A MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER FOR TRAINING AND SKILLSWelcome to the CAE Summer Short Course Guide.

The Victorian Government is building the Education State – boosting access to education for all Victorians so they can get the jobs they want whilst securing our state’s economic and social future.

As one of more than 300 plus Learn Local adult education providers in Victoria, the CAE offers the welcoming environment many people need to build confidence and develop valuable skills.

Learn Local organisations give people the skills they need for employment, and builds pathways to further education. These organisations are also social hubs for the community, providing life skills which complement a learner’s formal training and extra support for the most disadvantaged in our community.

CAE plays a vital role in further education and ensuring people from all walks of life across all age groups have opportunities to learn and succeed. As one of the state’s largest adult education providers, CAE’s services to the people of Melbourne – both in the CBD and in other locations – are contributing to the strength of the Learn Local sector and are a significant element of Victoria’s workforce development.

With a diverse range of short courses offered all year round, I encourage you to take a minute to see if there is a course that will help you develop new skills and take up new opportunities.

The Hon. Steve Herbert, MP Minister for Training and Skills

Ola CohnOla Cohn M.B.E played an integral role in Melbourne’s artistic scene.

Born in Bendigo in 1892, Ola developed an interest in the arts at an early age, going on to study sculpture at the Bendigo School of Mines and Swinburne Technical College. After graduating, she made the journey to London, where she took up a scholarship at the Royal College of the Arts under the tutelage of Henry Moore.

In 1937 Ola purchased Taylor’s Livery and Stables and renovated the dilapidated East Melbourne property, turning the upstairs hayloft into her home and the stables and coach into her studio. The home quickly became a gathering place for Melbourne’s artists and sculptors.

A pioneer, Ola achieved significant success throughout her career. Some of her most famous sculptures include Fairies’ Tree in Fitzroy Gardens and Head of a Virgin, now in the National Gallery of Victoria.

A highly awarded artist, in 1952 Ola took out the Crouch Prize — a first for a sculptor, before being appointed an O.B.E for services rendered in service of art in 1964.

Ola was a true patron of the arts in Australia. When she died, she bequeathed her home in East Melbourne to the CAE, so that we could continue her legacy.

Today the Ola Cohn Centre delivers a range of classes to the CAE community, like floristry, shibori and screenprinting.

We are exceptionally proud to have been chosen by Ola to carry out her wishes and thankful for her enormous contribution to arts in Melbourne.

Modernism in Early 20th Century Art The early 20th century saw the arrival of Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism and the Bauhaus Academy. Art and Architecture of Early Christian Rome and Ravenna: Catacombs, Domus Ecclesiae, Batisteries, and Pilgrimage ChurchesThese illustrated lectures with Dr Ursula Betka examine the art and architecture from the early Christian era in Rome to the era of late Antiquity in Ravenna (3rd-6th centuries). We begin with the fresco paintings in the Catacombs of Rome which convey a range of subjects including portraits of the deceased, Old and New Testament narratives, along with cryptic symbols and anagrams. The earliest churches designed for public Christian worship – domus ecclesiae or house churches, form the foundations of Santa Pudenziana, Santa Prassede and San Clemente in Rome and constitute both frescoes and mosaic programs that narrative the key stories of salvation history.C Melbourne CBD4 x Tue 9.30am‑11am · Feb 2 to Feb 23 · $129 · DNZ89701C4 x Tue 11.30am‑1pm · Feb 2 to Feb 23 · $129 · DNZ89702C
