About the School of ArtsThe School of Arts was established in 1886, and today remains central to the Malverncampus of South Worcestershire College. We offer a contemporary programme enriched by the inclusion of the traditional Art and Crafts areas from our heritage. OurSummer School for adults is well-established, friendly and taught by professional artists.

The College is situated at the foot of the hills, in the Victorian Spa town of Malvern. If youare visiting for a summer break, Malvern is an ideal base for exploring the Heart of England. There is a good range of accommodation in the area and the Tourist Information Centre (01684 892289) will be happy to assist visitors with bookings, and advise on other local attractions.

Summer School caters for many different interests. Classes range from short half daysthrough to 2 day events; and we have included a timetable on P16 to help you chooseand plan. Current students can extend their studies, and others may come as a holidaytreat. Teachers find the Summer School useful for inspiring new ideas, and for many people it gives a chance to try something new.

We have a large car park and are within walking distance of the local train station. Ourrefectory offers a variety of hot and cold lunchtime meals, and drinks and snacks duringthe day.

Enjoy browsing the booklet. For postal bookings please use the form on page 17, and aninformation pack including a map and any material requirements will be sent to you -you may wish to enquire about the materials before you enrol. We look forward to meeting you in the summer.

For those wishing to continue with part-time Art & Craft activities, we offer approximately100 classes per term and are introducing residential weekends, starting in November2012. Art

Brian Gorst is an experienced tutor who gained his MFAfrom the Graduate School of Figurative Art, New York.

This one day workshop uses digital presentations, mixed-media exercises and interactive activities to explorecolour theory and its application in art and design.On a voyage of discovery you will be introduced to theelements of hue, value and intensity, understand thefunction of the colour wheel and explore colour mixing,colour relationships, emotion and colour.

This enjoyable course is appropriate for students who work inoils, acrylics, watercolour, mixed media or an applied artsactivity.

Marianne Ryan is a practising artist specialising inpainting and drawing. She trained at Goldsmiths College,London and now teaches both privately and in ArtColleges.

During this workshop students will investigate a number ofdifferent starting points for non-representational work,with colour being of primary importance.A brief presentation of abstract paintings will inspirediscussion of possibilities.

Some experience would be helpful, but you do not needto be a practising painter. You are welcome to bring anymedium and by the end of day you will be able toproduce an abstract painting.

Elizabeth Beattie is a practising artist and experiencedtutor with an honours degree in Fine Art and a doctoratein History of Art. She has exhibited in the UK and Ireland.

Explore the beauty of flowers, plants and foliage tocreate botanical illustrations from direct observation.

Beginning with observational drawing, composition andexperimentation with a range of materials, students willprogress onto a single illustration in a chosen medium orcreate a number of works from different viewpoints.

Demonstrations will be given with reference to majorhistorical and contemporary works of art. The workshopaims to provide a friendly and supportive learningenvironment. Suitable for all levels of ability frombeginners to more experienced artists.

Kim Williams is an experienced tutor whose paintingsand charcoal drawings, specialising in flowers, interiorsand the landscape, are exhibited internationally.

Over two days students will be shown the process ofcreating an impressive flower painting in either oils oracrylics. Students will select and arrange flowers into asuitably lit composition and be guided through theprocesses of initial lay-in and under-painting to thefinished picture.

During the course, Kim will also give an informative talkand slideshow on her own flower paintings, detailing hermethods and procedures, and relating these to the greatstill life and flower painters of the past.

Julia Beard graduated with a Fine Art Degree fromCheltenham School of Art. She is an experiencedteacher who has exhibited work at various galleriesincluding the Royal Academy.

Students will be introduced to a variety of enjoyabletechniques and exercises to improve freedom withindrawing.

Guy Woodford has run life drawing classes here formany years, and his expertise as a sculptor adds gentleemphasis to the 3D qualities of the human figure.

The human figure is an ideal subject for expandingpowers of observation, understanding of form and thedevelopment of drawing.

This day will feature two models; working in short andlonger poses designed to stretch your life drawing skills.

You will be encouraged to work big and bold. Choice of medium is up to you - beginners may wish tostay with pencil, others may opt for charcoal, conté orpen and wash.

