GATA Student Campus Addition Project

TED University Expansion Project

At the first stage of my summer practice, I worked at the construction site of GATA. In the campus, there was two structure. One of them was the dorm building for students of the campus and the other one was the library building.

So, I observed two different construction and saw different works on them because of the construction sequences of the buildings.

At the second stage of my summer practice, I worked at the construction site of TED Uni-versity which I study at already. This was an expansion project of campus. In the construc-tion site there were two structure which already existed and three newly builted structures. So, I saw different kind of works like restoration and concreting in one construction site.

GATA Student Campus Project Stu-dent Dorm Addition

First structure in the construction site is the dorm building for the students of campus. It’s a basic structure was almost done. So, I had a chance to see the fine structure with this building besides some progressing works like stucco, installing plumbing and etc. during my summer practice.

2The other structure in the construction site is the library building. When we compare to the dorm building, this li-brary at the fist stages of the construction. Fundemental structure of the building has completed when I started to summer practice. So, I had a chance to see production of the interior walls with bricks and etc.

Also, I had a chance to see roof structure.

FIRST WEEK | GATA | FRONT OF DORM BUILDING

10 June 2015

First days, I was asked to analyze plans of the buildings and they didn’t let me see the site at first. Today I went to the construc-tion site after two days with researches about the site.

First thing I observed was that the rainwater fall pipes.

At the begin-ning, I observed the front of the dorm building. This survey was completely soil and needed to be digged with the excavator in order to place the rainwater fall pipes.

After soil was digged with exca-vator, the rainwater fall pipes were placed to the holes were opened.

Then the find sand was spilled to top of the rainwater fall pipes in order to mark them. In this way, when another excavation work happened again, people can recog-nize that there are something at that survey.

Page 6: Summer Practice Report 2015

FIRST WEEK | GATA | FRONT OF DORM BUILDING

Flattened surfaces were created at places which were not digged. After that straightness of the survey was checked with a device which called nivo. (levelling instru-ment)

12 June 2015 Nivo was placed to a soil sur-face which defined as zero elevation and it was arranged until get a clear image. We needed to see the numbers of the ruler which was holded by someone in front of the nivo. After the image was im-mobilized, nivo was taken to another part of the survey and with the help of it el-evations were calculated by comparison to the zero point which was calculated in the first place.

While numbers which was calculated are decreasing, level of the surface are in-creasing oppositely.

There should be level difference at the surface in order to provide water flow in the rainwater fall pipes.

Today, measurements were made with Today, measurements were made with nivo one by one and after checking the slope on the surface. excavation was started. At the same time, rainwater fall pipes were placed where the holes which were opened.

FIRST WEEK | GATA | LIBRARY BUILDING

12 June 2015

Another device which called laser was used in the library building. It was so similar to nivo actually. We need to place the device somewhere we de-fined zero point like we did with nivo. Differently from nivo this device sended lasers to an another tool of laser device and by putting this tool to different points we can understand level difference between start point.

Points which were made by lasers were marked and level differences were checked on the ground floor of the library. There was no clear mis-take on the ground according to calculations.

Basic structure of library has comleted before I started to summer practice here. So, I ob-served stages after that.

SECOND WEEK | GATA | INSIDE OF THE DORM

Today, I observed inside of the dorm. It’s a long linear and symmetri-cal building. There is a gallery gap at the middle of the building and behind the gallery gap there is a part which includes staircases.

At the bottom floors of the building, basic works are mostly completed. However, top floors of the building has more work to do.

Whole building has a design which includes ceiling floors. Whole cablo systems like electric and also fire pipes are hiding in these ceiling floors.

SECOND WEEK | GATA | LIBRARY

Roofing were progressing in a disorganized way because of the fact that construction should be completed in a short time period. Workers were trying to be as fast as they can.

While wooden beams were carriyng, steel columns were came. These steel columns weren’t related with the structure of the li-brary. They used be-cause of the view only.

Roofing was started.

Wooden beams were carried to the top of the li-brary building with the crane.

SECOND WEEK | GATA | LIBRARY

17 June 2015

Today, steel coloums fi-nally started to be as-sembled to the outside of the library building.

At the same time, bricks were moved into the library in order to start putting up interior walls.

Also, roofing were conAlso, roofing were con-tinuing with wooden beams at the top of the library building.

SECOND WEEK | GATA | LIBRARY

In these photos there are steel coloums which I mentioned and like I mentioned before, these steel columns are needed just for visual quality.

These steel columns were placed as six pieces at the front side of the library and the other six pieces at the back side of the library by the help of the cranes.

