Members,

I’m pleased to submit to you oursecond, quarterly edition forSummer 2019. Between theupdated format and the quarterlypublication, there is a lothappening behind the scenes. The new design and an online onlypublication mean that there isspace for more material andphotos of your favorite Jaguar. Weare always looking forcontributions in the form ofarticles and photos, so please donot hesitate to send me yoursubmission. We would love morecoverage of the contemporaryJaguars which have become our“daily” drivers and are wonderfulfrom a performance and designperspective.

Special thanks for Mark Mayugawho seems to have limitlessenergy when it comes to makingthe Club better. As always, we are

factory exhibit piece. So, as the oldcommercial used to go…is it real oris it Memorex? Well, maybe one ofthe XK experts out there is willingto venture a guess as to whether ornot it came from the Factory orsomeone’s labor of love.

a work in progress and open toyour feedback, so do drop me anote with your thoughts on theTales.

I found an interesting item on CL, a cutaway 3.4L Jaguar XK engineand the photos follow. This is anexhibit engine as you would haveseen at a period car show. Allmanufacturers have a historypreparing engines in cutawayform to showcase their latesttechnological advances. In manycases, these engines were actuallyturned manually or by a smallmotor so that the inner workingscould be seen in action.

This particular example may beover 60 years old but there’s not alot of supporting documentationthat comes with the engine and Ican’t find anything on the internet. It needs to be restored also as it isfrozen solid, but worth theendeavor of a “rebuild” if it was a

Drivers Wanted! When I joinedthe JOC in 1969 I was driving a XK150S roadster back and forth towork, Long Beach to Westwoodevery day on the newly completedI405 Freeway. On the weekends itwas wash and shine and find alocal RALLY to participate in. InSanta Monica there was theFRIDAY NIGHTERS rally club. Wewould meet in the SEARS parkinglot about 7:30 PM in the evening, everyone would be checking theirheadlights and fluids, putting new“D cell” batteries in flashlights ormaking sure their Q Beam was

We had rallies that went toEnsenada Mexico that were over350+ miles long starting at midnight and finishing sometime inthe early morning. We also didMonte Carlo style rallies whichwere staged races. You had totravel from point A to B in a certaintime and distance, usually youdrove flat out and then waited at a standoff point so you could zerothe check point. Many times, thecheck point was blind, and youhad to give it your best guess on arriving on the specific time, fun stuff!

The point of all this is that ourJaguar Club use to be a driving andrally club and we are trying tobring that back. Our modern carsare better suited for rallies morethan ever and they were made fordriving. So, lets dust off the carcovers, fill the tank, and let’s getback to driving and having fun!

working. Drivers meeting at8:30 PM and first car out at9:00 PM sharp, finish at midnight.

These were Time DistanceSpeed rallies that were veryintense because theinstructions weredirectional and distanceonly, no street names wereprovided. Instructionswere in miles, tenths ofmiles, east or west, sometimes north, youhad to have a sense ofdirection, a compasswas standardequipment. All thiswas done in the

dark of night in the SantaMonica Mountains, HollywoodHills, or out by Thousand Oaks. Before these areas weredeveloped like they are today. We had other starting points too,Pasadena, Pomona, Corona, andWest Covina. These were ralliesthat traveled through the SanGabriel Mountains, San BernardinoForest, or even out to Victorvilleand back to Palmdale and finish inPasadena or Hollywood. Theyalways started at 9:00 in theevening and would finish well after midnight, sometimes 6:00 AM depending.

At 9:30am on a cloudy SaturdayJune 15th, sixteen Jaguars, oneAston Martin and one Land RoverDiscovery Sport rolled off thestarting line on a 51.1 mile rally tothe Wood Ranch Grill in AnaheimHills with a one hour mandatorystop at the Planes of FameMuseum located at the ChinoAirport. The Rallyers (and scenicdrivers) followed a route thatsnaked through Carbon Canyon, various streets, interstates, highways and byways ending up atthe Wood Ranch Grill some 155minutes later – at least they weresupposed to arrive at that point. All of the teams enjoyed a onehour hiatus at the Planes of Famewhere they got a chance to view alarge collection of Warbirds datingback to the mid 1930’s through themid 1970’s.

Although there were 18 driversand cars on the route including ETypes, both OTS’s and Coupes, aMark VII, an SType, an AstonMartin, a Land Rover, an XJ sedanand several XKR’s; only seven scoresheets were handed in to the rallysteward. The results were asfollows. We had a tie for 1st, 3rd,and 7th places. Tied for first werethe Teams of the Friels (that’s twofirsts for the Friel team in 2019)and the Waite team. Tied for thirdwere the teams of Evans and Kirby.

