Building Britain's Infrastructure for over 50 Years www.breheny.co.uk

The England football team did very well in the World Cup, we’ve been inundated with awards for the great work our people are doing and we’ve got the best tender list I’ve ever known. What more could I ask for?

On the awards front, in recent weeks we’ve won two awards in the Suffolk Business Awards; we received an ICE Technical Excellence and Innovation Award for Bury St Edmunds Eastern Relief Road ; we’ve been nominated for the CECA Inspiring Change award, for our multi lingual Health & Safety Guide; our Doncaster apprentice Oliver Chamberlain was runner in the CECA Regional Apprentice of the Year awards and the business won Talent Champion category at the NCE100 national awards.

Many of these awards have been won in the face of stiff completion from national contractors, so I’d like to say a big thank you to all involved, you should be very proud of your achievements.

Some of you, who work in the head office, will have noticed that I haven’t been in the office so much recently. This is because I’ve taken the

decision to step back and leave the running of the business to my senior directorship team, who have been set the task of getting the business in shape for the next generation.

This doesn’t mean I won’t still be involved, as I’ll still be attending board meetings, visiting sites in my capacity as a member of the SLT, meeting clients and of course, keeping you informed via the “Chairman’s message”. I would however like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work over the years, I’ve enjoyed coming in to work and meeting you all, but I feel that the time is right to hand over the reins.

I’m sure the company is in capable hands and I look forward to hearing about your achievements and enjoying my semi- retirement.

After the wet winter that adversely affected production on our sites, we’re now enjoying Mediterranean-like weather that is providing a different set of challenges to our people working out in the sweltering conditions. I’m sure it can’t be easy working out on site in such extreme temperatures.

SHEQ Update

Following on from last year’s issue of the SHEQ Standards & Guidance documents, which were produced to support the safe delivery of the Company’s SHEQ Policies and Procedures, we have produced the Visual SHEQ Standards Guide booklet.

This booklet is intended to hightlight key safety responsibilities and make standards available to you in a format that is easy to refer to and understand. Please read it, to make sure you are familiar with its contents and crucially, to use it. Simple cartoons have been used within the booklet to convey the safety message, which can be understood by all, irrespective of language.

The booklet has been produced in English, Punjabi and Romanian so that we may foster an inclusive safety culture and to support our supply chain partners for whom English is a second language or are non-English speaking. We have also produced a new induction DVD, which again is available in English, Punjabi and Romanian. The business was shortlisted by CECA at the Inspiring Change Awards 2018 for Inspiring change in the workplace category for the production of our translated safety documents.

Our safety performance has been

recognised again with a 2018 RoSPA Occupational Health & Safety Gold Award and a 2018 British Safety Council International Safety Award, the 36th in succession.

We remain committed to achieving the highest possible standards of health, safety and environmental performance on all of our construction projects. We are committed to everyone going home safe every day; think safe, work safe, home safe and would thank you for your support in our journey to build an excellent safety culture.

Featured Projects

The £12 million Stortford Fields project is being undertaken on behalf of a consortium of four major UK house builders. It consists of the provision of new road and sewer networks, major S278 installations and service diversions.

In order to deal with major service diversions, methods such as auger boring have been adopted to reduce the impact of traditional methods (trenching) which could impact local road networks.

As part of the site storm water strategy for the development, we facilitated the design and installation of a 9000m3 storm attenuation tank, one of the largest ever built in the UK

Included within the initial Phase 1 contract, the site team have utilised a variety of engineering disciplines, from installation of major temporary works for access shafts, pipe jacking 1200mm diameter PCC pipes beneath a 132KV oil filled UKPN pipe serving Stansted airport and tunnelling to facilitate the installation of smaller pipelines.

The site covers land including a SSSI and an RSPB area seaward side of the flood bank and Sandringham Estate farmland. Breheny are working closely with the client, Kings Lynn Drainage Board and the Environment Agency to reduce impact to the abundant wildlife and to preserve rich natural habitats on the site.

The three new structures each consist of permanent cofferdams constructed from steel sheet piles up to 17 metres long with reinforced concrete capping beams and walls. The new main drain inlet structure will house 3 new electric pumps capable of shifting 4800 litres/second out to sea via 3no. 900mm diameter pumping mains. A second inlet structure controls the River Ingol which flows through twin 1.5 metre diameter culverts under the sea bank and out to

sea. The third structure is a combined outfall which is designed to reduce the build-up of silt which currently hinders river flows.

The contract is programmed over 59 weeks and is due for completion in May 2019. The original pumping station was opended by King George VI and it is hoped the Queen will attend the opening ceremony of the new structure.

Project News

Works are nearing completion at Sundays Hill - SouthamptonWorking for a consortium of three national house builders, we have designed and built the £10.9 million by-pass at Burslesdon, near the M3-M27 intersection.

Sundays Hill has proven challenging for all involved, the scale of the work involved in taking the scheme through the necessary design approval and planning process, whilst simultaneously attempting to continue with its construction, has been considerable. Our site team led by Project Manager Craig Sims deserve great credit for their perseverance, skill and hard work in delivering this project.

The new bypass is 1.1 km long with a 20m single-span concrete bridge on green field land which will open up a much-needed housing development in the area.

The site is ecologically sensitive and a great

deal of work has been done to preserve the local flora and fauna. The bridge, which sits on piled 8m high concrete abutments, also allows bats to traverse the valley containing their natural habitat whilst avoiding vehicular traffic.

The works are due to be completed in September 2018. This has been an interesting project managed by staff from the new Breheny Office in Petersfield. Regional Contracts Manager Nick Stapleton said that:

Kent County Council awards Breheny A2500 Improvement scheme

Decommissioning Bells and Mocketts Pumping Stations Our Addington Office commenced construction of the new £1.5 million Bells Pumping Station in July 2017 for the Lower Medway Inland Drainage Board (LMIDB) to enable the old pumping station to be decomissioned.

Works included the installation of a permanent cofferdam, constructed to very high tolerances. Concrete pours included a 650mm thick base slab within the 30m x 10m cofferdam. A concrete spillway was constructed to allow the excess fresh water from the surrounding farmland to discharge into the sea.

The mechanical and electrical phase comprised of the installation of two fully enclosed Archimedes screw pumps, capable of pumping up to 3m³ of water per second. These pumps were employed because of their high efficiency due to lack of water loss and allowance of safe passage for eels, from fresh to salt water. A large control kiosk was also installed at the top of the concrete structure to house instrumentation for the pumps and mechanised weed rake.

A final Civils phase made sure the project was completed to programme in May 2018 to a high standard ensuring complete client satisfaction.

Breheny have begun work on the £3.95 million scheme to improve the A2500 Lower Road on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. Works include a new roundabout replacing the existing traffic light-controlled junction between Lower Road and Barton Hill Drive and is due to be completed by January 2019.

Phase 2 of the scheme is currently going through the final design process and involves the widening of 1km of the A2500 Lower Road between the newly constructed roundabout and Cowstead Corner Roundabout.

The completion of Phase 2 is currently programmed for December 2019. This is a key project for Breheny working for Kent County Council out of our Addington Office.

The roundabout is being funded by £1.26 million from the Department of Transport (DfT) through funding known as Local Growth Fund (LGF) allocated to the South East Local Enterprise Partnership and contributions from local developments.
