2020 Calendar of Events

AUGUST 5th - Twins Contest - 6:00 pm at the Music Pier. Registration starts at 5:30 pm.

6th - Sand Sculpting Contest - 9:00 am at the 6th Street Beach.

11th - Pamper Scamper - Annual baby crawling race. 8:30 am registration, 9:00 am start at 6th Street Beach. For babies up to 15 months.

13th – 111th Annual Baby Parade – One of the oldest baby parades in the country. On the Boardwalk, 10:30 am. - 6th – 12th Streets.

19th - Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant & Hermit Crab Races - 6:00 pm at the 6th Street Beach. Registration is free and starts at 5:30 pm.

SEPTEMBER 12th - Street Rod - Features classics cars on the boardwalk from 12noon-4pm. 19th – Ocean City Airport Festival - Display of airplanes from WW II to Classics and Warbirds - Municipal Airport, 26th & Bay Ave. 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.

19th - Parachute Pyrotechnic Show - Team Fastrax flies in formation with lighted pyro-technics above the beach and boardwalk. 8:00 pm jump with a landing on the 7th street beach.

20th – Boardwalk Aerobatic Airshow – Thrill to some of the best stunt pilots and aero-

batic champions in the world - 6th to 14th St. over the ocean. 1:00 pm.

2020 Calendar of Events

APRIL 4th - OC CON Super Hero 1 Mile Run & Obstacle Dash - 9am Race start at Carey Stadium (6th St. & Atlantic Ave.) 12th - Doo Dah Parade - Parade starts at 12 noon. Welcome Spring with this comedy parade complete with over 300 basset hounds. Parade runs from 6th-12th Streets on Asbury Ave. and then up to the boardwalk ending at 6th & Board-walk 25th - Sports Memorabilia Show - Shop vendors for collectables and memo-rabilia. Special guest TBD. Doors open 10am-4pm at the Ocean City Music Pier. MAY 9th - Martin Z. Mollusk Day - 11am at 9th St. beach; Find out if summer is coming early! 9th - Jackie Evancho in Concert with OC POPS Orchestra - 7:30pm at the Ocean City Music Pier.

JUNE 4th –Wonder’s Birthday Bash at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier - 6 pm –10:30 pm. 28th - Ocean City POPS Orchestra Opening Night - Officially opening their 92nd Sea-son at the Ocean City Music Pier. Concert begins at 7:30pm.

JULY 4th - Bike Parade - Registration 9:00 am, parade begins at 10:00 am. Longport Bridge Parking Lot and 40th & Asbury Avenue.

4th – Fourth of July Celebration – Kite flying competition at 7:00 pm followed by enter-tainment. A spectacular fireworks display tops off the evening at 9 pm on the beach next to the Music Pier.

2nd - Sand Sculpting Contest - 9:00 am at the 6th st. Beach.

8th - Freckle Contest - 6:00 pm at the Music Pier. Registration starts at 5:30 pm

18th – Night in Venice – The City’s annual boat parade is one of the largest in the world. Starts at the Longport Bridge to Tennessee Ave. along the bay.

RECREATION PROGRAMS REGISTRATION

Online & In Person registration for activities will start May 1st at 9:00 am

6th & Boardwalk Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm & Aquatic & Fitness Center - 1735 Simpson Ave. Monday - Sunday

(unless otherwise noted).

REGISTRATION POLICY

All registration for activities are handled on a first come, first serve basis for residents and seasonal vacationers. Program announcements will be distributed

through schools and at www.ocnj.us/recreation.

Any program requiring a deadline for registration will be noted on the program information flyer. A waiting list will be maintained for some

programs. If an opening becomes available in a closed program that space will be offered to the first person on the waiting list.

The Ocean City Community Services Department and the Division of Recreation Programs reserves the right to cancel or make changes

to any program due to lack of registration, inclement weather or reasons beyond our control. Programs, dates and times

are subject to change due to availability of facilities. Program cancellation due to inclement weather will be posted on-line at

www.ocnj.us/recreation or call (609) 525-9304.

The Division of Recreation insists that a child should never be left at an activity or program before the

person in charge arrives to accept responsibility for that participant. It is the obligation of the parent or guardian to be

aware of program schedule and times.