Brian Gorst is a practising artist who has over fifteenyears experience in framing and curating exhibitions. Hisadvice and guidance on how to present students’ workhas often proved invaluable.

This one day workshop covers all the practicalities ofpresenting art works including cutting window mounts,selecting mouldings and mount board, glass cutting,some decorative frame finishes and preparing a portfoliofor interview.

Issy Lammas trained as a Painter/Printmaker atHarrogate and Cheltenham, and works in a variety ofmediums. She is keen to encourage less toxic forms ofprintmaking and loves experimenting with newapproaches.

Explore the rich diversity of images that can be producedusing simple equipment and oil-based printing inks. Enjoythe spontaneous approach of monotypes and theflexibility of monoprinting, and discover the secrets ofpainterly printmaking.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and experiencedartists wanting to develop their skills.

Brian Gorst is an internationally exhibited artist andexperienced tutor. As a practising artist, Brian has foundsketching and the use of sketchbooks to be the essenceof good practice.

This one day course looks at how working in sketchbookscan train the observing eye and the drawing hand togive greater flight to expression and feeling; and serve asan engine to thought and ideas.

Students will look at examples of the sketchbook work ofpractising artists and designers; explore various drawingmaterials and tackle a number of sketching projectsthroughout the day.

Anna Yevtukh studied art and bookbinding in theUkraine and has been making unusual creative bookssince 1998. She is a member of the Society ofBookbinders and the local Guild of Designer Craftsmen.

Orthodox Style BindingAnna will introduce traditional full-leather OrthodoxBinding and show you the different skills involved in thisprocess. Students will create a cover design and learnhow to make and attach traditional fasteners. Elizabeth Beattie is an experienced teacher andcalligrapher who has exhibited her work in the UK andIreland. She is a member of the Calligraphy and LetteringArts Society and is a Fine Art graduate with a doctoratein History of Art.

Calligraphy for BeginnersWorking in a friendly group setting, this workshop willprovide an introduction to Calligraphy. Guidance will begiven according to individual need, and the Italic style willbe used to teach calligraphic fluency. There will bedemonstrations of tools and materials used as well asadvice on techniques for design and layout of text.

Students will produce a piece of Calligraphy inspired bytext of their own choice.

Calligraphy for Beginners and ImproversProviding an in depth experience of Calligraphy includinggold in calligraphic design, this can be taken as a standalone class or as an extension to the one above.

Following a demonstration of gilding using techniques oflaying flat gold, students will be able to gild their ownchoice of letters based on medieval illumination.

Heather Barningham has established her own studioand developed her personal style including a range ofstoneware ceramics. She exhibits regularly and is amember of the Worcester Guild of Designer Craftsmen.

Enjoy a day exploring the versatility of clay whereHeather will provide design ideas and help you developyour own project.

Individual tuition will be given in both throwing (using thewheel) and hand building using coiling. Suitable forbeginners and those with some experience.

Fired items will be available for collection in the Autumnterm.

Lorna Prudden is an artist working in glass who makeskiln fired wall panels and bespoke items in her studio.

Suitable for beginners, and students who are alreadyexperienced in glass, this popular course will introduceyou to the contemporary techniques of working withfused glass.

Learn how to cut and prepare glass for fusing, in order tocreate a beautiful hanging panel or tile. Techniquesinclude experimenting with bullseye glass, frits andstringers, and entrapping metal within the fused glass.

Kiln firing will take place after the class and finishedprojects can be collected in the Autumn term.

Caroline Park is Head of Arts at the Malvern campus.She uses hand-made paper extensively both with herstudents and in her own mixed media work.

Making paper is great fun and the basic techniques areso easy that only ordinary household equipment isneeded. We will make a range of papers and explorethe effects created by embossing, laminating, colourmixing, creating pattern, and using additives in the pulp.The resulting handmade papers can be used for avariety of 2D, 3D, fine art or craft work purposes.

Materials will be supplied but students may like to bring insome more personal resources to create individual papers for their own artwork.

Belinda Gilbert has a Degree in Jewellery andSilversmithing from The School of Jewellery in Birmingham,and an award from the British Jewellers’ Association. Sheis an experienced Jeweller and teacher.

These classes are designed for anyone interested injewellery making. They are suitable for both beginnersand those with more experience. All aspects of thesubject will be introduced from design through to makinga piece of individual jewellery.

