Red Hot Summer Camp

Red Hot Summer Camp is a day camp for boys and girls 4 to 10 years old. All Red Hot Summer campers will take part in fun-filled crafts, cooking, messy sci-ence, inclusive team games and sports, swimming every day (weather permitting), and much more!

Campers will enjoy theme events such as campers versus counselors field day, hikes in the Wissahickon, field trips, and other special programs. Special guests—magician, puppeteer, and a few friends from the zoo—make visits to camp throughout the summer.

Our campus boasts a brand new athletic complex, air-conditioned buildings, and a cafeteria that will provide all of our snacks and lunches—included in the cost of camp! Our low-cost Morning Care and Afternoon Care options make this an ideal program for working parents.

Campers will be divided into groups by age and each group will be matched with qualified and experienced counselors to ensure a safe, fun, and caring environment filled with camp traditions. Dates: June 10 – August 16 (closed July 4) Time: 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM Ages: 4 – 10 Cost: $300 per week; $240 for the week of July 1 (includes lunch and snacks)

Curious Jane Day Camp

Curious Jane Day Camp is a high-energy program for rising 2nd–6th grade girls. We offer multiple weekly ses-sions that revolve around creative explorations in de-sign, engineering, and science. All themes are offered all weeks, and girls choose their favorite theme each week! The program is hands-on and project-based. Girls learn and have fun through DOING. They are encouraged to be active, look at things in new ways and—above all—experi-ment! We also spend plenty of time outside and work on a variety of projects as a group, so that girls in different themes can get to know each other. Our instructors are endlessly enthusiastic about their topics and very sup-portive of the girls’ ideas and work.

Themes: Digi-Fun • Build the City • DIY Your Room • Spy Science • Wired 101 We are a close-knit group passionate about gender-af-firming opportunities and creative, project-based learn-ing. We are fun, supportive, and enthusiastic—with our guidance, the girls set the tone, and each group creates its own magic!

Adventures in Art

Interested in exploring your artistic side? Do you like working with sculpture or drawing and painting? Do you love to build things? Then this is the camp for you! We will explore art using several different mediums.

DRaWIng, PaInTIng, anD PhoToShoPDates: June 24 – June 28This is a cool class because it’s rare to see this combina-tion of working with studio materials and working with digital media in the same week. The painting component will use cardboard and other materials to make a paint-ing that is three-dimensional. Campers will be exposed to the basics of Photoshop so that they can work on an independent project. No drawing, painting, or Photoshop experience is necessary, but if you do have experience it will allow you to work at a more advanced level.

ClaYmaTIon anImaTIon Dates: July 8 – July 12 This is a rollicking good time because the combination of working in clay, building and painting scenery, and then animating your story on the computer in iStop Motion is just so much fun. Also, we use GarageBand to make music and record the voices for the characters, so the week is full of fun. At the end, we post our animations on YouTube so everyone everywhere can enjoy them. ClaY SCulPTuRe Dates: July 15 – July 19 In this class we will be building sculpture using two dif-ferent kinds of clay, cardboard, and paint. For environ-ments (anything from castles to caves), we will use a kind of clay that hardens and can be painted, while for people, animals, monsters, etc., we will use another kind of colored clay that allows the user to get a lot of detail. When using the clays together, we can build very elabo-rate scenes. ComPuTeR anImaTIon Dates: July 22 – July 26We will be using a sophisticated but easy-to-use anima-tion program to develop a short story line, create a car-toon character, and then animate that character or char-acters with backgrounds you make yourself. Then you will be able to add your own music (made in GarageBand) and create voices for each of your characters. Learning the program will be simple even for kids who have never done any animation or computer drawing before. The main goal is to have fun!

For all camps:Time: 9:00 AM – 3:30 PMAges: 9 – 12Cost: $290 per week (includes lunch and snack)

Students participating for the full two weeks will even get to star in the film, culminating in an official From Stage to Screen Camp Red Carpet Premiere! Let’s make a movie!

Dates: July 8 – July 19Cost: $600 (covers two weeks of camp; includes lunch and snack) Ages: 7 – 12 Time: 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM

RTSRock Camp

Learn to play classic rock songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, Led Zeppelin, and more. This music-based camp introduces beginners with little or no previous training to the fundamentals of rock performance, including guitar power chords, bass riffs, backbeat-driven rhythms, and emotive vocals. Intermedi-ate students with regular instrumental lessons will have the opportunity to work in separate groups to study rock music in greater depth, undertaking closer note-for-note transcriptions of guitar solos and bass lines, original tempos and percussion arrangements, and multiple-part vocal harmonies. In addition to daily drum circle warm-ups, instrumental sectionals, band rehearsals, and general music instruction, we will listen to audio record-ings, watch documentary and concert film excerpts, view archival concert photographs, and discuss interviews and newspaper articles about the bands and music that we study. This is a multi-instrumental camp. Participating students will be encouraged to play guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, as well as sing. The camp-culminating concert is open to family and friends.

Dates: July 8 – July 12Time: 9:00 AM – 3:30 PMAges: 9 – 13Cost: $300 per week (includes lunch and snack)

DirectorJosh Olmstead (B.A., Temple University) joined SCH Academy’s after-school instrumental program in 2002 to teach guitar. Josh is a classically trained guitarist, whose repertoire includes Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic works. As a classical guitarist, he has performed for private functions at the

Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, National Constitu-tion Center, and the Samuel Powel House. Josh is also an accomplished songwriter and recording and perform-ing artist. His original music was recently featured in an episode of Southwest Airline’s Dish Trip. Josh’s songs also receive regular airplay on independent radio stations. As a guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Josh has performed internationally in England, Scotland, Germany, and the Netherlands, as well as in several U.S. cities. As a guitar instructor, Josh chooses specific coursework and style of guitar based on the interests and skill-level of individual students. Creepy Crawly Creek Critters

If you like to explore, dig, hike, and have collections of things from nature, then this is the camp for you! Camp-ers will explore the Wissahickon Creek—wading with fishnets, digging and flipping rocks to see what creatures we can find that live there. We will spend mornings in the woods searching for treasures and afternoons in the science lab observing our treasures and learning about them. We will make some nature-related crafts, have a morning snack, lunch in the cafeteria, and a swim at mid-day. So if you want to know who lives under rocks and why, we will see you there!

Dates: July 8 – July 12 Time: 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM Ages: 6 – 8 Cost: $300 per week (includes lunch and snack)

DirectorThis camp will be led by Stephanie Moore, a Lower School teacher at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

Outdoor Adventurers Camp

Outdoor Adventurers Camp is designed to get boys and girls ages 9–11 outside each day to explore the Wissa-hickon Valley. The camp is small, limited to 15 campers and three counselors, allowing us great mobility and the ability to tackle activities that larger groups could not. We will hike the trails and learn about native flora and fauna. We will visit the Lenape Indian statue on our daylong hike to the Wissahickon environmental education center to learn how the Native Americans lived in the valley for thousands of years. We will work together and build trust in one another on the elements of the SCH Academy ropes course, high in the canopy of the tulip poplars. We will learn the basics of archery in the woods behind SCH Academy. We will venture off campus, spending the day canoeing on the Brandywine River. We will visit Ringing Rock Park and explore a huge boulder field where the rocks ring and hike a streambed to a 20-foot waterfall. We will visit the Philadelphia Rock Gym to learn the basics of rock climbing.

Outdoor Adventurers is a great place for kids to discover nature’s playgrounds that are hiding right in their back-yards while nurturing respect and stewardship for the wild spaces around them.