After that, workers immobilized them to the conAfter that, workers immobilized them to the con-crete walls of the library by welding.

SECOND WEEK | GATA | INSIDE OF THE DORM

Dilatation Gap

There is a gap in the dorm building and this gap provides strength to the building in somewhow. Be-cause of this building is a long and linear building, at the time of earthquake there can be some fractures. So, this dilatation gap seperates the building into two pieces in somehow and prevents the building from de-molishing with a whole.

Tile floor

Prepared mortar was spilled to the ground and juice was spilled above the mortar. This juice ensured that ceramics get sticked. After spilling juice, ceramics were placed one by one and they were left to dry.

At the toilets, ceiling floors started to be assemled. At the be-ginning, steel shapes were assembled and ceiling floors which were made up with gypsum panels were attached to these steel shapes.

SECOND WEEK | GATA | LIBRARY

Today, staircases where next to the li-brary started to be builted.

Previosly, shape of the staircases has builted but steps of them has not shaped yet.

With this machine in the left image is a machine which helps to carry the mortar materials like sand, cement and these kinds of mixtures to the high levels of the buildings.

SECOND WEEK | GATA | ROOF OF THE LIBRARY

Roofing

Wooden beams and mortar mixtures has moved to the roof of the library in the previous days like I mentioned. And while they were carrying at the same time roofing also has started.

So, when I went up to the roof, first and second stage of the So, when I went up to the roof, first and second stage of the roof which has three steps has completed. So, I observed the last stage of the roof completely.

18 June 2015

Page 15: Summer Practice Report 2015

SECOND WEEK | GATA | ROOF OF THE LIBRARY

The roof the library has three stages. These three stages are different than each others. That’s why at this part of my report, I added some skecthes of the roof stages.

This sketch is second stage of the roof. I mean the roof which was placed at the middle. It has fragmented struc-ture by comparing to the others.

K-L axis has a straight structure and it’s the third stage. I mean the roof at the lowest level. I oberved this stage’s roofing progress completely.

G-H axises has a classical roof structure which has a trian-gle look.

SECOND WEEK | GATA | ROOF OF THE LIBRARY

Roofing

At the first stage, wooden shapes were builted accord-ing to the shapes which were defined in the project like I mentioned before. This shape of roof was formed with only wooden beams.

After that shapes were builted, roof isolation will be made and as final work whole roof will be covered with plate.

While roofing were continuing gaps between concerete coloums at the roof were closing down by putting up walls with bricks.

SECOND WEEK | GATA | FRONT OF THE DORM

Side was straightened at the front of the dorm building.

Some squarish stone blocks Some squarish stone blocks were placed at the specific points in order to provide plumbing. Circular shapes on the stone blocks were broke acoording to the direction of pipes which will be put.

Pipes will be connected to Pipes will be connected to each others with these stone blocks.

Specific areas which defined before according to the project were digged in order to put electrical wiring.

SECOND WEEK | GATA | ROOF OF THE DORM

At the roof of the dorm we had some calculations about the iron additions for the wooden beams at the roof shape in order to make more stabil them.

Shapes of these iron additions were defined in the project we just measured the wooden beams and checked if there was a mistake. According to our calculation we order these iron additions. I added some sketches also about these calculation on the left image.

THIRD WEEK | GATA | INSIDE OF THE LIBRARY

22 June 2015

Today, interior walls were put with bricks. Also walls were put in order to closing down the gaps between the basic structure columns of the building.

Also, plastering was started on the concrete walls. The main Also, plastering was started on the concrete walls. The main purpose of the plastering is closing the holes which caused by pouring concrete. While pouring concrete there can become some holes on the wall in spite of using vibrator. So, plaster can close down these holes.

This image is a view of the inside of the library.

Page 20: Summer Practice Report 2015

THIRD WEEK | GATA | THE DORM BUILDING

In the toilets sink shapes were made with steel shapes. After that, sinks were placed to these shapes. Ceiling floors of toilets at every floor were almost com-pleted.

On the other hand pipes were assembled to stone blocks in order to provide plumbing like I mentioned before.

Ceiling floors which are cover the top of every floor in the building were almost completed. Some systems should stay in the ceiling floors like electrical wiring, fire pipes and etc. were assembled and ceiling floors were started to closing down.

THIRD WEEK | GATA | GENERAL LOOK TO THE SITE

24 June 2015In this project there were many staircases which have same form in different places of the site. Staircases which I marked on the plan with pink circles has completed. Two of them which I marked with blue circles are not started to built yet and three of them which I marked with yellow circles are now builting.

