Summer Start Programs & Events CalendarSummer Start is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about campus resources, meet faculty and staff members, and get to know other students. In this booklet, you’ll find a list of programs and events taking place throughout the summer to assist Summer Start students in building these connections.

Many of the events take place on campus, but some opportunities will occur in the community surrounding NC State’s campus. For the off-campus programs, if transportation will be provided by the Summer Start program, a notation may be found in the program description. Please note that some programs may require registration in advance. To sign up for programs, please visit go.ncsu.edu/startevents.

Summer Start Office HoursStop by the Summer Start office in Owen Hall and say hi! We’ll be located in the study room attached to the Owen Basement Lounge from 10:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Feel free to come ask any questions or get to know some of the Summer Start staff!

Program PassportAttending the events and opportunities offered during Summer Start will not only help you adjust to life at NC State, but it can also win you prizes! We’ll keep track of which events everyone attends, and if you manage to attend at least one event in the on-campus program categories (Academic Success; Social Connections; Health & Wellness; Diversity & Inclusion; and Wolfpack Pride), your name will be entered to win four $75 gift cards to Wolfpack Outfitters. Winners will be announced at the End of Summer Cookout on July 26.

Wednesday, June 26: LSFY Ice Cream Social 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM | 2725 Bostian Hall The Life Sciences First Year (LSFY) program welcomes you to NC State! Students in the LSFY program are invited to join LSFY faculty, advisors and staff for an Howling Cow ice cream social. Drop in anytime and stay as long as you like! We hope to see you there!

CALS students should plan to meet with their academic department at least once during Summer Start. Be sure to check your NC State email for additional information!

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

College of DesignDesign students should plan to stop by the College of Design Student Services Office in 225 Brooks Hall at least once during Summer Start to introduce themselves. Staff members are also there to answer advising and scheduling questions.

College of EngineeringFriday, July 5: Mid-Semester Academic Check-up4:30 PM - 5:30 PM | 218 Daniels HallThe Mid-semester Academic Check-Up (MAC) session is for all Engineering First Year students participating in Summer Start. The goal of the session is for academic advisors to provide timely, proactive advising to students in their summer classes, to facilitate their transition to college life, and to promote student success in the College of Engineering.

Meet some of the academic advisors and the various resources available to you in the college for your academic success. Snacks will be provided.

College of SciencesCollege of Sciences students should contact their academic advisor to determine if a face-to-face meeting during Summer Start would be beneficial. Find your academic advisor’s information on MyPack Portal and send them an email to start a discussion.

Wilson College of TextilesWilson College of Textiles students can contact their academic advisor during Summer Start if they have any questions or concerns about courses, curriculum, or academic policies.

Visit drop-in tutoring for any 100 or 200-level math course; no appointment needed! Tutoring will begin on Monday, June 24, and will be held Monday-Thursday evenings throughout Summer Start from 6:00-9:00 pm.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding | 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM Falls Lake, $35Join us for a fun and relaxing day of stand-up paddleboarding at Falls Lake State Recreation Area, a 40-minute drive from campus. How to THRIVE: Chemistry Workshop 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM Dabney 210Learn tips and tricks that will help you thrive in chemistry from Dr. Jeremiah Feducia, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry.

GLBT 101 Workshop | 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM Owen Hall Basement Lounge This workshop serves as an introduction to GLBT issues for NC State students. The intended outcomes are as follows: 1) participants will be able to define core GLBT identity concepts and terminology, 2) participants will be able to identify common issues faced by GLBT students, and 3) participants will be able to describe ways they can practice GLBT inclusion.

Civil Rights Museum Trip | 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Meet in front of Reynolds Coliseum Join us for a trip to the International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro, NC! The International Civil Rights Museum is located at 134 S. Elm Street in the heart of downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. This is an archival center, collecting museum and teaching facility devoted to the international struggle for civil and human rights. The museum celebrates the nonviolent protests of the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins that served as a catalyst in the civil rights movement. Transportation and lunch are provided for the trip. Crossing Cultures in College Workshop 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM Owen Hall Basement Lounge NC State takes pride in our diverse student and employee populations and the inclusive nature of the Wolfpack family. The Wolfpack World identity is made up of people from all over the world with incredibly different experiences. This peer-led workshop explores some of the challenges in diversity and provides strategies for working successfully across cultural differences by introducing some of the basic concepts of cultural anthropology.

TUESDAY JULY 16 Microaggressions Workshop 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Owen Basement Lounge The term “microaggression” is used to describe language and actions that either intentionally or unintentionally communicate hostile, derogatory, or dismissive attitudes towards marginalized communities (people of color, GLBT people, women, people with disabilities, etc.). This presentation will help students understand what microaggressions are, how they impact the people who experience them, and how to avoid committing them. Please sign up online in advance.

The Critical Issues in Social Justice Discourse 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM 5210 Talley Student Union Are you interested in learning more about gender and equity and how it relates to social justice? Then this workshop is for you! This workshop serves as an introduction to the NC State Women’s Center and how we engage students in looking critically and intersectionally at issues of social justice. Participants will 1) develop an understanding of intersectionality, 2) be introduced to critical and feminist theories, and 3) be able to describe the ways they can contribute to a culture of active inclusion at NC State. This workshop will be modeled after our signature and popular Feminist Friday series (a Brick tradition) and will showcase how students are learning about and engaging with current social issues.

Mystery Service Saturdays8:00 AM - 2:00 PM Mystery Service Saturday is a monthly program at Leadership and Civic Engagement where students are given the chance to explore the social and volunteer opportunities around North Carolina! Students will embark to an unknown local service organization and provide their help. After this, students will be taken to a fun social activity that explores local North Carolina culture, as well as allows students to interact with those they have served with! Be excited for the element of surprise, and the enjoyment of service. Lunch will be provided. We will only have space for fifteen students, so please sign up quickly at go.ncsu.edu/mysterysat! THURSDAY JULY 25 A Wise, Well Wolfpack | 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM Owen Hall Wellness is more than eating healthy and getting a daily dose of exercise. This session will show what impacts your health, and include key life hacks to balancing your well-being for your most successful year.

Open Swim | 7:30 PM - 8:45 PM Carmichael Gym Come for a swim or to just hang out and have some fun! Don’t know how to swim? Come anyway! We will have a swim instructor available to learn some of the basics and answer any questions you may have!
