President’s Message
1878
Will Hine, D.D.S.
Paying it forward—I was surfing my Facebook page the
other day and came across a story written by a colleague. It seems he was getting ready to do a procedure on a new patient and recognized his last name as being the same as a patient he had in dental school nearly 15 years ago. As it turns out, the patient in the chair was the son of the dental school patient. Now we all remember dental school and the stresses of clinic attendance require-ments, competencies and points. Well, this patient always came on time, never com-plained if there was a delay or change in treatment, and ended up having the needed treatment that helped my friend graduate from IUSD. Flash forward and now his son is in the dental chair. After the procedure, the patient went up to pay and was told there was no charge. He was told, “your father paid for your treatment 15 years ago.”
How do we remember those who helped us along the way? How can we “pay it forward” in our practice and daily lives? You see, no matter how independent we like to imagine we are, there are always those who were there at just the right time. My
friend who decided to recognize the help he received from a past experience by paying it forward in the present understands this notion.
I have spoken to so many fellow den-tists who do pay it forward and I encourage all of us to find a way to do that daily. Don’t discount what a simple “thank you” or tak-ing an extra minute to listen to someone express a worry they are having will mean. Throwing in an extra $4.00 to pay for the coffee for the person in the drive-through line behind you could put a smile on some-one’s face that will last the entire day. In a world that often seems chaotic and cold, it is often the little things that make the big-gest difference. To give, without expectation of thanks…what a great example we can be to others.
I would like to close by challenging all of us to find a way to pay it forward. You might just find that you benefit more than anyone.
I would like to point out a couple of opportunities your Dental Society has for you in the coming months. On June 26th, we will have a Collections and Medical Malpractice seminar. The annual IDDS Foundation Golf Tourney is July 17th at Hillcrest Country Club. This is your opportunity to have a great day while helping YOUR IDDS Foundation. Our President’s Fall workshop this year will be on September 11. Our topic for this work-shop will be on the Peer Review process, how it can help you and how to avoid being there in the first place. Any nominations for the fall election are due September 12. And don’t forget about our Fall General Membership Meeting on October 1.
