Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is marking its 90th birthday with its wildest party ever on May 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can expect to enjoy music, games, presents, and, of course, birthday cake! eight regional bakeries are working feverishly to bake their wildest creations and will take part in a Great Cake Bake Off that will be judged by hometown ce-lebrities, the Twice Baked Twins. Well-known and local favorite ra-dio host, WiCC’s Jim Buchanan will serve as emcee for this fun-fi lled celebration. The birthday party is free with paid admission to the Zoo and will take place rain or shine.

“We are so excited to celebrate our birthday with everyone and having eight cakes to choose from is every little kid’s dream come

true,” shared Gregg dancho, Zoo director. “My recommendation is: don’t come that day if you’re on a diet!”

local bakeries facing off in the Great Cake Bake-Off include adam’s Bakery of Fairfi eld, Billy’s Bakery of Fairfi eld, del Prete italian Pastry of Bridge-port, disorbo’s italian Bakery of hamden, dorazio sisters Bakery of Newtown, lucibello’s ital-

ian Pastry shop of New haven, luigi’s italian Pastry & Wed-ding Cake Center of Bridgeport, and stew leonard’s of danbury. each bakery will create a three tiered, frosted, zoo-and birthday-themed cake to be judged on taste, look, and theme. Visitors may view the cakes in the Carou-sel Building beginning at 10 a.m. and the Twice Baked Twins will announce the winners at 1 p.m. Guests may sample the cakes after 1 p.m. while supplies last. Prizes will be awarded in the fol-lowing categories: Best in show, Best Zoo/Birthday theme, Best looking, Best Frosting, Best Fla-vor, Best Cake Texture, People’s Choice, and Kid’s Choice.

The Twice Baked Twins, Joy Paoletti and Judy Vig of Monroe and Trumbull, are identical twins who got their start by turning their love of baking into a delec-table dessert business focusing on elaborate displays and presenta-tion. They entered a Bobbly Flay contest called “Grill it with Bob-by,” and the network loved them so much they invited them back to do a holiday special called, “dear Food Network.” enjoying television so much, they contin-ued to earn a spot on Channel 3’s Better Connecticut, where they share classic recipes with a new twist, called the “Twice Baked 2 Minute Take.”

The birthday bash continues on sunday, May 20 as the Zoo celebrates Bridgeport day. all Bridgeport residents are invited to visit to the Zoo for a reduced admission fee of just $5 with proper i.d.

WeBe 108 will be on site wel-coming visitors who will have the chance to meet and greet with city offi cials, business and civic lead-ers, friends, and neighbors dur-

Quassy Amusement Park is putting a new spin on family fun this year.

A tea cup ride will be intro-duced at Quassy for the park’s 104th year. It features six family-sized cups with individually con-trolled spinning action all revolv-ing on a rotating platform. The end result will be an interactive, fun experience for all age groups.

Coastermania In 2011 Quassy Amusement

Park introduced its new marquee attraction, the “Wooden Warrior” roller coaster. Since opening in April of last year, the ride has re-ceived worldwide acclaim from roller coaster and theme park en-thusiasts alike.

Earlier this year, the “Wooden Warrior” was named Attraction of the Year (2011) in a ballot by “Behind the Thrills,” a theme park enthusiasts’ website. The coaster was also voted “Third Best New Ride” worldwide in the 2011 Golden Ticket awards, presented by industry publication

Amusement Today. Rides And More Quassy Amusement Park fea-

The Palace Theater is set to paint the town blue when the national tour of the uniquely col-orful performance troupe, Blue Man Group, comes to Waterbury for three performances, May 22-24, at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the show, spon-

sored by Webster Bank, WTNH/MyTV9, CL&P and Yankee Gas -- Northeast Utilities Companies, and Adam Broderick Salon and Spa are $69, $59, $49, and can be purchased by phone at (203) 346-2000, online at www.palace-theaterct.org, or in person at the Palace Theater Box Offi ce, lo-cated at 100 East Main Street in Waterbury. Groups of 15 or more qualify for discounted rates and should call the Group Sales hot-line at (203) 346-2012.

Although Blue Man Group has toured previously with its Mega-star arena rock show, this marks the fi rst theatrical production to tour North America. The tour will feature classic Blue Man

moments, as well as brand new content, that will center around a proscenium-sized LED curtain and a high-resolution screen that creates an entirely new visual experience for Broadway houses across the nation.

The critically acclaimed Blue Man Group creates experiences that defy categorization. They are best known for multi-media performances that feature three bald and blue characters who take the audience on a journey that is funny, intelligent, and visually captivating. Blue Man Group is accompanied by a live band, whose stunning tribal rhythms help drive the show to its excel-lence.