Liz Huppert is an experienced tutor and Stained Glassartist using a Tiffany copper technique. Inspired by natureand embellished with coloured wire work and etching,her work takes on an intricate three dimensional quality.

This two day course will give beginners an introduction tothis interesting, varied and enjoyable craft. You will beintroduced to techniques such as copper foiling andleaded work, and the basics of design and glass cutting.You will design and make an appliqué panel and a smallcopper foiled panel to take home.

A limited amount of specialist materials are included inthe course fee. Extra materials will also be available at areasonable cost.

Mandy Carwood studied Art History at the Barber Institute

and is an exceptional tutor with a passion for exploring art

history. These half day illustrated talks are fun and informative.

A Truly British Sensation: The Young British ArtistsTate Modern’s major exhibition this year will provide an overview

of, arguably, Britain’s most controversial artist - Damien Hirst. Join

the debate as we evaluate his oeuvre alongside his fellow YBAs:

will explore the development of theatre alongside Rubens’

masterpieces with an emphasis on the Banqueting House: the

Gerald Dawe has a degree in Botany and was a senior

lecturer at Kingston University. His extensive work experience in

this field includes working at the National Wildflower Centre.

This afternoon will consist of a series of in depth short talks

exploring: bees (bumble, honey and solitary), butterflies and

moths, other insects, birds and wild plants in the garden.

Find out about wildflower seed germination problems and how

to avoid them, which species are easiest to establish, and the

definitively best plants to attract bees, butterflies and birds.

Cathryn Smith has worked as a spiritual healer for anumber of years. She is a qualified reflexologist who usesyoga and meditation in her daily practice.

Sculpture

Guy Woodford is an experienced sculptor whooriginally trained in Figurative Sculpture and much of hisown work has been figurative. Over the 40 years he hasbeen teaching here, he has developed expertise in bothtraditional and contemporary approaches to sculpture,including woodcarving, stone carving, modelling,construction, subtractive processes and abstraction. Guyis well known for his own sculpture commissions andexhibitions and for the hundreds of students he hastaught successfully.

Abstract SculptureAbstraction has been part of sculpture since its earlybeginnings. In this two day workshop you will make anabstract sculpture, big and bold. Using a chicken wirearmature, you will build up layers of durable plasterreinforced with scrim. Various tools and techniques willallow you to explore different surface treatments. In theprocess you will gain satisfaction and have lots of fun.

Painters of the human form can benefit enormously fromstudying the same form in three dimensions. Working froma live model you will increase your understanding ofbasic anatomy and of the amazing flexibility of thehuman body - and the expressiveness of the face.

Clay is a highly malleable, infinitely flexible medium whichmeans that you can correct and refine the figure as yourthree dimensional grasp expands. When you return topainting you will find that you have a new insight into thehuman form.

Caroline Park is Head of Arts at the Malvern campus.She enjoys teaching free machine embroidery and uses itextensively in her own work because it is easy, quick andfun!

If you have never dared to use a machine for anythingother than traditional stitching, why not learn how to useit to draw and paint? Caroline will show you howmachine embroidery features in contemporary textilesand then introduce you to exciting techniques to try foryourself.

Suitable for anyone with basic sewing machine skills -machines will be provided but you are welcome to bringalong your own machine to discover what it can do.

Eco TextilesEnjoy exploring ecological methods for patterning andcolouring fabrics. You will be able to use natural dyes, rustand organic indigo to create beautiful colours on naturaland recycled fabrics.

Discover ways of layering fabrics and embellishing withstitch to create an explosion of colour and texture.

This workshop will help you in the understanding of colourcombinations; both opaque and transparent. Theeffective use of simple hand stitches will be explored tocreate sumptuous panels.

Sarah Fincken is a textile artist and experienced teacher.She incorporates a variety of textile techniques in her workspecialising in colour, dye and rich embellishment.

This course is designed to explore the delights of dyeing andstitching a Japanese fabric bowl using both traditional handand contemporary sewing techniques.

On day one explore textural stitching patterns beforemaking samples of hand wrapped parcels of fabrics anddyeing them in indigo dye. Take your work home to washand dry overnight.

Day two consists of using your prepared fabric to stitch andcreate your own unique bowl.
