‘Borrowed ambulances risk lives’BY TARA MURRAY

LIVES are at risk because ambulancesare being taken out of Sunbury dailyto cover shortages elsewhere, accord-ing to local paramedics.

Sunbury paramedic Al Briggs saysthe town has two 24-hour units, atJacksons Creek and Sunbury, but bothare hardly ever available.

‘‘Most days, the computer systemidentifies ‘blackspots’ where there areshortages and sends a unit to the city,most of the time to Hillside or Essen-don,’’ he said.

‘‘It means that when [Sunbury] getsa job, there’s a wait of 20-25 minutesfor an ambulance.’’

Mr Briggs said Ambulance Victor-

ia’s claims last year that Sunbury’swaiting times would decrease becauseof the allocation of more resourceshad not eventuated.

‘‘They’re pinching our ambulancesto fix issues elsewhere,’’ he said.

‘‘Last Sunday, the Jacksons Creekunit was sent to Meadow Heights to achild having a fit. They arrived 38minutes later.

‘‘All the closer units were blockedup at the Northern Hospital [inEpping].’’

In another case, the Jacksons Creekunit was called to a job in Essendon asthe local unit was attending in Brim-bank. The Essendon crew then reques-ted the jobs be swapped to reducetravelling times, but that was rejected.

The Essendon crew then spent two 1⁄2hours at Brimbank without a job, whileJacksons Creek paramedics attendedEssendon calls. Melton crews then hadto cover the shortage in Sunbury.

Mr Briggs said paramedics weregetting frustrated at not being able toattend jobs quickly because of dispatchissues.

He said the case of a severely burnedDiggers Rest woman waiting 18minutes for an ambulance had leftofficers at the station angry.

The woman, who died of her injuriesat The Alfred hospital, had to wait foran ambulance from St Albans as theSunbury crew was on a break.

‘‘The older ones at the station areangry and dumbfounded that those on

duty weren’t called off a break,’’ MrBriggs said.

‘‘They had been sent on a break early.We get called off breaks all the time,especially on night shift.

‘‘The team manager was in the stationand could have taken the four-wheel-drive equipped with pain [relief] medica-tion. He was surprised he wasn’t called.’’

Shadow parliamentary secretary forhealth Wade Noonan called for aninvestigation into services in the Sunburyregion.

‘‘They need to investigate the situationand assess how local paramedics arebeing dispatched and fix it,’’ he said.

Ambulance Victoria had not respon-ded to requests for comment bydeadline.

Police need help over burglaryPolice are appealing for public help to identify a

man following an aggravated burglary in Sunbury’s

Shetland Way on Tuesday. About 10.50pm, a

woman saw a man standing at her front door with

a firearm. The man, described as being about 30,

180cm tall, with solid build with and dark, unkempt

curly hair, did not harm the woman. It is believed

he left the area in a silver or grey Mitsubishi

Magna. He was wearing dark-coloured

sunglasses and a yellow and blue tradesman’s

Money, at last, to fix blackspotsBY TARA MURRAY and ANGELA VALENTE

MORE than $1 million will be spent on fixingthree roads in the Macedon Ranges as part of lastweek’s federal budget.

The roads in Newham and Lancefield receivedfunding under the government’s blackspotprogram.

The money for the roads was one of two majorhighlights in the budget for Sunbury andMacedon Ranges residents.

The other is $3 billion funding for theMelbourne Metro rail tunnel, which will benefitSunbury and Craigieburn line commuters,creating additional capacity for more than20,000 passengers a day.

The Three Chain and Dons roads intersectionin Newham, where there have been one deathand nine people seriously injured in the past fiveyears, received $814,000 for upgrade works.

Romsey-Hanging Rock Road (known asStraws Lane) in Newham received $186,000.

Lancefield’s Burke and Wills Track and Show-lers Road and Wescott Lane will have $98,000.

Macedon Ranges highway patrol officer-in-charge Sergeant Geoff Neil says anyone whodrives along those roads would welcome theworks.

‘‘They are exceptionally dangerous intersec-tions and have big issues, including limited sightcapacity. Any financial assistance for StrawsLane would assist major events held at Hanging

Rock. Any improvement to road infrastructure, Iwelcome whole heartedly. It’s a pity we can’t domore and it’s also a pity that we have to wait for atragedy to strike before we respond.’’