All staircases have same form like in this image on the left.

Page 22: Summer Practice Report 2015

THIRD WEEK | GATA | OUTSIDE OF THE LIBRARY

24 June 2015Staircases

First of all, reinforcement was made with iron sticks. This reinforcement shaped the slope of the side at the bottom part of the staircases.

After that, wooden mould was built on the reinforcement in order to im-mobilize the concrete while it was pouring. After pouring concrete, it was left to dry and than wooden mould was removed.

Page 23: Summer Practice Report 2015

THIRD WEEK | GATA | FRONT OF THE DORM

At the front of the dorm, measurements were performed for the parking area. So, nivo was used again for this measure-ments. This time, areas which was specified were marked with ropes and chalk powder. Also, iron sticks were placed to some impor-tant points in order to clarify borders.

Wooden moulds were placed to certain areas in order to built partitions to the borders of the area. Concrete will be poured in these wooden moulds. So, in the construction site there are many areas are waiting for pouring concrete.

24 June 2015

Page 24: Summer Practice Report 2015

THIRD WEEK | GATA | INSIDE OF THE LIBRARY

24 June 2015

At the inside of the library some measurements were persome measurements were per-formed with water gage. Working principle of the water gage is so simple. When we hold the water gage to a surface, little piece in the water should be at the middle of the lines on the water gage. If it’s not, the surface we hold the it’s not, the surface we hold the water gage to, is not straigth.

On the other hand, wooden moulds were placed on the interior walls at the inside of the library in the past days and concrete was poured in them. Today those wooden moulds were removed.

TEDU University Expansion Project Campus Addition

There are three old constructions in the construction site. These buildings can not be demolished because of their ages. So, these buildings are restorating during my summer practice. These three buildings are called F - G - H Blocks in my summer practice report.

1

2There are also new constructions in the construction site. These three building designed as vintange in spite of being new builted structures in order to make har-mony with the other buildings. These three buildings are called C - D - E Blocks. D Block is seperating to two part as D1 and D2. Also, C block is basement and during my summer practice there were no work there.

Page 28: Summer Practice Report 2015

FIRST WEEK | TEDU | G - E BLOCKS

21 July 2015

Than, we observed E block. Outside of the building, there was a rail system. Stone wool which was the yellow one in the image on top was placed on the wall after that there was isolation tape which was the blue one in the image. At the outmost travertines were placed outside of the wall as housepaint.

First day, we saw all construction site and ob-serve.

First we went to G block. There was blind casings and also steel shapes for doors and windows. There is also ceiling floors here like the ones at GATA but they have different design. Design of the project is vintage in order to pro-vide harmony with existing structure which are restorationing.

Page 29: Summer Practice Report 2015

FIRST WEEK | TEDU | E - H BLOCKS

22 July 2015

In the H block’s ground floor, grids were made with wooden pieces in order to spill mosaics between them.

Grids had square shapes and mosaics should be spilled cross ingly on the square shapes because of the fact that otherwise mosaics can be cracked.

Railing of the staircase at the H block was too long. That’s why we decided to cut it from the bottom in order to make it at normal size.

Electrical wiring and gypsum boards were assembled at the activity field of E block. Also, second plaster was spilled to the walls in order to straight-en the wall.

Page 30: Summer Practice Report 2015

FIRST WEEK | TEDU | IN FRONT OF THE E BLOCK

22 July 2015

Today, we used a device which called Total Station Leica. Information about the site was uploaded on this device beforehand than, after arranging it, the device send lasers on some points on the site according to in-formation in it.

We marked We marked those points and defined the area in order to built a ramp in front of the E block. Iron sticks were placed at points placed at points which lasers showed.

Page 32: Summer Practice Report 2015

FIRST WEEK | TEDU | H BLOCK

23 July 2015

All railings’ bottom parts were cut because of they were too long and all railings were placed in the H block. Because, a mistake has made while measuring them before and they were not on the right high.

Mosaics were continuing to be spilled at the H block’s ground floor. Mosaic stones were mixing with cement and this mixture were spilled to the square ares which were made with wooden sticks yesterday. It was very interesting experiment for me to see how mosaics we see everyday are made.

Page 33: Summer Practice Report 2015

FIRST WEEK | TEDU | G - D2 BLOCK

24 July 2015

Gas concretes were mostly used at the D2 block in order to built walls in this project.

Mosaics were continuing to be spilled at G block.

After mosaics dried, land was straightened with diamond tool.

