The Improvement Science Summit is the official conference of the Improvement Science Research Network (ISRN). The curriculum of the Summer Institute on EBP is organized around the ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation (Stevens, 2004). The model depicts relationships between various forms of knowledge, as newly discovered research evidence is moved through several stages and into practice. This model is easily communicated and clearly conveys the essence of evidence-

based practice. It melds into a whole, established concepts and new concepts of improving care, providing a framework for systematically putting EBP processes into operation.

Configured as a simple 5-point star, the model illustrates five major stages of knowledge transformation: 1) discovery research, 2) evidence summary, 3) translation to guidelines, 4) practice integration, 5) process, outcome evaluation. Evidence-based processes and methods vary from one point of the star to the next. The ACE Star Model places previous scientific work on research utilization within the context of EBP and serves as an organizer for examining and applying EBP.

The model is developed through the Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice (ACE). ACE was established as a center of excellence for UT Health Science Center San Antonio School of Nursing in January 2000. It is dedicated to bridging research into practice. The goal of ACE is to improve healthcare and patient outcomes through evidence-based practice, research, and education. This work is done through collaboration with other evidence-based practice entities within the UT Health Science Center Clinical and Translational Science Program.

• Participation in the Student Program implies that students will comment on their experiences in writing for the purpose of program evaluation; information will be provided anonymously and reported only in aggregate.

Nursing contact hours have been applied for through the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Accreditation

UT Health Science Center Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice reserves the right to limit enrollment or to cancel any course no less than one week prior to the activity. Should circumstances make this necessary, only registered attendees will be informed. In this event, tuition would be refunded in full.
