H Club at Bad River has been meeting weekly for activities since spring, and will soon add program-ming around animals. That doesn’t even begin to cover all that has hap-pened this summer, but represent a few highlights.

Most of our clubs are in full sum-mer swing. Clubs like our Market Sale Club are busy preparing for the Ashland County Fair on Labor Day Weekend. Now is the time to finish up work on projects and get them ready for display. Exhibiting at the Fair gives children and youth an opportunity to present their work publically and get feedback through the Fair judges. Labor Day should prove to be an exciting week-end! We still need additional volun-teer help for our 4-H Dairy Bar at the Fair. Contact Jennifer Nortunen or our office if you can provide ad-ditional help at our major fundrais-er for the year. If any of our mem-bers or clubs need project or club activity support, feel free to call our office.

Look for information inside this newsletter on the Fair, record book deadlines (Oct 3), new 4-H T-shirt ordering information (by Aug 17), and upcoming events. Take time out of projects, gardens, and clean-ing up trees and debris to enjoy the sunset.

Be well!

4-H Spring Shooting Sports

In June, we completed a four session

Shooting Sports series for kids be-

tween the ages of 10 - 16. We learned

about gun safety and all kids got to

shoot air rifles at targets. The older

kid also got to shoot .22 rifles and

shotguns. Our favorite part was

shooting clay pigeons. Thanks to our

instructors David Nortunen, Paul Van

Horn, Doug Liphart, & Dr. Mark Sneed

(guest for shotgun unit).

Citizen Washington Focus Trip

My name is Mia Nortunen and I feel fortunate that I was selected by the Ashland County PLO to go on the Citizen Washington Focus (CWF) trip this summer. The event was held from July 16th - July 24th. Some of my favorite sights were the United States Capital, Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Mount Vernon, and Gettysburg. It was a trip of a lifetime! I would recommend it to any-one who wants to learn more about our federal government and to meet new 4-H friends from around the state and country.

DAIRY BAR The Clover Connection

2016 ‘Draft’ 4-H Dairy Bar Schedule

We need your help at the Ashland County Fair with the 4-H Dairy Bar! This is your chance to

give back to the parent organization that takes care of Ashland County 4-H, lends financial

help, and supports the clubs in so many ways. We tried to break the time into shifts but we still

need volunteers - selling local ice cream on hot days at the fair is both easy and fun. It also

builds life skills and visibility for 4-H Clubs. The Ashland County 4-H Leader’s Association rais-

es 80% of their operating budget from this event, and heavily supports 4-H CANSKI, our 4-H

youth members, and our more traditional 4-H Clubs. Let me know when you can help during

the fair by email or calling my office 715-682-7017. - Doug

Senior 4-H Scholarship Winners

Two seniors were chosen this year to receive $500 scholarships for post-secondary education. The Ashland County 4-H Leader’s Association grant competitive scholarhip(s) to graduating 4-H members who meet the qualifications and submit an application and references. Scholarships are presented at the high school Senior Honors Night Program at their respective high schools. Matt Kubik, senior at Washburn High School, has been active in 4-H CANSKI, 4-H Outdoor Adventure Leadership and the 4-H Am-bassadors for 7 years, and a club officer. Matt also volunteered for many community and 4-H functions, including coaching youth soccer, and was a drummer in the high school jazz band and a three sport athlete. He will attend University of Minnesota-Duluth and study aerospace engineering. Colin Liphart, senior at Washburn High School first enrolled in 4-H as a third grader. He was an officer in 4-H CANSKI and 4-H Out-door Adventure Leadership, served as a 4-H Ambassador and a 4-H Camp Counselor, and volunteered over 100 hours per year throughout his high school years as an Ashland County Teen Court Panel Member and in both 4-H and community capaci-ties. Colin represented Ashland County as a youth delegate to two Superior Days Legislative Forums and as a 4-H International participant in Finland (summer 2015). He will attend Carleton College in Minnesota. Both Matt and Colin were members of the 4-H CANSKI 2014 High School State Championship Cross Country Ski Team, and Colin also represented 4-H CANSKI as a part of the Midwest team at U.S. Jr Nationals in Stowe, Vermont (2014). Reports

The Beavers are Busy In June, the Brunswillow Busy Beavers were very busy with many events. The first one was when we went to Supreme Selections to su-premely select some flowers to plant in planters at the White River and Marengo town halls. The flowers selected were portulaca, geranium, and marigold. The reason we do this each spring is to add some color to the drab town hall buildings! On the 28th of June, the Busy Beavers gathered at the Nortunen house-hold to craft some paper veggies for the fair booth in September, which

seems months away, but the Bea-vers are prepared! The veggies in-cluded pumpkins, carrots, onions, and radishes. Our theme for this year's fair booth is "Plant your feet in 4-H and watch yourself grow." Be sure to check out our booth at the fair!! Louis Fischbach Reporter for the BBB
