INTRODUCTION
LaN | WORK/SHOP is based in Barcelona, Spain, and will approach the investigation of the urban domain through the use of scripting and digital fabrication. The often disconnected resolutions of the urban scale and tectonic systems and are brought together for the purpose of fabricating site specific interventions in the various urban typologies of Barcelona. Participants will engage the city through two weeks of intense observation and documentation in concert with software and fabrication tutorials which will feed the final fabricated works.
Professional and student architects, urbanists, designers, artists [and related fields], are invited to Barcelona from August 8th through August 22nd 2008. The workshop will facilitate collaboration of individuals from a broad applicant base in order to generate new forms of interventions that will be directly deployed and documented within the urban domain of Barcelona. Space is limited, late applications will be considered only if space is available.
PROJECT BRIEF
Participants will be introduced to the realm of digital fabrication through a series of projects that use the city of Barcelona as a living, breathing classroom. In the midst of learning digital tools necessary to complete the project (Rhino, fabrication equipment / theory), participants will be asked to study intricate spaces throughout the city. Participants will take part in intensive rhino classes, scripting tutorials, mapping and theoretical discussion, digital fabrication technologies / case studies, and will ultimately fabricate a project using the laser cutting and cnc (routing) production techniques.

IaaC is an international centre of education and research that focuses on architecture understood as a discipline that encompasses different scales, ranging from territorial analysis, urban development, architectural projects and digital fabrications to informational environments.
Located in Barcelona, one of the international capitals of Urbanism, the institution develops a multidisciplinary program that explores urban and international territorial
phenomena, placing especial emphasis on the opportunities that emerges from developing countries and the cultural, economic and social values that architecture may contribute to society.
Some of the most important projects and publications done by Iaac recently are Hipercatalunya (a research about the territory of Catalonia) The Media House (a project developed with the MIT’s Media Lab) and the Metapolis Dictionary of Advanced Architecture.
In addition to research programmes and international projects, the agenda is completed with lectures, excursions, exhibitions, publications and competitions.

LaN focuses on DIGITAL FABRICATION as a means to forwarding composite processes/collaborations driving architectural development. LaN recognizes the power of digital fabrication, not merely as a toolset of of a high technical caliber, but as the driver of particular groupings of resources–an organization of human, economic, and material
assets–varying widely based on project circumstances. LaN’s mode of operation is parametric in nature, and seeks to with re-associate architecture with a flexible, non-authoritative, temporal, & data-rich practice of spatial design.
