MY FIRST MUSIC CAMP | AGES: 4-6Parti cipants will learn about and make music instruments. They will also view “Elmo’s Musical Adventure” and see Prokofi ev’s “Peter and the Wolf” story brought to life. A “Peter and the Wolf” book will be made and acted out in a mini-play. Parti cipants will also sing songs, play percussion instruments and much more! BAND CAMP | RISING GRADES 6-12MUSIC PERFORMANCE TOUR CAMP: “JAMMIN THROUGH THE YEARS” MUSIC FROM THE 1920’S TO PRESENTPrerequisite: Must have one year of instructi on in voice or any musical instrument. Equipment: Bring your band/orchestra instrument or guitar. Pianos will be provided.Parti cipants who act, dance, sing or play more than one musical instrument will have the opportunity to showcase these talents, if desired. Please call Kimberly Haywood at 441-5833 if you would like to discuss your child’s talents. Parti cipants will rehearse musical selecti ons the fi rst week of camp and perform at local recreati on centers during the second week of camp. On performance dates (8/07, 8/08, 8/09) parti cipants should be dropped off at performance sites. On August 9th, parti cipants may parti cipate in a cast party held at Lakewood Dance & Music Center aft er the recreati on center performance if they so desire.Tennis shoes should be worn to camp and parti cipants should bring a drink and snack. PERCUSSION CAMP | RISING GRADES 7-12Prerequisite: Must have one year of instructi on in snare drum or instructor’s permissionParti cipants will review basic drum rudiments and note reading. Basic and intermediate rock drum set beats will be taught. The xylophone will be introduced to parti cipants who have not played the instrument and reviewed for parti cipants who already play the xylophone. Hand drumming will also be introduced. SUMMER PLUNGE | AGES: 6-18Attire: All parti cipants must wear proper swimming atti re and bring their own towel. Goggles are not required but are allowed. Swim shoes are not required but are encouraged for the Berkley and Chesterfi eld outdoor pools.Summer Plunge is a free program that transports young people from various Norfolk neighborhoods to three City pools -- Huntersville, Chesterfi eld, and Berkley. The program provides opportuniti es for Norfolk youth to learn water safety and basic swimming skills while parti cipati ng in fun water acti viti es. The Summer Plunge program runs seasonally from July to August. Registrati on by a parent/guardian is required. Registrati on forms are available at area recreati on centers. VOCAL CAMP | RISING GRADES 1-2; 3-5; 6-8; 9-12Parti cipants will learn music that is age appropriate. Elementary students will learn the solfege syllables (do, re, mi etc). Middle and high school students will work on sight reading skills. All students will learn and study rhythms that are age appropriate.

Enjoy local beaches, state parks, Tides baseball games, movies and much more. Bring a bag lunch and drink each day. The schedule of daily camp acti viti es will be available at registrati on. CAMP INSPIRED | RISING GRADES 7-12Camp Inspired is a curriculum-driven, teen leadership program off ered free of charge and is sponsored by the Department of Recreati on, Parks & Open Space (RPOS) in partnership with Teens With a Purpose (TWP). Camp Inspired is led by teen peer leaders who mentor other teens regarding issues that they face on a daily basis to include self-esteem, pregnancy and STDs. The curriculum is evidenced-based and approved by the Center for Disease Control and Preventi on.

Through the Learn 2 Lead Program campers will uti lize skits, role play, games, quizzes and videos as part of the ETR’s Reducing Risk: Building Skills to Prevent Pregnancy, STD’s & HIV curriculum. They will have the opportunity to build self-esteem, independence and leadership skills and will be given a chance to “teach back” what they have learned. Upon completi on of Learn 2 Lead, campers will qualify to become part of TWP’s Peer Facilitators & Mentors-in-Training Team and will be eligible to assist during TWP community workshops; plan teen events; conti nue training provided to TWP Members year-round; and receive incenti ve.

Eligibility: Parti cipants must be City of Norfolk residents. Registrati on is accepted on a fi rst-come, fi rst-serve basis. Status is pending unti l confi rmati on is received. Depending on program demand, confi rmed registrati ons may have to be determined via a lott ery process. Campers may request to att end more than one session. Those with an end of session evaluati on of average or higher will be allowed to repeat based on space availability. Enrollment: Min. 20; Max. 30

DIGITAL CONNECTORS CAMP | RISING GRADES 9-12Rising Grades 9-12Digital Connectors® Camp is a curriculum-driven, teen leadership program off ered free-of-charge and is sponsored by the Department of Recreati on, Parks & Open Space (RPOS) in partnership with One Economy Corporati on. Young people, in rising grades 9-12, will develop their talent and skills in technology as well as leadership to prepare them for success in the 21st Century workplace. They will receive training and parti cipate in community service opportuniti es in the areas of technology instructi on, technical support, digital media, marketi ng, workforce readiness and leadership development.

Digital Connectors® curriculum introduces core leadership values and life management skills, teaches basic and advanced digital literacy skills and exposes youth to post-secondary and career choices. Camp parti cipants will learn how to network computer labs, connect wireless access points, design computer training modules and create social media projects prompti ng them to put broadband and Internet technology to the greatest use in their communiti es. Additi onally, they will learn about fi nancial management, entrepreneurship and civic engagement.

Eligibility: Parti cipants must be City of Norfolk residents. Campers are selected based on content of applicati on and face-to-face interview performance and must agree to att end the enti re eight-week program. Registrati on status is pending unti l confi rmati on is received. Certi fi cati on and incenti ves will be provided to parti cipants who successfully meet all the requirements of the program.
