Legacy Health is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt corporation with an integrated network of healthcare services––acute and critical care, inpatient and outpatient treatment, community health education and a variety of specialty services. Legacy consists of six hospitals, including a children’s hospital, dozens of primary care and specialty clinics, a regional medical laboratory service, a research facility, hospice and other components of a complete health system. This year, Legacy is pleased to offer ten paid Administrative Summer Internships! These internships are intended to supplement a student’s academic achievements with real-work experiences. Each of the following areas will be offering internships in the summer of 2010. - Process Improvement - Marketing and Business Development - Patient Care & Customer Service - Human Resources - Finance For specific Internship descriptions & requirements, please see other side of this flyer. - Internship positions are offered at an hourly rate of $11/hour for undergrad students and $12/hour for graduate students. - Internships last approximately 10 weeks. - Eligible candidates: Senior level or higher undergraduate and graduate level students. Process ImprovementLean - Corporate Office: The intern will utilize the concepts developed by Toyota to participate as a team member in a Lean process improvement project/s within the hospital system. The selected intern will participate as a team member in a Lean process improvement project(s) within the hospital system. This internship will include process mapping, spaghetti charting, waste analysis, 5S Evaluation, Metric Development, and Process Documentation.

Hospital Support Services - Emanuel Medical Center: This intern will work to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Emanuel Medical Center’s linen and laundry services. This intern will observe the current linen and laundry processes and identify sources of inefficiency or waste. The intern will also benchmark current linen utilization and identify healthcare best practices for linen processing. Results and recommendations will be provided to the Emanuel Medical Center Director of Clinical and Support Services.

Volunteer Services - Mount Hood Medical Center: This intern will work on projects enhancing how volunteer services are utilized within the hospital. The primary project will involve partnership with an inpatient unit and applying process improvement principles (Lean) in re-defining the scope and processes of volunteers in this area. The secondary project will be to review and enhance the current on-boarding process of volunteers. Students with an understanding of hospital operations, process improvement, and/or employee engagement are encouraged to apply.

Marketing and Business DevelopmentStrategic Planning and Business Development - Corporate Office: Business Development works with the Legacy leadership and physician leaders to set and achieve the growth goals for assigned hospitals and service lines. This internship will provide an opportunity to work collaboratively with a Sr. staff member to develop the background materials to support Legacy’s strategic planning efforts. This may include development of library of electronic maps to be used in presentation and analyses, data gathering and market share analysis. This person will be responsible for data mining and analysis; students with a solid statistical background are encouraged to apply.

Marketing and Web Development - Corporate Office: The intern will experience and contribute to a broad array of marketing projects in a healthcare environment. Potential tasks include event coordination, providing support for a direct mail implementation, participating in social media implementation and web site evaluation and enhancement. The intern may also have limited exposure to internal consulting with other departments within Legacy.

Physician Satisfaction - Corporate Office: Develop and administer a survey to local Primary Care Physicians to measure and

improve physician satisfaction with the hospitalist service. This project will focus on gaining a better understanding of how Legacy’s programs are currently viewed, identifying key drivers of physician satisfaction and providing recommendations for how current processes might be improved. Results and recommendations to be presented to Legacy Internal Medicine Services leadership.

Patient Care & Customer ServiceVolunteer Services - Salmon Creek Medical Center:The intern will be responsible for the facilitation and development of the summer junior volunteer program. The intern will interview, train, place, supervise, document, and recognize junior volunteers (high school aged volunteers). The placement of these volunteers will be from mid-June to September 3rd. A basic understanding of HR, volunteer services, training, and/or hospital operations may be helpful, but a desire to work with/guide junior volunteers is a must!

Hip Fracture Clinic - NW Portland: The Hip Fracture Service is both a patient care and research program within Legacy, developed to improve the care and coordination of geriatric patients who present with an acute hip fracture. The intern’s role in this project would be to assist in follow-up calls to patients once they are discharged from the hospital. Information tracked includes multiple outcome measures at 30 days, 60 days, 3 months, and 6 months post-discharge from the hospital. The intern may also have limited participation in daily rounds with the Hip FractureService team.

Human Resources

Human Resources - Corporate Office: The intern will work primarily with Human Resources in 2 areas: Diversity initiative and in Organizational Development. The work with the diversity initiative will be to support the various aspects of launching the diversity framework and initiatives, such as preparation for taskforce meetings, reviewing and summarizing articles, researching best practices, developing a method to inventory and track progress. The intern will also help support a major change management initiative relating to Legacy’s conversion to an electronic medical records system; specific work may include conducting interviews, initiating readiness assessments and compiling results. Additional projects may include work updating a Leadership Development Resource Guide and cataloging Lean activities across the system.

FinanceReimbursement - Corporate Office: The intern will gain a unique opportunity to learn about Medicare and Medicaid Reimbursement, an area within our Finance department. There will be special projects related to cost reporting, which includes financial and data analysis. You will also have an opportunity to work with accounting, finance, and billing. This intern will need a finance/accounting background.
