summer in the city
DESCRIPTION
A story about longing for love, inspired by the song "Summer in the City" by Regina SpektorTRANSCRIPT
THECITY
It’s growing into summer and the sun is rising sooner now.
4 it creeps through the blinds just a few minutes before I open my eyes. For two weeks there’s been nothing but blankets and sheets beside me. A ghost of your curled hair cascading down a bare shoulder.
6 You left for work with a soft kiss on the cheek and I walked you to the car. We’d keep in touch. Call every few days, talk online and visit when we had the time. The truth was we didn’t really know each other. We just went with the days that fol-lowed and accepted the comfort that each of us had found.
8 It felt like love. Well, love without the fear of losing. Maybe that’s why we didn’t take it seriously. There was nothing to fear in those few weeks. Nothing was sacred, so nothing could be ruined. Neither of us asked or wondered what was ahead. Taking the days and nights as they came. And each night managed to see us together.
10 There wasn’t even a parting since there was never anything between us. Just a smile, a light kiss and a hug. Neither thought of it more or less. Just a com-fortable meeting, a casual partnership. An unspoken agree-ment of general happiness that was bound to end in a quick and uneventful goodbye.
12But as I moved through the days, spending weekends at the beach, evenings at the grill, I began to check my phone more fervently, trying to come up with something to send, some excuse to know I was on your mind.
14 I went out to meet strangers but ended up speaking of you, seeing you in their faces.
16 I’ve been floaTing through the bare apartment in pajamas and slippers. Throw-ing vegetables in a pot for the stew I will share with myself. Waiting for a hand to rest on my shoulder, an embrace to encircle my waist, but a ringing phone is the closest that I have come to hope for.
18 As I’m sitting on a large tan couch, I am dreaming of you next to me again. Nothing promised, nothing said. Some-thing too simple to appreciate, to easy to be love.
20 It’s growing into summer and I’m wishing you were here again.