The government also allocated $525 million tocomplete the M80 Ring Road upgrade.

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said: “The budgetis a big win for McEwen, with huge investmentsin our classroom and our kids to give them thebest possible start in life.

“The Gillard government is fully funding anddelivering DisabilityCare so our nation is a fairerplace with the most vulnerable members of ourcommunity no more left behind. More than 4500local people with a disability may be eligible forLabor’s DisabilityCare Australia scheme.’’

New protectionfor Stanley Park

A NEW management plan for Mount Macedon’sStanley Park will help protect and enhance thereserve’s ecological value.

Macedon Ranges Council is seeking residents’feedback over the plan.

The six-hectare reserve is made up of forest,grassland and a recreational park owned andmanaged by the council with help from theStanley Park management committee.

Consultants compiling the plan found 159flora species within the reserve, including 90indigenous and 69 introduced species.

A creek runs through the reserve and drops toa gully via a waterfall.

The reserve has a rotunda, barbecue area,children’s playground, picnic tables, toilets and atennis court.

Council’s director of planning and environ-ment Sophie Segafredo says the plan would helpprotect the reserve as it continues to host low-impact recreation activities.

The plan will also help the council access stateand federal funding for works and educationprograms.

The new plan replaces the 37-year-old originalmanagement plan.

The management committee hopes the newplan will ‘‘ensure the preservation of the naturaland cultural heritage and the ecological restora-tion and maintenance of the reserve’’.

Ms Segafredo said the council would build a

partnership with the committee to increasecommunity environmental and social benefits.

‘‘The enhancement of this reserve will alsocontribute to internal and external tourismopportunities in the shire.’’

Classes return, but VU site’s future remains cloudedTHE future of the old Victoria University site atJacksons Hill is still undecided despite tertiaryeducation returning to Sunbury.

The university said last year it intended to sellthe campus site, where it stopped running classesin 2010.

The sale depends on approval from HigherEducation and Skills Minister Peter Hall, whohas repeatedly told the Weekly that ‘‘the

government will not grant approval to sell thesite until satisfactory arrangements are made forongoing delivery of tertiary education’’.

The Weekly reported on April 30 that theuniversity would resume tertiary courses inSunbury from semester one next year as part of a‘Hume Multiversity’ project.

A Department of Education and Early Child-hood Development spokeswoman said last week

the council and Victoria University were stillin discussions about further education in thearea.

‘‘There are currently discussions and negoti-ations continuing between the Hume Counciland VU to complete a post-secondary educationplan for the region.

‘‘There are no plans to sell VU’s Sunburycampus until the plan is finished and approved.’’

A university spokesman said it was exploringways to deliver courses in Sunbury. ‘‘There willbe diploma programs that will lead into under-graduate degree programs. In the interim, thelocation is at the local neighbourhood house.’’

He said the university was still consulting anumber of groups, including the council, aboutuse of the Jacksons Hill site.

Hume separatessmoke and playBY TARA MURRAY

SMOKING will be banned at play-grounds, skate parks, swimming poolsand children’s sporting events in Hume.

Councillors last Monday voted for theban that will lead to 367 areas being off-limits to smokers across the municipality.

The council’s decision follows the stategovernment announcement in Februarythat it would look at changing theTobacco Act to ban smoking in theseareas across the state.

Newly released state Health Depart-ment data shows that 24.5 per cent ofHume residents smoke, ranking the citysixth-highest for serial smokers amonglocal government areas (LGAs) in thestate.

Pyrenees shire has the most smokers,with 31.4 per cent of its residents takinga regular puff, the data for last yearshows.

In the Macedon Ranges, 17.1 per centof residents smoke, ranking them 62 ofthe 79 LGAs.

Cr Drew Jessop said the move was astep in the right direction.

‘‘The proposed ban will apply to such

areas as playgrounds, skate parks, swim-ming pools, sea baths and children’ssports grounds.’’

He said the council needed to write tothe government to allocate funding forsignage.

‘‘You have to educate people and it’s animportant next step to consider. Wewould hope there would be some supportfrom state government in extending thosenon-smoking areas over time.’’

Cr Jack Medcraft, a non-smoker, wel-comed the council report. ‘‘The reportsays smoking is a health hazard. I do haveconcerns about those who smokecigarettes and it’s good, as a progressivecouncil, to do something about it.’’