“Until now, we have never mounted a touring version of our theatrical production,” says Blue Man Group co-founder Philip Stanton. “We needed to fi nd a way to transform theatres of all shapes and sizes into spaces in which the Blue Man can intimately connect with the audience, where the au-

dience can become engaged with the spirit of the show and of the Blue Man himself. We have fi -nally fi gured it out, and an audi-ence member in a theatre that seats 4,500 people or so will now be able to enjoy the same intimate experience that might be had in one of our smaller theatres.”

The fi rst "bathing suits" for women were introduced in the early 1800s. At that time it was still consid-ered improper for skin to be shown in public. The

fi rst "suits" were composed of long sleeved bath-ing dresses with woolen bloomers underneath to weigh the dress down. The only "swimming" a

woman did at that time was to jump waves at the edge of the water and dip her feet, and occasionally legs, into the water.

Join us this June to experi-ence the exciting sights, smells and sounds of steam on the Nau-gatuck railroad! hank the Tank engine returns as Flagg Coal #75 leading several trips over our sce-nic railroad between June 8 and Father’s day, June 17, departing from Thomaston station. This is a special event you will not want to miss!

The hiss of steam, the steady chugging of the engine, the call of the whistle echoing off the hills… These were the sounds of the iron horse, the american steam loco-motive, the Machine That Built america. Those sounds will be heard again in Thomaston this June 8 - 17 as the railroad Mu-seum of New england hosts hank the Tank, also known as Flagg Coal Co. #75.

Between the 1830s and 1960, steam locomotives carried pas-sengers and freight to every cor-ner of america. They became part of our national history, a symbol of mobility and change. Over the years, steam locomotives be-came larger and more effi cient. But technology advances after

World War ii changed the face of railroading forever. By 1948, steam engines were gone from the Naugatuck Valley, replaced by modern diesel locomotives on the New haven railroad from Bridgeport to Winsted, ending an important era in modern indus-trial history.

Flagg Coal Co. #75 is a 40 ton coal-fi red steam locomotive built in 1930. it worked in Pennsyl-vania coal mines and New york rock quarries until it was retired in 1953. #75 rusted away, forgot-ten until 1991, when it was pur-chased by father and son team John and Barney Gramling from indiana. The Gramlings moved #75 to their farm and fully re-stored it to operating condition, completing it October 2001. since then, #75 has since trav-eled as far as Florida, Michigan, and North Carolina as a living, breathing ambassador of ameri-can steam railroading. This event also features storybook readings

of hank the Tank, written by Pat Gramling, winner of international Book award in 2011, Children’s Picture Book Category. We will also feature live music, games and activities for kids of all ages.

The railroad Museum of New england is a not for profi t histori-cal and educational organization. Our main offi ce is located in our train station at 242 east Main st. in Thomaston. Our mission is to preserve, restore, interpret and display for current and future generations the railroad culture and heritage of New england. We offer an entertaining and sce-nic train ride along the Naugatuck river from our historic 1881 train station. Our operating subsidiary, the Naugatuck railroad Compa-ny, (NrC) operates the 19.5 miles of track between Waterbury and Torrington with vintage locomo-tives, passenger and freight cars and cabooses. Both rMNe and NrC are all-volunteer organiza-tions.

You have thought long and hard about adding a pool to cre-ate a backyard oasis. so, once you have reached the decision to proceed, where you start can put you on smooth track to getting the project completed in a profes-sional, timely manner and, most importantly, within your budget with a professional swimming

pool contractor. The best way to fi nd a contrac-

tor is through a referral or friend who has used the business and is happy with their services. Outside of that, contact a few reputable businesses that have been estab-lished, can give you references on the spot, and offer follow-through services such as a retail store for all your pool needs, water analy-sis, and a service department that is familiar with the products you will have on your pool.

Make sure, fi rst and foremost, they are licensed and insured. in Connecticut, that means a home contractors and sP1 for the own-er and an sP2 license for their employees indicating the level of training provided. Those un-

licensed and uninsured may give you a better price on the job but you leave yourself unprotected should the job be incomplete or worse. you may want to ask how long their employees have been with them, signaling they are a good employer to work for and the crew is experienced, not just seasonal.

Most companies will go out to your home and give free esti-mates as to the cost of the project. if you get more than one estimate than compare apples to apples as

to what you are getting with each, i.e. fi lter system, style of plumb-ing, number of return lines. There is top-of-the-line and cheaper equipment, so do your home-work.

ask if excavation is included and up to what level or amount of hours. One company may list something as an option while an-other may include it in the pack-age.

a good estimate includes the total package, which will give you an idea of not only what the pool itself will cost but also what you will need in your budget for the electrician, water, fencing, decking, and offers referrals so, should you not know anyone in those fi elds, the process is stream-lined and it all gets done.

The bottom line is that the cheapest estimate may not be your fi rst choice. after consider-ing hard facts, you will follow your gut, such as you heard good things about this guy, or you liked the way this one envisioned what your yard would look like when completed, or one was more of a salesman while the other seemed more honest about the whole pro-cess.

remember, this is a big ticket purchase and, hopefully, a rela-tionship where you deal with the company for years to come and, in the end, you have to be able to feel good that you are dealing with someone you can trust.

