July 2019
Life is an adventure. I think I was thirteen when my English teacher made that strange proclamation. There was little I could do other than take her word for it. At my stage of the life game, I had no money, no driver’s
license, and no idea what real adventure entailed. Mine was a family of cautious people. We unplugged the TV during thunderstorms, never went swimming within an hour of eating lunch, and locked our doors at night. Nobody had a passport, an EZ Pass, or a single fr equent fl yer mile. The word adventure conjured up images of risky behavior in uncharted territory. We went on vacations, not adventures. There was no Mt. Everest in my future. We needed no sherpa or oxygen tanks to explore the Catskills.
My great grandmother, Mabel Orr Booth, got all the adventure genes allocated to our family. She loved to travel, she loved adventure. She wasn’t afr aid of the unfamiliar. Mabel surrounded herself with some pretty impressive celebrities fr om 1930-1970. She spent time with Welsh author, Richard Llewellyn. Some of Grandma’s people came fr om northern Wales. They had a lot in common. Mabel met explorer Thor Heyerdahl only once but spoke of him oft en. When the name Truman Capote was mentioned, Gram described him as an eccentric genius. Some of her best girlfr iends were Carson McCullers, Ayn Rand and Pearl Buck. Pearl held a special place in her heart. Mabel had a brief encounter with novelist, Leon Uris, and a much longer, more intense relationship with American author, James Michener. Grandma said she cried when it was over.
Mabel spent her life raising nine children during the Great Depression on a small farm in Easton, New York. She and her husband worked tirelessly milking cows and growing melons and strawberries to sell to passersby. As far as I know, they never ventured more than 70 miles fr om their home. Nevertheless Gram found time and money fr om her roadside strawberry sales to experience a lifetime of rich adventures. At the end of each day, aft er the dishes were washed and the children were off to bed, Mabel settled into her rocking chair and took off for China, Israel, Wales, New York City, and Tahiti among countless other destinations. Her adventures were found on the pages of The Good Earth, Exodus, How Green Was My Valley, Breakfast at Tiff any’s, and Kon Tiki. Grandma Booth oft en spoke of the sadness she felt upon reading the fi nal page of Michener’s epic, Hawaii. It was among her favorite adventures.
Grandma needed no trust fund or fancy luggage to pursue adventure in her life. She didn’t let arthritis slow her down. With a cold lemonade beside her, Mabel traveled the world and met hundreds of fascinating characters all fr om the comfort of her living room… no reservations, no security checks, no missed connections. Sounds like a wonderful idea. Maybe I’ll see you at the library. Enjoy July with your adventures!

Come and listen to Chris Leonard, City Historian & GE Realty Plot Historian, talk about his new book: “Schenectady GE Realty Plot”. The book focuses on the history of the Plot, not so much the architecture, and includes not only the big names (like Steinmetz) but also 2nd and 3rd generation residents who also did great things. You’ll enjoy hearing about Alice (the purple caft an lady) who was a force of nature and gave fabulous parties on her porch. The plot was never intended to be strictly inhabited by GE people. It was envisioned as a place where political, business, religious and entertainment elite would reside, with GE at the center of it.

Thoroughbred Horse Racing at Saratoga: 1863 to the present
Tuesday, July 16th, 6:00 pm in the Great Room - Presenter: Charlie Kuenzel
During the summer of 1863, John Morrissey and others began to experiment with the possibility of having horse races in the village of Saratoga Springs. Since 1863 was at the height of the American Civil War, large numbers of horses were not available due to the war eff ort. Limited to only to a few horses for the purpose of racing, a short race meet of a few days proved to be a very popular event that would be continued and improved upon even today.

The Underground Railroad was the movement that enslaved Afr ican Americans used to gain fr eedom in the 19th Century. The Capital Region of New York State was visited by thousands of fugitives seeking fr eedom in the years prior to the Civil War. The Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc. seeks to acknowledge the activeunderground railroad movement in our region, to raise awareness about and stimulate interest in this little recognized and inspiring part of our history, to understand it in its historic context, to encourage the recognition of local historic fi gures and the activities in which they engaged, to preserve the history and to relate the history with us today.
