Row 1: Knit Row 2: Purl Ribbed tube for handle (See alternate handle on last page) - Divide existing 50 stitches evenly onto two size 8 DPNs by transferring the sts alternately (place 1 st onto the first DPN and the next st on the other DPN) between two DPN needles held in right hand ending up with 25 sts on eac h needle. Work sts from front DPN needle in a K1, P1 ribbing for a total for 4 rows ending with a P1,K1 row. Using size H/8 crochet hook, slip st down side to 2 nd DPN needle which is held in back. Repeat 4 rows of the K1, P1 ribbing. ( Note: The first row will be rather tight, but will loosen as you knit).

Yarn: 

2 Skeins of Plymouth Fantasy Naturale (100% Mercerized Cotton) – 1 colorfor A and 1 color for B (Sample pattern: Color A #1112 Yellow and ColorB is # 4548 Peach)

Materials:

US size 7 straight knitting needles, US size 8 DPNs, US size H/8 crochethook, cable needle, tapestry needle, purse handles and one fat quarter forlining

Gauge:

4.5 sts = 1 inch in stockinette, on US Size 7 needle

Rejoining stitches: Hold both DPN needles in left hand and transfer stitches alternately back onto the opposite endof your size 7 knitting needles – meaning that your yarn will be ready to knit.

Body:Row 20: Purl, alternating colors when needed

Bind-off next row in purl stitch.

Blocking: Before blocking, soak in Eucalan for 15 minutes, do not rinse but roll up in a towel to remove excessmoisture. Leave on towel to completely dry. Once dry and using iron with steam setting, wrong side facing, gently

press seams open.

Lining: Your choice of fabric to match yarn color. Piece should measure approximately 7 ½” wide by 8 ½” longfinished (seams sewn neatly). Sew up sides, leaving ½” opening at top for handle to fit into, then attach to bag; withwrong sides facing, attach at base of tube on each side.

Finishing: Using mattress stitch and with wrong sides facing, sew up sides – begin at least ½” from the bottom of the tube for handle. Insert pins of handle into each tube – viola, you have a handbag.

Alternate Handle:

If using any other type of handle that is a “solid” piece, after Row 2 of the beginning of the pattern, simple complete aK1,P1 rib until ribbing measures 2”, ending with wrong side; start with pattern for the body of the bag, until reaching

the opposite end and complete a K1,P1 rib for 2”, ending the wrong side and purl the row; bind-off next row in purlstitch.

Finishing: With wrong side facing, fold ribbing in ½ over handle and sew in place; repeat for second handle and thenusing mattress stitch and with wrong sides facing, sew up sides – begin at least ½” from the bottom the handles.
