President’s Message

Welcome to the 2010 Poodle Club of Canada Specialty shows and

trials edition of the Poodle Scene.

This season’s shows and trials continue the long tradition of

celebrating our wonderful breed of dog.

The poodle breed is exceptionally versatile. Originally a water

retriever, the breed has evolved to excel at almost any task. Equally at

home in the conformation show ring, a circus ring, a hospital room or

a sheep pen, the poodle has a can- do attitude.

Whether a sporting dog, a service dog or a faithful companion, the

poodle is without compare.

Let us continue to push the boundaries of what our poodles can be

and do.

I would like to thank all the members that have made the Poodle Club

of Canada’s 2010 shows and trials season a success, without their

work and dedication none of these events would have happened.

I wish you all continued luck, in all your trials and shows, until next

time we gather together.

Ontario Regional Show June 2010 Report I would like to thank the club for allowing me to be show chair for the regional in Ontario. Things seemed to fall in place. The entry as expected was down. I do hope that the executive takes into consideration what is being said to the club about location and how the judges are chosen. I cannot thank Susan Fraser enough for stepping up to the plate and making the trophy money happen. Also to Jeannette Hagen for making sure that the plates and cups arrived safe and sound. Number of entries according to catalogue; Conformation: Toy 8, Mini 15, Standard 23 entered under Judge Mr. Alan Pepper; Obedience 11, entered under Judge Cheryl A. Bishop; Rally 13 entered under Judge Marie Sawford David Pateman handled all the receipts from the show, we look forward to the full accounting soon to confirm if we made or lost money Of course the event would not have been a success without the generous support of the members who volunteered to assist at daily events or to those who donated to the regional trophy fund and to the silent auction table. June 12, 2010 Poodle Club of Canada WC/I/X tests Our tests went fine: we had decent numbers including the one poodle Blue. It was a fine sunny warm day and we had a BBQ for the judges and anyone who helped us. Our local clubs loaned us equipment. We had our green dog stakes (VERY informal) during the lunch hour with three poodles and one young flatcoat present. Our hired bird boy (Kevin), our Marshal (Margot) and our conscripted bird boy (my husband Rowan) were marvelous and worked hard all day. The rosettes were BEAUTIFUL – thanks to Cheryl Ingwerson who sent them out to us very quickly indeed and to Emily who arranged (and, I think, donated) their creation – people remarked that they were the nicest they had ever seen at a WC/I/X event. Our Poodle Club of Canada team for the events was:

• Margot Jorgensen (hunt marshal extraordinaire

• my husband Rowan Laver (honorary member-for-the-day) - along with our hired boy, shot starter pistols and threw ducks all day, and made the BBQ lunch for our judges and support folks.

• Suzanne Loblaw: Lent poodle support (two of her own poodles) for the green dog stakes

• Cheryl Ingwerson – our faithful representative to the PCC who sent us the beautiful rosettes and much guidance.

• Emily Cain who donated the rosettes to PCC

• To the left is our team-on-the-spot: Margot and Rowan with the toy poodle Sky: The tests went well under our fine judges Bill Pearson and Judy Teskey. The judges were lovely and friendly and very good at explaining their expectations and setting tests at the appropriate levels. In all, we had 7 WC dogs entered, 10 WCI, and 5 WCX. There were labs, goldens, flat coats, a duck toller and the one poodle. CONFORMATION CHAMPION Can/UKC CH Bibelot Tolka VIP of Vibrant CGC, Certified St. John's Ambulance Therapy Dog Troy finished up his UKC Championship in July with a Group Second and two Group Fourth placements. He also successfully passed his Canine Good Citizen test at PCA in April and his St. John's Ambulance Therapy Dog test in May. He is now making regular visits to a local nursing home where he is eagerly received by his elderly friends. Next on Troy's agenda is to finish his Pre-Novice Title, make his debut in Rally Novice and work toward his Working Certificate. Troy's training partner is Vivienne Swarbreck, Vibrant Poodles.

Torin is my first standard poodle, bred by Diane Welsh, and my first conformation champion, handled beautifully by Ken and Jacquie Fargey. He is a lovely boy to train and work with, and a great example of an “All Round” poodle – he is happy to join you in whatever you have planned. Right now, Torin is training in obedience, agility and rally – approaching each performance venue with equal parts enthusiasm, collaboration and humor.

Torin lives in Mississauga with a miniature schnauzer named Emma, and when he’s not training, Torin loves to play with his bumper, go for his daily hikes and dreams of a world without hemostats.
