What Is the 2018 Summer Skills Workshop?

• The 2018 Summer Skills Workshop is an orientation to prepare incoming students to be successful at CSUN with a focus on engineering/computer science majorso This orientation included:

• Meeting with current faculty• Lectures about student expectation and strategies for academic

success in their first year• Tours of researcher labs and resources available to students during

their time at CSUN

• There was a secondary objective to publicize and recruit students into the AIMS2 Program

Page 3: Summer Skills Workshop Outcomes• The 2018 Summer Skills Workshop is an orientation to prepare incoming students to be successful at CSUN with a focus on engineering/computer science

What Does the 2018 Summer Skills Workshop Consist Of?

• Orientations For Both First Time Freshmen(FTF) and First Time Transfer (FTT) Studentso The FTF orientation included 3 days –Monday through Wednesday,

with Wednesday being a half day.o The FTT orientation included 2 days – Thursday and Friday

• There were two weeks total consisting of 4 total Workshopso 2 workshops for FTFo 2 workshops for FTT

• Sample workshops sessions included:o Library Touro Engineering Lab Touro Team Building Skillso Resources At CSUN

Page 4: Summer Skills Workshop Outcomes• The 2018 Summer Skills Workshop is an orientation to prepare incoming students to be successful at CSUN with a focus on engineering/computer science

Data Collection• After each workshop day, we distributed print

surveys, fielding questions from studentso Each Day Consisted Of Outcome Measures, Satisfaction Measures,

Rankings, and Open Responseo A total of 43 FTF Students Participatedo A total of 22 FTT Students Participated

• After two months, we conducted a focus groupo This was done to understand how the Summer Skills Workshop impacted

students time after the semester had already startedo We waited to conduct the focus groups so as to only include current

AIMS2 studentso A total of 6 students participated

• 4 being FTF• 2 being FTT

Explaining Survey Outcomes and Scales

• Students were surveyed on two dimensions of the Summer Skills Workshopo Workshop Outcomes: Did the session do what it set out to do?o Workshop Satisfaction: Did students find they left satisfied from the

session?

• We also asked students to rank the sessions based on these outcomeso In the proceeding graphs the lower the number the higher the rank.o If one session has a lower number than another session than it means most

of the time it was ranked higher.o The distance between the average scores shows how closely or distantly

each session ranked to each other in the minds of the students.

General Patterns: FTF • Students enjoyed most workshop sessions, though there

are some sessions that student’s definitely enjoyed more than otherso Which ones Did students Enjoy?

• Engineering Lab Tour • Library Tour• Final Competition

• Growth Mindset is an area that could use a little bit of reworking, especially because student’s gave feedback about simply being shown a videoo “The growth mindset video is really long to really enjoy.”

• Students rated Engineering Ethics consistently low, they liked it but not a much as the other workshops

• Students thought the Ice Breaker was a bit awkward.o “I got to say that it was a little bit awkward cause it was right off the bat and

we didn’t know each other we were just reading off those flash cards, those business cards so it was kind of a little bit awkward cause two minutes felt like forever. “

Page 21: Summer Skills Workshop Outcomes• The 2018 Summer Skills Workshop is an orientation to prepare incoming students to be successful at CSUN with a focus on engineering/computer science

General Patterns: FTT• Students consistently rated the workshop sessions

high, both in outcome and satisfaction, though some were liked more than others.o Which ones were liked most?

• Library and Engineering Lab Tour• Senior Design Project• Explanations of Their DPR

• Transfer students mentioned that meeting with their faculty was extremely helpful.o “Understanding my DPR has been an amazing experience. Planning out

my fall schedule has been so helpful. [Redacted} has made it so easy for me.”

• Since there the rankings were so close all sessions were seen as beneficial.

Page 22: Summer Skills Workshop Outcomes• The 2018 Summer Skills Workshop is an orientation to prepare incoming students to be successful at CSUN with a focus on engineering/computer science

General Observations Between FTF and FTT

• Students in both groups enjoyed the tours of the Library and the Engineering Lab, constantly ranked the within the highest within their days.o “…the library tour was definitely helpful cause I’ve actually used a couple of

the resources that I assume would be hard to find otherwise like the media library, like I’ve 3D printed a couple things”

• Students in both groups enjoyed with meeting their faculty and talking about what the expectations are for them in their first year.

• Students enjoyed talking about their major and the intricacies of the department they are soon to join.

• FTT tended to like the Team Building more than the FTF students.

• The FTT sessions were focused on practical help, having less sessions than FTF

Page 23: Summer Skills Workshop Outcomes• The 2018 Summer Skills Workshop is an orientation to prepare incoming students to be successful at CSUN with a focus on engineering/computer science

Big Picture• Students overall really enjoyed the workshops and

found sessions extremely worthwhile to attend• Each of the sessions was highly rated in both in their

practical outcomes and the general satisfaction.• Showing students academic resources is something

students enjoyed and found useful for their first year• Students find the experience being in AIMS2

rewarding, especially the mentorship aspect• Though there are things that can be changed, most

of the responses from the students were extremely positive

“I really liked the third day activity where we had to make shoes out of duct tape, … we learned so many things even if it’s just about engineering we’ve thought

more about, we had a chance to think about it more”

Page 24: Summer Skills Workshop Outcomes• The 2018 Summer Skills Workshop is an orientation to prepare incoming students to be successful at CSUN with a focus on engineering/computer science

RecommendationsPeople enjoyed these workshops so these

recommendations are based on the slight variation between them

• Online Surveys• Keeping to the schedule• Changing up the Ice Breakers• If continuing to include Growth Mindset session,

have it in person rather than over a video• Consider new approaches/options for engineering

ethics session• Meeting with the faculty has a profound impact on

the student’s experience—more time with faculty in workshop sessions

Thank you!Questions?

“That I'll be prepared to what challenges (academic) lies ahead in the future. I'm well informed about the resources that are available for me. I feel really

excited to start my first semester here at CSUN.”

“I feel so much comfortable now that I'll be starting my first semester at CSUN this fall. Everyone was helpful and wonderful in and some were funny but in a

good way. Go matadors!”