Page 34: Summer Practice Report 2015

SECOND WEEK | TEDU | D1 BLOCK

Wooden moulds were builted around the reinforcement which was made up from iron sticks are getting together with wires at D1 block. Concrete is enduring against comprassion but not enduring with tension.

Reiforcement which was made up from iron sticks is enduring for tension in opposite way with concrete. That’s why concrete walls includes rein-forcement in itself. Wooden moulds were builted around these iron sticks and than concrete was poured in these moulds.

27 July 2015

Page 35: Summer Practice Report 2015

SECOND WEEK | TEDU | D2 BLOCK

Today, I oberved putting up a wall with gas concretes at D2 block. The reason of using gas concrete is mostly that gas concrete can provide iso-lation. Also, it’s scale different than brick so it’s more suitable than bricks for this project in most areas. Of course, there are also some areas which were putted up walls with bricks.Fisrtly, according to the project points were marked with rope and mixture of sand and cement were spilled to the ground. After that gas concretes were placed on these mixtures carefully and they were checked with water gage one by one.

27 July 2015

Page 36: Summer Practice Report 2015

SECOND WEEK | TEDU | F BLOCK

28 July 2015

I observed today inside and the roof part of F block. Plaster was spilled walls of ground floor.

At the roof of F block, roofing has started a few days ago. On the contrary to GATA, here roofing was builting with steel beams.

Basic shape was builted with steel beams and also, it was covered by steel beams.

Page 37: Summer Practice Report 2015

SECOND WEEK | TEDU | G - D2 BLOCK

28 July 2015

Landscape working was started in front of the G block. Section drawings were analyzed, the side was cleaned and concrete was poured.

Measurements were performed with the help of nivo at the garden of G block.

I added here image of the view that we see when we look at wall from nivo. That red triangle on the wall and we see that with nivo like in that image.

At the same time, putting up wall progress were continuing at D1 block.

According to the project some walls were builted with gas concrete and some of them were builted with bricks.

Especially, walls of classes were builted with gas concretes because of the isolation.

Page 38: Summer Practice Report 2015

SECOND WEEK | TEDU | IN FRONT OF E BLOCK

29 July 2015

Ramp was started to be builted in the area which we specify with total station before in front of the E block. According to th points which were defined, wooden moulds were placed and they were marked inside in order to recognize the slope which ramp should have.

Wooden sticks were sticked to those spesific points in order to provide slop while concrete were pouring.

Page 39: Summer Practice Report 2015

SECOND WEEK | TEDU | IN FRONT OF G BLOCK

30 July 2015

Andesites were started to placed at garden of the G block.

First, specific points were marked with rope on concrete surface.

After that, mixture of sand and cement was spilled and syrup was spilled on them.

Finally, andesites were put on top of those mixtures and they were checked with again water gage.

Page 40: Summer Practice Report 2015

FIRST WEEK | TEDU | IN FRONT OF G BLOCK

31 July 2015

While andesites were placing on the garden of G block, at the same time some areas which defined before were digged at the Ziya Gökalp Entrance.

Wooden moulds were builted on that holes and the entrance was started to shape.

After that concrete was poured in these wooden moulds and left to dry.

Page 41: Summer Practice Report 2015

THIRD WEEK | TEDU | IN FRONT OF THE G BLOCK

03 August 2015First wooden moulds were removed after pouring concrete. Today different wooden moulds were builted again and this time, iron sticks were placed inside of it in order to stabilize the structure.

While wooden moulds were placing, andesites were also continuing to be placed.

THIRD WEEK | TEDU | E BLOCK

04 August 2015

At the pool floor, working has almost done. Girders were covered with gypsum and painted.

After those works, pool will be cleaned from all the debris around them. Pool work was almost done.

Page 43: Summer Practice Report 2015

THIRD WEEK | TEDU | D2 - G BLOCK

04 August 2015A staircase was started to be built at the area between D2 block and G block.

There is level difference be-tween these two blocks. That’s why, a staircase was needed here.

Reinforcement which was made up from iron sticks were placed at the bottom and wooden moulds were placed on it in order to shape staircase.

Finally, concrete was poured Finally, concrete was poured in these moulds anf left to dry.

Different type of andesites were placed at garden of G block.

THIRD WEEK | TEDU | H BLOCK

06 August 2015

Electrical wiring were assembled into the ceiling floor like they did at GATA Construc-tion Site. Whole system are hiding into the ceilinf floor.

Areas which mosaics were spilled were straightened with diamond tool. By turning this tool to left and right repeatedly, this tool can straighten the area under itself.

On the other hand plaster were spilled to the walls and after that walls were started to be painted.