The other eleven drivers/teamsenjoyed the scenery and roadsalong the way they elected not toturn in their score sheets and justenjoyed the drive and comraderyenjoyed by all. We hope to see allof those who took part in this rallyon July 27th at Rally de PalosVerdes Y San Pedro, Ole! As wellas lots of other members of JOCLA.

These teams were followed by theBoradbent, Sorensen andWittington teams. The Waite teamcame in at 94 minutes driving timeone minute off the par of 95minutes. The Evans team finishedwithin .1 mile of the allotteddistance and the Waite teamfinished within .33 mph of thestandard speed.

May 19, 2019 dawned dark, dreary and wet on the participantsarriving to the Muckenthaler Musseum which was the sire of theJOC Annual Concours.

Nevertheless, many braved the weather and arrived at theconcours field swearing at the elements which destroyed alltheir weeks of preparing and primping their vehicles.

The Muckenthaler Car Show who hosts the JOC Concours lostaround 30% of their field and foot traffic was low. The JOC lostthirteen of our thirty six entrants due to weather and/ormechanical issues.

However we took the weather in stride and proceded with ourConcours.

Twenty three Jaguars were judged in Champion, DrivenPreservation and Special Class. There were also four Jaguars ondisplay.

The Inland Empire and San Diego Jaguar Clubs were alsorepresented.

Even with the poor weather we had four cars in Champion classscore 100.0 points.

The day ended with many attending a early dinner at the Old Sail Ship English Pub in downtown Fullerton.

If you arrive at the establishment driving a Jaguar they willhonor you with a free pint of ale. That pint was mighty tasty!

Thank you for those who competed and attended. Onward tothe next Jaguar Concours in San Diego on July 13, 2019!

Good day to all and thanks for thosewho brought their cars out despite theweather. Vehicle attendance only sawa few vehicles decrease from last year.First off, the lighting was not to myfavor this year. Oh well, that’s the wayit goes sometimes. No blurry shotsthough. Can’t stand those.

This year could have been a totalwashout, but I just saw everyonehaving a blast like the sun was shiningall day. I wiped my XJS off 6 times. Some folks did this even more than Idid. It was raining when I got thereand it rained most of the time through11 or so. The blue tape didn’t come offuntil just before 10. Mark and I sharedsome good humor about the painters’tape. He laughed that great laugh as Iendured jokes like, “Aww…That’s aPOS.” Hahaha! Mark is such a funnyguy. Give the SNL cast of ’76 a run fortheir money. But hey…he even helpedme score a few cleanliness points bywiping my car off! See the photo! Then we went over to Gene and jokedabout him holding about “50 yellowdiapers!” Yessiree….It was jokes thewhole morning with a bit of KJZZ 88.1coming from that radio with thecassette in the background.

About 3 weeks before I put my(Melody and me) 1992 XJS COUPE(can you fix the roster entry Mark,

While I waited for the judging team tofinish up with my car, Steve K., one ofthe judges, said he knew “a greatmobile body guy that could take careof that.” Trust me, I knew this car wasnot perfect, but it’s as close to originalas I could get it, right down to theblack valve stem caps. Mike Zavos alsotold me about a cleaning tool that Idid not know existed to get downdeep into a V12 engine compartment.I did the best I could with atoothbrush and whole lot of SimpleGreen. Then awards ceremonycommenced and, go figure, our carwas the only one in its class. I knewthat, but the score had to be relatedto that “karma” I was talking aboutearlier. It was higher than I expected. Our first “in class win”. What a rush. What a great bunch of people to hangout with for the day. I worked my tailoff getting this car ready. I work a lotof hours during the week and just didmy best once I found out about havingto go Champion for preservation class. However, Karma just might be in playhere. Now I have a whole year toreally get my merde together. Iwonder if anyone else out there canremember their first “In Class Win”?Let’s hear it!

hehe), I did not know thatPreservation cars had to be judged asChampion. This did not give me awhole lot of time to get this cartogether. However, the term“Preservation” is important to mebecause a car is only original ONETIME, that’s it. Nut and bolt restos aregreat and the final product is stunning. On the flipside, if anyone is lucky toget a decent Jag that has not beentouched in major ways, the patina hasits own story. So that’s why I decidedto roll the dice and go with it.Whatever the score, that’s what it is.The final result is at the end.

