Sidewalk chalk has become a summertime classic for kids of all ages. This DIY version adds an extra element of fun by incorporating squeeze bottles to achieve all kinds of messy results. Plus there’s an extra surprise at the end, too!

To make your own squirtable sidewalk chalk you’ll need:

• squeezable plastic bottles (we found ours at our local craft store in the tie-dye section)

• white vinegar • baking soda • cornstarch • funnel • food coloring

Fill each bottle about 2/3 of the way full with equal parts baking soda and cornstarch. This part can be tricky, so use a funnel to make it easier. If you don’t have a funnel, or the opening isn’t wide enough, roll up a piece of paper and use it as a makeshift funnel.

Fill the rest of the bottle with water and add food coloring. Then secure the top and carefully shake. Fill your last bottle only with white vinegar.

Take your sidewalk chalk paint outside and scope out a good canvas on the driveway or sidewalk. Then hand the bottles over to the kids and tell them to start squirting.

Layering the colors makes a pretty picture and is a great opportunity to watch the hues blend while discussing color theory with the kids.

Once the kids have gotten their fill of painting with the chalk, hand over the bottle of vinegar to add a twist to the activity. The baking soda in the paints will react with the vinegar to create foam.

After 10 or 15 minutes, the hot sun will dry your paints and you’ll have a chalk masterpiece.