Acceptable methods of payment: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, cash or checks payable to: “City of Ocean City.” For more

information on programs listed call the Recreation Office at 609-525-9304.

REFUND POLICY Refunds will be approved only if the activity is cancelled or for medical reasons. A Doctor’s note is required (3) business days

before the start of the program. NO other refunds will be given.

Beach accessible wheelchairs for mobility/limited individuals of all ages. “Surf Chairs” can provide an

opportunity for everyone to enjoy the surf and sand.

FITNESS/DANCE CLASS This class is a dance based and high energy conditioning fitness class. This class is designed to maintain strength and flexibility conditioning as a vital portion that is necessary in practicing safe tumbling while also providing students with a strong

The Skateboard Park is located between 5th - 6th street on Asbury Ave. and is open year round 7 days a week,

weather permitting.

Protective gear including helmet, knee pads and elbow pads must be worn by all skaters.

WATER EXERCISE A variety of classes that are held daily.These classes are designed

to increase flexibility, circulation and muscle tone, along with building your cardiovascular endurance. The water is used as

resistance, which places less stress on the joints. Some classes utilize equipment along with exercises on the wall.

The American Red Cross Learn to Swim program teaches youngsters to swim and be safe in, on and around water. We teach

5 progressive levels. Starting with Level I where the most (elementary) beginning swimming skills are taught, thru Level 5

The Center is a multi-faceted facility that encourages people of all ages and fitness levels to participate in programs that help to promote good

STRENGTH & CARDIO

The Fitness Center is open to members only during the Center’s hours of operation. The Weight Room consists of dumbbells and free weights. This area also has a Smith Machine, power rack and Olympic style plate loaded equipment. The Open Fitness Area has BodyMaster, Star Trac, and Hoist

strength training machines. There are also kettle bells and various other core stability engaging apparatus. Cardiovascular room has

treadmills, stairclimbers, upright and recumbent bikes, elliptical cross train-ers with private viewing screens and rowing machines with ergometers.

Offers fun and educational classes with an academic edge and workshops for

children! Various camps will include a workbook to keep, experiments (specific camps), hands-on activities and games. Campers

Beachin’ It Discover the wonders of our beaches. Learn about it’s shells, creatures and plants. Understand the important role of the barrier islands. Create beach crafts and do experiments on erosion. Friday will be a beach day exploring the north end of our island. Come and learn about our local habitat.

Crabby Catchers Learn the fundamentals of crabbing in southern NJ bays. Cast nets and traps to see how many crabs can be caught! Find out about the fabulous horseshoe crab and create a model of one. Learn about the white ghost crabs that scamper across our beaches. Go on a crabbing boat and catch some blue claws. Friday will be a beach day exploring the north end of our is-land. Come and learn about our local habitat!

June 29 - July 3

USA Enjoy a week of celebrating our country. Learn about it’s many symbols and watch the proper way to fold the flag. Make patriotic crafts like pop rockets and star-spangled slime. Try a patriotic flower experiment. Make and fly your very own kite. Create and enjoy a patriotic treat! Ways of Weather Campers will be introduced to the many forms of weather. Learn about the different types of clouds, and how they form into hurricanes. Create hurri-cane and tornado models. Make a rain gauge and a windsock. Enjoy a presentation from a meteorologist and learn how to give a weather report!

LEARN TO SAIL ON THE BAY

The Ocean City Sailing Foundation is offering sailing lessons to Juniors and Adults.

Classes are held at the Bayside Center, 520 Bay Ave., starting June 22 through August 22. Our OCSF mission is “to promote sailing to

youth and families in the Greater Ocean City area by providing safe, affordable sailing instruction and sailing opportunities.”

All instructors are US Sailing Level One Certified. Most classes have a student to instructor ratio of 4:1. Four half-day lessons cost is $300.

Family discounts are available. Private lessons are also available each day from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, cost is $200 for up to three students.

Youth students must be eight years of age and must be able to swim.