Do you believe in karma? Well….Ijudged 3 cars in the same class. Markwas on my team. He hasjudged many more carsthan I have. So, I asked hima couple of questions aboutthis and that and he repliedto my satisfaction. I swearour team could not findanything wrong with anycar. I can get really pickysince I evaluate vehicledamage as my primary job.Trust me, I was looking for adeduction but could notfind one. The result wasthree perfect cars.

Hi Kevin

Black roadster has been painted and is on wheels but I put it on hold.

Coupe has been completely restored mechanically and isnow in for paint, which hopefully will be finished inSeptember. It turned out to be a very clean straight body .Not much metal work. Going back to original coloropalescent silver blue. See attached photo.

I’m using RNJ Paint and Body in Northridge. They did thepaint on my roadster and it looks pretty amazing. Hopefully, the coupe will as well. Painters are a difficult lot apparently.I went through three before the roadster was finished .

The Etype is done and the launch party was lastmonth. Lots of photos are attached. Not sure if youknow this, but I am the original owner of the car.

My Jag and Avanti go together besides the fact thatRaymond Lowey used the Etype as inspiration forthe Avanti. Here is my story on both my Jag and theAvanti.

I was a sheetmetal apprentice at the BrooklynNaval shipyard so when they in 1965 closed, theyoffered me a job at the Long Beach Naval shipyardwhich I took. Two years later I bought the housethat I still live in. Meantime my exwife startedsaving to buy my Etype. I wrote a check put it in the salesman's hand and spent the next hournegotiating for that price.

After I bought it, I called AAA for a quote. Back then, they would send an agent to your house to checkout the car. When he saw my Jag he told me thatAAA would not insure that car unless I had a FAMILYcar. I told him the jag was 2 seats husband and wife!He said I had to have a 4 seater car. I then boughtmy Avanti from the original owner. When I gothome I called him to tell him that I had a family carnow. He came out saw the Avanti and startedlaughing, "I thought you said you bought a familycar!” He then told me it was worse now as theywould not even insure the Avanti. So, I got Allstateand kept it there until went to Hagerty.

Through the years of use, ourJaguars develop a patina thatstarts to define our cars as used. There are many products thatpromise to restore, maintain, andrejuvenate various items on yourcar that have shown signs of agingor deterioration. I can tell you frommy own experience there’snothing better than ongoingmaintenance on your car’s bits andpieces.

Older Jags have real chromeplated parts. That means thatcopper, nickel, and finally chrome, coats those original bumpers andtrim bits around the windows anddoors. Maintaining chrome is afulltime commitment, especiallywith all the stuff in the air. And thisis more difficult if you live near theocean like I do. The bestmaintenance for real chrome iswaxing it with car wax. You usechrome cleaner to remove the rustand oxidation (NAVAL JELLY), stainsand tarnish but you use car wax toseal the surface from the pollutionin the air. Modern Jaguars, from1981 to present, use stainless steelin place of chromed steel parts.Stainless steel is much easier tomaintain, just wash it off with soapand water and wax it with car wax. There are cleaner/polishes forstainless available, but if you washyour car regularly the surfaceshould perform as designed, brightand smooth.

the new chemical technologies, two stage paint systems started toappear in the mid80’s. Two stageis when the first stage is the colourcoat and the second stage is theclear coat. There were firstgenerations of this method inwhich the primer/colour base coatwas water based and the clearcoat was synthetic based. Theydidn’t work out too well, the oiland water issue, both materials

The paint on your Jaguar is thenext area to give your undividedattention. Old Jaguars werepainted with one stage enamels. This paint was adequate for thetime and technology available.Waxing was the only way toprotect the finish from rust, UV rayoxidation, bird droppings, tree sap,and smog. It was work keepingthat paint looking great! Paint jobsin a few years was common. Enter

handled heat and weatheringdifferently and so you get the clearseparating from the colour coat. You’ve seen the cars where thepaint looks like its turning white orpeeling off the surface of the car.Early XJ6’s/XJS had this issue, youwould see small crazing or whiteoxidation appearing. Solution, youmust repaint your car, this includestaking the waterbased primer offtoo. Today’s two stage systems arelight years ahead of that oldtechnology. Todays cars clear coatsare UV resistant, compatible withprimer and base coats and theyare multilayered, they performmuch better. Just keep them cleanand an occasional clay cleaningand hand wax application, touchup with Instant Detailer once aquarter.

