The Toledo Museum of Art offers art classes for all ages and levels of experience, in a wide variety of media to satisfy your interests.

All classes and workshops are related to works of art in the TMA collection. Students will visit the galleries, learn about some of the iconic works of art, then combine that inspiration with their own creativity back in the studio.

Looking for a creative outlet for the kids? You’ll find it here. Through engaging projects with knowledgeable instructors, children and teens learn to understand art and some of the many ways to create it.

Want to try something new? You’ll find it here. Sample different materials, learn basic techniques, and enjoy unleashing your creativity. Immerse yourself in the process or share the experience with friends.

Toledo Museum of Art

Withdrawal Policy Students withdrawing from a class should notify the registrar in writing at least one week prior to the start of class. Withdrawals may be submitted by completing and returning a withdrawal form via email or regular mail. Students will receive credit to attend another class of similar value but it must be used no later than the following semester. There will be no withdrawals or transfers permitted after the start of the first class. Refunds will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Member Discounts Members of the Toledo Museum of Art receive a discount on all classes, as well as free parking (a $7-per-visit value). A membership is a great way to support your Museum and, in many cases, it pays for itself!

Class Changes/Cancellation The Museum reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes to adjust for enrollment or unforeseen circumstances. Occasionally, class start dates and times change from those listed or classes are combined to meet minimum enrollment numbers. If it is necessary to cancel a class for any reason, registered participants will be informed as soon as possible and extended the opportunity to transfer to another class or receive a full refund.

Teen Work-Study Program Teens ages 14–18 have the opportunity to serve as classroom assistants for children’s classes. In exchange for their semester-long commitment, they will receive one teen art class free of charge that same semester. Summer applications should be submitted by May 20, 2018. ScholarshipsThe Museum has a number of scholarship opportunities available for youth and adult students. Scholarships, awarded based on financial need, cover 100% of tuition fees for most classes. Students submitting a scholarship application form cannot register for class in advance. Only one scholarship form may be submitted per class, but multiple forms may be submitted for multiple classes. Scholarships are competitive and the volume of submissions is high; unfortunately applying does not guarantee automatic approval. TeenSummerCampThese week-long camps will give participants a crash course in the fundamentals of 2D and 3D media. The intensive workshops provide a great introduction and foundation for teen artists who wish to work in these exciting mediums.

Digital Photography (Ages 14–18)In this introductory class, students will learn the basics of using a digital camera, including composition and practicing ways to creatively enhance images. Original compositions will be created using the Museum's galleries and buildings as part of the setting. Cameras are provided in class.

Art and Robotics (Ages 14–18)In collaboration with Bowling Green State University, join us for an opportunity to create interactive electronic art at TMA. Students will learn how to program microcontrollers through hands-on lab exercises creating simple machines with embodied behaviors. The skills and concepts taught in this course will be presented using an interdisciplinary approach which merges practices in arts and technology. Students will spend Monday through Thursday at TMA then take a field trip to the BGSU campus on Friday for a tour of the robotics lab, transportation provided. Students will have a break for lunch but must bring their own food and drinks.

Glass

Hot GlassTraditional tools such as blowpipes and rods are used to gather, blow, and sculpt molten glass taken directly from the furnace.

Flameworking A gas torch is used to melt rods and tubes of clear and colored glass. The molten glass is then formed and shaped with a variety of precise tools and hand movements.

Warm Glass Kilns heat and soften glass, which is then manipulated with various techniques to fuse flat layers or create molded forms via slumping or casting methods.

Explore one of the most popular and versatile artistic mediums available. Class sizes are small, so register early. Basic supplies are provided. Students in advanced classes may choose to bring specialized tools and colors for specific applications. All classes explore techniques found in TMA's glass collection.

Learn the exciting and ancient art of glassblowing. In this class you will explore TMA’s world-class glass collection for insights and inspiration. Students will be introduced to the basic mechanics of glassblowing and will begin a simple system for making forms and using color. No experience necessary but please note this class can be physically strenuous. No class May 28.

This class builds on the skills developed in the beginning class. Examination of the glass collection will give students insight into various forms they can emulate. This class is a continuation of the system learned in the first two courses. Examination of the glass collection will give students insights into various forms and techniques that they can emulate in the hot shop. Attention will be focused on perfecting the basic skills required to blow glass without instruction. No class July 4.

This class is an introduction to working soft glass at the torch. Utilizing the collection for inspiration, students will learn the fundamentals for creating various solid and sculpted forms. No experience necessary. No class May 28.

Borosilicate at the Torch Eamon King

Students in this class will learn the foundations of working with Borosilicate glass at the torch. Through visits to the galleries and discussion of safety in the studio, students will explore techniques to create solid shapes such as marbles, pendants, and small figurines. No experience necessary.

SESSION 2Borosilicate Flowers Eamon King

Inspired by Community, Rebecca Louise Law’s floral installation, students in this class will work with Borosilicate glass rods and tubing to create flower forms. Students will practice creating stems, stamens, and petals at the torch to form simple and complex flowers. All skill levels welcome.

Learn the history of stained glass while visiting the Glass Pavilion galleries for inspiration. Students will design their own enameled work using the classic copper foil method of stained glass. All skill levels welcome. No class May 27.

SESSION 2Blooming Botanicals in Glass Mary Lane

Inspired by Rebecca Louise Law’s floral installation, Community, students in this class will be introduced to the “pot melt” technique to create flowing, flowering designs in fused glass. Students will focus on different cutting and cold working techniques to create colorful, unique, finished glass works. No experience necessary. No class July 4.

Glass from the PastEamon King

Using TMA’s ancient glass collection for inspiration, students in this class will explore techniques used in ancient glass making and how they can still be applied today. From core-formed vases with ancient feathering techniques to small bowl forms using murrini, create your own glass work inspired by the past! No experience necessary.

Hollow Beads in Soft GlassHeather Hughes-Meek

Students in this two-day workshop will be introduced to forming hollow-core beads in soft glass. Gathering inspiration from the glass collection, students will practice techniques to create large, hollow-core beads on the mandrel. Additional tricks will be explored, such as filling the bead with miniature objects.
