Literacy Content Area Literacy Cohort: Middle and High School Teachers

This session engages middle and high school content area teachers in a research-based professional learning model and instructional framework to improve student literacy and learning. With a focus on discipline-based ways of thinking, reading, and writing, the approach enhances how subject area teachers make the most of their own subject knowledge, tools, and curriculum, supporting even inexperienced student readers and writers. This approach truly enhances students’ content knowledge by making it more accessible for students and supporting deeper understanding of core subject area concepts. Participants will utilize their content area curriculum and instructional materials during this experience. To find full session descriptions, dates, and logistical information, click HERE. Please review each option and date carefully, as educators can participate in multiple opportunities. Registration for all sessions throughout the summer is located HERE. • Participants MUST register as a member of a school team. It is strongly encouraged that at least one teacher of science or engineering attend. • Participants attending the three days of summer coursework are ALSO required to attend two follow up days of continued systemic professional development during SY 19/20. Specific dates for follow up are pending, but will occur during the school day. • Schools must allow to release teachers for two follow up professional learning days. • Pending approval, AUs and CPDs will be awarded for successful completion of summer coursework.

Foundational Track: Eureka Math K-5 Fluency/K-5 Preparation and Customization

Day 1 will prepare new users to explore cornerstone instructional tools, including Sprints, skip counting and other counting exercises, make ten addition and take from ten subtraction problem-solving strategies, and Whiteboard Exchanges (WBEs). Participants experience each tool from a student’s point of view, spend time analyzing the tool’s design, practice using the tool, and experiment with crafting their own problem sequences. The session includes professional reading and plenty of discussion that invites participants to reflect on how best to leverage the power of these tools to increase students’ fluency. Day 2 is threefold: to empower teachers to discern the decisions inherent in each Eureka Math lesson, to study the curriculum’s teaching sequences, and to prepare teachers to customize lessons to meet the needs of their students. Required Materials: For afternoon practice, participants must bring the module from which they are currently teaching or from which they will teach next.

K-2 Sustaining Track: Eureka Math Major Work of the Grade/Solving Word Problems

Day 1 of this session develops participants’ understanding of fundamental mathematics. The session showcases the coherence of addition and subtraction as participants explore the development of those operations across the K–2 grade band. Participants are invited to study Problem Sets, analyze teaching sequences, deliver lesson segments, practice fluency activities, and model with mathematics. Day 2 improves participants’ ability to effectively model and teach addition and subtraction word problems by using math drawings and the tape diagram. Throughout the day, the facilitator models different modes of instructional delivery that engage participants in problem-solving experiences with a variety of word problem types. These activities encourage reflective discussion about the intersection of content and pedagogy.

3-5 Sustaining Track: Eureka Math Major Work of the Grade/Solving Word Problems

Day 1 will develop participants’ understanding of fundamental mathematics. The session showcases the coherence of multiplication and division as participants explore the development of those operations across the 3–5 grade band. Participants are invited to study Problem Sets, analyze teaching sequences, deliver lesson segments, practice fluency activities, and model with mathematics. The use of tape diagrams, place value charts, arrays, area models, and unit language supports participants in making connections between content areas, as they multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Day 2 improves participants’ ability to effectively model and teach multiplication and division word problems by using the tape diagram. Throughout the day, the facilitator models different modes of instructional delivery that engage participants in authentic problem-solving experiences with a variety of word problem types. These activities encourage reflective discussion about the intersection of content and pedagogy.

6-8 Sustaining Track: Eureka Math Major Work of the Grade/Solving Word Problems

Day 1 develops participants’ understanding of the instructional sequence that builds up to the introduction of functions in Grade 8. The session traces the trajectory of content from ratios to properties of similar triangles. Further, the session shows the progression of those concepts, highlighting where they intersect and providing participants with a deep understanding of why the slope of a line is well-defined. Participants are invited to study Classwork, analyze Problem Sets, deliver lesson segments, and model with mathematics. They synthesize their learning from the first half of the day by developing an argument that the slope of a nonvertical line can be determined by using any two distinct points along the line. Day 2 will improve participants’ ability to effectively model and teach the tape diagram as a tool for supporting algebraic fluency with expressions and equations. Throughout the day, the facilitator demonstrates different modes of instructional delivery that engage participants in authentic problem-solving experiences. These activities encourage reflective discussion about the intersection between content and pedagogy.

High School: Eureka Math Preparation and Customization/Solving Word Problems

Day 1 is designed to empower teachers to discern the decisions inherent in each Eureka Math lesson, to study the curriculum’s teaching sequences, and to guide teachers in customizing lessons to meet the needs of their students. The day begins as participants focus on a single Algebra 1 lesson. Using this lesson, the facilitator guides participants through interactive modeling and practice, using Eureka Math’s replicable three-step process for preparing and customizing lessons. Participants investigate various module components to determine the lesson’s role in the module’s larger story. Day 2 improves participants’ ability to effectively model and teach foundational standards taught in middle school using the tape diagram. Throughout the day, the facilitator models different modes of instructional delivery that engage participants in authentic problem-solving experiences with a variety of word problem types. These activities encourage reflective discussion about the intersection of content and pedagogy. Required Materials: For afternoon practice, participants must bring the module from which they are currently teaching or from which they will teach next.