Interior surfaces on our Jags variesfrom varnished wood, woolcarpeting, leather touch surfaces, and plastic vents and knobs. For

the vinyl coating which will allowdirt to become embedded into theleather. Think of it this way, yourleather seats should be treated thesame way you treat your face oryour skin, use soap but be gentle. The older Jags used varnish on thewood trim pieces without UV andso the varnish would crack andbecome brittle, removing andrefinishing was mandatory andexpensive. Today the wood trimis coated in UV resistant polyurethane coatings and requirebasic maintenance and seldom go bad.

If anyone has anyrecommendations or questionsabout maintaining your car justdrop me a EMAIL([email protected]) and Ican provide you with arecommendation or answer yourquestions. Cheers, Mark M

the older Jags, the leather wasfinished very differently fromtoday’s processes. The leather wasvat dyed, color added to the entireleather skin, this process removeda lot of the natural oils from theleather and required weekly if notmonthly liberal applications of oilreplenishing solutions, i.e. HIDEFOOD which is lanolin, so to findany Jaguar with leather in goodshape is quite rare indeed. Today, leather is dyed with a topicalcolour solution, vinyl based andconsiderably more durable in use.The leather still has much of itsnatural oils and last a lot longer.Keeping the leather clean can beas simple as a damp cloth withmild facial soap to clean or justplain water. There are solutionsout there to use for tough dirtstains, but be gentle when you usethese solutions, especially makingsure the surface is cool and pliable.Strong detergents can break down

Keeping your Jaguar lookingshowroom bright is astraightforward process, “Do itYourself” car wash, professionaldetailer, automatic carwash, andthe traditional car while you wait.Today, you even have crews thatwill come to home or business andgive your car a complete wash andspa day. Well, don’tforget to keep yourengine and othermechanical bits justas clean. I’m talkingabout your engine, transmission, brakes, and airconditioningsystems. These importantparts of your carneed your undividedattention as much asyour paint andleather interiors.Todays carmanufacturers havedesigned cars thatwill give longerservice intervals andextended mileage servicewarranties. Those serviceseventually expire and its up to youto maintain your car to the higheststandards. Don’t wait untilsomething breaks or starts to leak.I still change my oil and filter every3,000 miles to keep those pistonrings and bearings as good as new.Extended oil changes were thedownfall of the early Jaguar V8engines, the oil acid buildupattacked the plastic timing chain

is rated TOP TIER, this means thatthe gas contains solvents that keepyour fuel injectors clean at thespray nozzle, BUT they also areexposed to carbon from thecombustion cycle and can and doget dirty. Solution use a quality fuelinjection additive like TECHRON,SEA FOAM, LIQUID MOLY, or LUCAS

FI cleaner once amonth. If you do alot of slowcommuter driving,I wouldrecommend twicea month.

Oil thickeners areok if you have100,000 plus milesand you notice oilconsumption, some work likeLUCAS OILCONDITIONER, butagain, keeping youroil very clean willdelay piston ringwear and keepyour bearings andseals fresh and

working properly. Most AutomaticTransmissons today are sealed forlife, don’t you believe it, they havesynthetic oil in them, and it alsooxidizes like any oil and becomesdirty, change your oil every 50,000miles. If you still have a traditionaltransmission that uses DEXTRON orMERCON Transmission oil, Irecommend a change every 30,000miles or sooner if you do stop andgo. Also make sure the trans coolerlines are kept fresh, they become

tensioners and boom, when theylet go, new engine. 5,000 miles isthe absolute maximum I wouldallow on any oil despite what themanual says.

“Stop and Go” driving is killer, moisture in oil creates acids in youroil, short trips to the market neverreally gets your oil and exhaust

system hot enough to burn awaythat moisture, result, sludge thatbuilds up on the piston rings, oilpassages, and engine sump, rustedout exhaust systems. The fuelstoday are much cleaner and burnmore efficiently. No more lead inthe gasoline so no valve jobs every30,000 miles or spark plugchanges. Keeping the fuel injectionsystem is imperative to long lifeand fuel economy and topperformance. Most quality gasoline

hard from heat and chemicalreaction. I use TRANS X in my oldertransmissions, keeps the seals soft.I had transmission in my XJ6 thatlasted 255,000 miles when it finallydecided it had enough.

Change your brake fluid every50,000 miles with DOT 4 SyntheticBrake Fluid. Make sure you flushthe system to get rid of themoisture that accumulates fromuse, cold to hot to cold, this cyclecreates a chemical reaction andyour brake fluid attacks your pistonseals, not good, leaking calipers,
