Improvement Science SummitImprovement Science Summit A Research Methods Conference

This unique specialty research methods conference builds the science foundation for improving healthcare. Experience a full immersion in the latest advances in healthcare improvement research at the 4th Annual Improvement Science Summit.

The Improvement Science Summit is the official conference of the Improvement Science Research Network (ISRN). Philosophically aligned with the NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) and dissemination and implementation programs, the goals of the ISRN are to accelerate improvement by conducting interprofessional landmark multi-site studies and to enhance translation of research findings into healthcare.

Transforming healthcare through quality improvement and patient safety initiatives is a national priority. Join us for this innovative 1 ½ day conference focused on advancing healthcare improvement.

1. Researchers who seek to conduct improvement studies in a national research network, quality improvement and patient safety professionals, academic scientists and educators.

2. Magnet coordinators responsible for conducting research, quality improvement specialists, patient safety officers, and hospital administrators.

3. Healthcare program evaluators, academic-practice partners in translational science, change champions, and clinicians across various disciplines who evaluate impact of change.

July 9-10, 2013 - Transformation through ResearchOverview

Objectives

9:15 – 9:45 Research Across the Nation:Attended Poster Presentations and Exhibits

9:45 – 10:50 Evaluating Complex Quality Improvement Studies: Challenges, Solutions and Practical GuidanceIt is difficult to validate that an improvement change really does improve care and outcomes. When the change is a complex quality and safety improvement (CQSI), involving many changes, the challenge is greater for researchers and improvers. This presentation gives examples of different CQSI changes in one unit, and across a hospital, and of large scale programs and the research methods used in studies to evaluate them.

10:50 – 11:50 Writing Successful Dissemination and Implementation GrantsResearchers constantly seek funding to conduct research; however, it is a difficult challenge to prepare a high-quality proposal which demonstrates the capacity to conduct the proposed study. Learn about the important ingredients that are needed to make grant proposals successful.

Summer InstituteSummer Institute on Evidence-Based Practice

July 11-13, 2013 - From Knowing to Doing

In its 12th year, this Institute builds capacity for healthcare providers to actively shape the future of quality and safety in healthcare through translating evidence into practice. Join frontline leaders, midlevel managers, top directors, educators, and scientists from multiple disciplines to share information on informing improvement with evidence, employing improvement strategies, and leading improvement at every level. Because frontline and evidence are powerful drivers in building quality and safety, we look at ‘what it takes’ to move healthcare to a high level of quality and safety. In each discussion, effective strategies are underscored with evidence. Take home expert advice on cutting edge approaches that leverage evidence, organizational climate, and clinician vitality. This all-new conference explores best approaches to accelerate change and adoption with actionable information.

1. Clinicians, nurses, physicians, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, librarians, all health professionals who wish to use evidence in practice.

2. Researchers who develop healthcare science in various disciplines.

3. Educators who prepare health professionals including nurses, physicians, pharmacists, dentists, and all health clinicians for implementing quality care.

4. Administrators and managers who shape healthcare services through improvement innovation.

Overview

Objectives

1. Analyze successful improvement strategies in terms of underlying evidence, principles, and resulting impact on excellence.

2. Develop strategies to hasten adoption of improvement strategies using evidence-based and newly created improvement resources.

3. Balance complex demands of accelerating adoption of change, system realities, and care provider individual capacity.

4. Apply evidence such as systematic reviews, clinical practice guidelines, and EBP toolkits, for evidence-based quality improvement safety.

5. Acquire competencies needed in the healthcare workforce for expanded roles in evidence-based safety and quality improvement.

6. Design a plan to evaluate impact of evidence-based practice on patient safety and outcomes in priority health issues.

“Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.” - Goethe

Our Slogan: “…to the best of our knowledge”

The curriculum of the Summer Institute on EBP is organized around the ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation (Stevens, 2004). The model depicts relationships between various forms of knowledge, as newly discovered research evidence is moved through several stages and into practice. This model is easily communicated and clearly conveys the essence of evidence-

based practice. It melds into a whole, established concepts and new concepts of improving care, providing a framework for systematically putting EBP processes into operation.

Configured as a simple 5-point star, the model illustrates five major stages of knowledge transformation: 1) discovery research, 2) evidence summary, 3) translation to guidelines, 4) practice integration, 5) process, outcome evaluation. Evidence-based processes and methods vary from one point of the star to the next. The ACE Star Model places previous scientific work on research utilization within the context of EBP and serves as an organizer for examining and applying EBP.

The model is developed through the Academic Center for Evidence-Based Practice (ACE). ACE was established as a center of excellence for UT Health Science Center San Antonio School of Nursing in January 2000. It is dedicated to bridging research into practice. The goal of ACE is to improve healthcare and patient outcomes through evidence-based practice, research, and education. This work is done through collaboration with other evidence-based practice entities within the UT Health Science Center Clinical and Translational Science Program.

The primary goal of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Interdisciplinary Nursing Quality Research Initiative (INQRI) is to generate, disseminate and translate research to understand how nurses contribute to and can improve the quality of patient care. The program, led by Mary Naylor, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Mark Pauly, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania, in partnership with Lori Melichar, PhD, and her colleagues at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, supports interdisciplinary teams of nurse scholars and scholars from other disciplines to address the gaps in knowledge about the relationship between nursing and health care quality.
