ADVENTURE CAMPS

ADVENTURE CAMPSTraditional classroom Aftercare is replaced by Backyard Games. Backyard games, offered in the BREC recreation center facility, is a co-ed after camp program allowing campers to enjoy backyard games including Ladderball, Bean-Bag toss, Spikeball and more.

Campers enrolled in Backyard Games are escorted from their camp to the BREC building. Pick up by 6pm is required.

NEW! Young ArchitectsStacked, overlap and stagger are a few of the techniques used by LEGO designers to create original minifig scale models. Further your skills using basic 2x2 and 2x4 bricks and take a hands-on history lesson building pyramids, castles, suspension bridges, the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, and the famous Ferris Wheel, just to name a few. Continue to the next level of creating using technic pieces that allow movement using gears, pins, axles and motors. Explore what gears do and get to the bottom of the “gear ratio” and how friction and non-friction influence movement. Campers will present an original design on Friday.

NEW! Fashion DesignGet ready for the runway! Learn, design and create with our new fashion design camp located in Brookdale’s fashion design studio. Learn the basic fundamentals of sewing, expressed through a small take-home project.

App Attack! Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app & game development tool, campers explore the world of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of App publishing functions. Camper-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Publishing to App Stores not included. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Campers work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Make Your First Video Game!If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind camp that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Make Your First 3-D Video Game!A new version of a Black Rocket classic! This camp allows you to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of traditional 2D game design and create an immersive 3D world. Campers will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of gameplay, and storytelling. Camper created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Campers work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Minecraft Designers Love Minecraft? Always wanted to design your own world? This camp is for you! Learn how to create a custom map, the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design your very own objects. Build with Redstone and Command blocks, and create custom textures to import at home or share with friends. To access their project at home, campers must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent email address is required to use 3D modeling software. Campers work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Virtual Reality: The Future is NowEmbark on an EPIC adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting edge camp, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created. VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. Campers do not need a mobile device to take the class, but to use the VR headset a camper will need access to an Android or Apple mobile device. Campers will storyboard their own escape missions while friends attempt to outmaneuver using the drone to locate and capture. First, llearn about the basic safety of drone flying and the history behind drone racing as a sport. From there, campers will progress through skill challenges and learn how to perform exercises and maneuvers to become familiar with drone speed and agility. Flight squads post up against one another in friendly competition racing themselves and the clock. Maneuver through creative obstacle courses before taking on the challenge of flying for speed. Throughout the week, Instructors will pose various challenges the campers will solve using drones. Missions include: Connect 4, Drone Basketball, King Kong, International Space Station Drone Docking, Harry The Hiker, and more. Throughout the week, campers prepare for the concluding event: the Ultimate Drone Games where students collaborate, strategize, create drone missions, and compete with one another. Campers will use the SWIFT programming language to accomplish many of these missions.

HISTORY & MYSTERYCalling All American Civil War Buffs!Forward! March! Civil War buffs, this is the camp for you! The past will come alive through a series of audio-visual presentations including firsthand accounts from soldiers and civilians, original battlefield photographs, and film clips. Learn about both Union and Confederate armies and their battles, and the generals who led them. Come and discover the how and why behind the major battles of the war. Please note: PG-13 rated film clips contain mild battle violence.

Paranormal Investigators Wanted!Are you a fan of ghost hunting shows on TV? This is your chance for hands-on experience using EMF and K-2 Meters, the SB-7 Radio, static detectors, and laser grids. Explore the methods and technology used by ghost hunters. Discuss the Salem Witch Trials, Amityville and Roswell. Examine audiovisual evidence as well as the history behind famous legends and lore. Camp concludes with field trip to the historic (and haunted) Strauss Mansion Museum in Atlantic Highlands. Note: this camp deals with theories and assessments of unexplained phenomena that may not be suitable for some children.

JFK Assassination Investigation and Mock TrialConduct a week-long investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone or was he part of a conspiracy? We will study audiovisual evidence, eye witness statements, and medical reports to see if we can find the answer. The camp will end with a debate and mock trial of Lee Harvey Oswald.

Politics and Debate CampCalling all young debaters and politicians! Join us as we examine social and political theories, laws, and governments from around the world and how they impact societies. Current “hot topics” events, and what’s going on in the world will guide us throughout the week as we discuss and debate. Examine pivotal moments in history. No two camps are alike! Be prepared for an intense week of debating and critical thinking. Debate teams are welcome to bring their own material to sharpen their skills.

LAW AND ORDERDay in CourtPlay the roles of judge, defendant, plaintiff, witness, lawyer, bailiff or juror in several mock trials. Learn how to make opening and closing statements, how to phrase objections and how to question witnesses. FAST START FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Fast Start Program - Summer 2018Attend college this summer! Enroll in college-level courses at Brookdale Community College through the Fast Start Program. Summer III Term courses start on July 5, 2018.

What is the Fast Start Program? The Fast Start Program allows qualified high school sophomores, juniors, seniors and home schooled students to enroll in college-level courses at Brookdale. Students may enroll in one or two courses during Brookdale’s Summer III Term (July 5 – August 15)

How do students qualify for the Fast Start Program?To qualify for the Fast Start Program, students must have completed the 9th grade, be at least 15 years old, and pass all sections of Accuplacer. Please review a detailed list of requirements at www.brookdalecc.edu/fast-start