This is for the Birds + From cardinals in the backyard to herons along the bay, campers will learn all about birds. Learn how to use binoculars, how to identify different spe-cies of birds, and how special adaptations help for their survival. Dissect owl pellets to reveal the skeleton of their last meal. Journey to nearby parks to birdwatch. Make a birdfeeder and a birdhouse. Visit a bird rookery with a professional birder to watch many birds in various stages of bringing up their young.

Cool Chemistry What are matter, density, salinity, reactants, solutions, mixtures and solvents? What do pennies and toothpicks have to do with chemistry? Recreate Frankenstein’s hand, fizzy airbags and more in this exploration of science, matter and the senses.

July 13 - 17 Wonderous Wetlands+ Discover the unique habitat of the wetlands and the creatures that call it home. Learn the important role the wetlands play to keep our islands safe. Create a wetland model and experiment with the illustrious wetland muck. Learn about turtles, crabs, and other animals that live in our back bays. On Thursday visit the Cape May Point Lighthouse and walk the wetlands na-ture trail.

Beach Buildings+ From historic times to the present, there have been numerous buildings to keep people safe on the beach. Visit our local buildings, the Lifeguard sta-tion and the Lifesaving station and hear presentations about the various tools and times of the trade. Create your own lighthouse and boat. On Thursday visit the Cape May Point Lighthouse and nature trails.

Food Science Baking is chemistry in the kitchen! Campers will learn the basics of baking and following recipes to create yummy concoctions. Bakers will discover the im-portance of organizing ingredients and proper measuring and mixing techniques. Creativity will flow as the bakers decorate cookies and cakes with unique designs. And best of all, the creations will be taste tested and sent home to be shared. Boardwalk SCIENCE!+ Explore the wonderful world of force, motion, and energy and how they relate to many boardwalk attractions. Do various experiments to illustrate the way force, gravity and motion function. Develop domino structures and watch them tumble down. Construct mini amusement rides using K’nex and Legos. On Thursday, travel to the boardwalk to visit Jilly’s arcade, play a round at Golden Galleon Golf and ride on Pier 9 Go Karts.

July 27 - 31

The Real Pirates of the East Coast+ Ahoy Matey! Get ready to embark on a pirate’s journey. Create a pirate name, only after taking the pirate code. Learn about the lives of real pirates like Blackbeard, Sam Bellamy, and Anne Bonny. Make and eat hard tack and create a treasure chest. Find some hidden treasure and make many pirate crafts. On Thursday we venture to the Sea Dragon for a real voyage on the Great Egg Harbor Bay.

Got Backbone? This camp will increase the camper’s knowledge of animals, particularly comparing vertebrates with invertebrates. Create a model of the spine. Stretch and learn some basic yoga moves. Watch a fish get fileted and examine its spine and other components. Create a Japanese styled fish print. Enjoy a presentation where the campers will get to touch and hold several live animals!

August 3 - 7 A Bug’s Life Insects are fascinating creatures. Learn about insects, their life cycles and their amazing features. Create insect crafts. See how you compare to the remarka-ble features many insects possess. Watch a presentation from a local bee-keeper and try different kinds of honey. Enjoy a demonstration from a butterfly enthusiast and observe live monarch butterflies in each life cycle and observe them go from one life cycle to the next.

Slime, Goo, and Poison Too The title tells it all! Spend a week getting down and dirty in the world of toxicology of slime, goo and chemicals. Conduct experiments as you learn all about the importance of animal toxicology. Watch a presentation from a local beekeeper and try different kinds of honey. Enjoy a demonstration from a butterfly enthusiast and observe lie monarch butterflies in each life cycle and observe them go from one life cycle to the next.

August 10 - 14

National CSI (Maximum of 20 campers) This class is for students who have an interest in law enforcement or related forensic sciences. Students will learn general problem-solving skills and how physics, geometry, triangles and the Pythagorean theorem; simple algebraic math, sin/cosine problems relating to blood spatter and bullet trajectory, and other science disciplines assist in solving a crime scene. You will learn how to identify and then process a mock crime scene by collecting evidence using the most up-to-date modern techniques. Class is designed to be challenging while having fun solving the crime. Class is taught by retired Captain Sean Clancy formerly of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