Waverly, Baxter’s, And Vic House Labor Of Love For Local Owner

It began in 2004 when lo-cal restauranteur august Cipully bought the Victorian house at 226

Maple avenue. The Vic house is the perfect dichotomy of a rustic “peanut shells on the fl oor” pub and three quaint Victorian dining rooms. What started as a sincere interest to create a friendly atmo-sphere where people could enjoy great food at an affordable price quickly became a passion.

as the Vic house became more successful, augie set his sights on another restaurant in Wallingford in July of 2009. located at 728 North Colony road, K.T. Bax-

ter's is one of the few non-chain restaurants on route 5 that offer freshly made food at comparable prices. Both restaurants serve a wide variety of all-american fare at reasonable prices. Both menus offer everything from wraps and salads to sumptuous steaks, chicken, and seafood entrees. and in the warmer months, customers can sit outside on the patio of ei-ther restaurant. Whether inside or outside, both places capture that “at home” feeling of eating with

family and friends.lastly, in November of 2011,

augie took on his biggest chal-lenge. he bought and renovated Cheshire's oldest and most histor-ical landmark and renamed it its original name, The Waverly inn. located at 286 Maple avenue, the Waverly serves modern american food with an italian fusion. augie kept the original saratoga bar and refi nished it to make it the heart of the new place. The front din-ing room has been completely

redecorated so that its patrons feel they are dining in Tuscany. The banquet hall, which can ac-commodate up to 125 people, is the perfect place to host showers, receptions, reunions, or bereave-ments. The Waverly inn is the ideal place to go for anyone who wants a subtle step up from casual dining to more upscale fare.

augie and his staff welcome everyone to come and break bread with them.

Many men and women with a passion for gardening hope to one day have a greenhouse they can call their own. Though greenhouses are a great place for gardeners to hone their crafts, they can also be quite expensive, and there are some things garden-ers should consider before build-ing a greenhouse.

* Size: a greenhouse can be

grandiose or small in stature. The size of a greenhouse depends on the gardener and the amount of property available. larger green-houses can be breathtaking, but the homeowner in you might not want a greenhouse to domi-nate your entire property. if your planting plans are relatively mod-est, a bigger greenhouse probably doesn't make much sense.

* Cost: Greenhouses can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Price should not dictate which green-house you buy, so if you want a large one but can only afford a small one, then it might be best to keep saving money until you can afford one that meets your needs.

* Use: if you plan to use the greenhouse just during the stan-dard gardening seasons, then you won't need to heat it. however, most greenhouse owners want to use the greenhouse year-round, in which case you will need to heat the interior. in addition, those

who want to keep gardening dur-ing the dog days of summer will have to ventilate the greenhouse.

* Location: The greenhouse will need to be in a place on the property that gets lots of sun. Be-fore buying or building a green-house, choose an area on the property where plants will thrive. if that area is currently used for something else, ask yourself and those who share the home with you if converting that part of the property to a greenhouse is some-thing they can all live with. you don't want the greenhouse to neg-atively impact your life.

There Are Many Issues To Consider Before Erecting That First Greenhouse

Aqua Masters Has The Knowledgeable, Personable Staff To Help

We all know that proper maintenance is important to the things we care about in our lives: our homes' heating and cooling systems, our automobiles' tires, lubrication, and safety equip-ment.

What most people do not know is that our watches need periodic care as well.

Watches that have batteries need to have the battery changed

Since 1984, aqua Masters has been providing pool service

and repair to the Cheshire/south-ington area. Our service depart-ment and expanded retail store are located in Plantsville Center. What are the advantages of a lo-cal family business? Personal-ized service and our technicians and retail store staff are licensed and trained. While your pool is closed during the winter season, our employees are attending li-

censed training programs, not selling Christmas trees. Continu-ing education is a priority: the staff receives training in equip-ment repairs, opening and closing pools, as well as water testing and analysis.

The off season training allows aqua Masters to keep on pace with new technology. The core staff all has at least 10 years of experience in the pool business. Just try to fi nd that in a big box store.

The retail store is staffed with knowledgible employees who

you can use as a resource. you need a part? Our parts depart-ment is fully stocked and the re-tail employees can assist you on how to use those parts. Pool water is cloudy or green? We have the

products and the knowledge to clear that pool for you.

aqua Masters has the personal service and the knowledge and training to get your pool to look and run the way it should.

once a year. do not wait for the watch to stop. Batteries left in too long can leak and cause corrosion damage that can be more expensive than a yearly battery change. Watches with mainsprings, manual, wind, or automatic need to be cleaned and lubricated every three to fi ve years to preserve their accuracy and durability.

Fine quality and treasured heir-loom watches should be cared for and maintained on a regular basis, just like our homes and autos. a little preventative maintenance can insure a long life for your fa-vorite time piece.