Cr Jack Ogilvie said he agreed with theidea of banning smoking but added thegovernment needed to help with fundingsignage, which would cost $110,000.

‘‘That’s a lot of money to put up somesigns and there’s no enforcement actionsin this report.’’

In May last year, Macedon Rangesshire became the second council in thestate to ban smoking in outdoor areas.Baw Baw shire in East Gippsland was thefirst to impose the ban.

Romsey’s Ron Cole doesn’t mind waking at night, as long it’s to help someone. Mr Cole (pictured) has been a volunteer

with the CFA for about 40 years, 34 with the Romsey Fire Brigade. He’s one of 44,000 volunteers on the CFA’s books and

one of about six-million volunteers in Australia. National Volunteer Week, which celebrates volunteers’ work, ended on

Sunday. Mr Cole says he took up volunteering at 17 at Dunolly and Bayswater brigades. As captain for more than 20

years at Romsey, he has been to his fair share of call-outs, attending scrub and building fires and car accidents. He says

he has woken at night a ‘‘fair few times’’ to fight fires but reckons volunteering is a great thing to do. ‘‘It’s a good outlet.

Some people class it as a hobby and others volunteer for many different reasons, but anyone who wants a rewarding

volunteering role that is helping your community, I think they should join.’’ It’s also relationship-building that has led Mr

Cole to four decades of volunteering. ‘‘I like the camaraderie. It’s really terrific within the organisation. I’ve made a lot of

friends across the state. The biggest thing is that I feel like I’m helping someone.’’ – Angela Valente

Hoons to be hitharder in the walletBY ANGELA VALENTE

HIGH penalties, new advertising campaignsand the announcement of a ‘hoon school’ willfurther deter hoon-related driving behaviour inthe Macedon Ranges, a police sergeant says.

New online and radio advertising campaignsby the state government, which kicked off lastweek, will warn hoon drivers and riders thatthey could have to complete a VicRoads safe-driving course before being allowed backbehind the wheel.

Roads Minister Terry Mulder said the coursecost up to $1100 and hoons would have to pay.

The cost is on top of other penalties,including higher fines and impoundment fees,bringing the total cost to a hoon when caughtto about $5000.

Police statistics show that in the past finan-cial year in the Macedon Ranges police area,which includes the Mount Alexander shire, 97cars were impounded under hoon laws, downfrom 120 the previous year.

But the numbers are climbing in nearby

Hume. A total of 426 cars were impoundedthere in the past financial year, the second-highest figure in the state.

More than 21,000 cars have been impoun-ded since hoon laws came into effect in July2006.

Police assistant commissioner for road poli-cing Robert Hill said hoon driving was not aproblem just in Melbourne. Many countryareas had similar issues.

‘‘We know that impounding vehiclesdeprives a hoon of the thing they most need tocontinue their high-risk behaviour — theirvehicle.’’

Macedon Ranges highway patrol officer-in-charge Sergeant Geoff Neil said the campaignwas designed to deter bad driving behaviour.

‘‘They’re still likely to go out and do it, butthey are going to suffer a greater penalty.

‘‘We need to change the mindset of peopleand this is one way of attempting to dothat.

‘‘We need to get that thought implanted intheir brain from the very beginning.’’

MACEDON Ranges residents are more healthyand less stressed than people living in Hume, newdata shows.

The Victorian Health Department’s annuallocal government area profiles, released thismonth, analyse population, socio-economics,services and health data to the end of last year,comparing Victoria’s 79 municipalities in 140categories.

The figures show more than 22 per cent ofHume’s residents and 15.9 per cent of people inthe Macedon Ranges reported being in fair orpoor health. The state average is 18.3 per cent.

Nearly a third (32.2 per cent) of all Humeresidents, the fourth-highest in the state, say theydon’t meet physical activity guidelines, comparedto 22.9 per cent of residents in the MacedonRanges.

Hume has the highest number of residents(19.2 per cent) in Victoria reporting high or veryhigh levels of psychological stress, compared to11.4 per cent in the Macedon Ranges, equal tothe state’s average.

More than half of Hume and Macedon Rangesresidents are overweight or obese.

Hume has the second-highest number out of

79 municipalities for residents with type 2diabetes. Macedon Ranges is ranked 45th.

Hume residents are also struggling when itcomes to meeting the cost of living, scoring in thetop two for both rental and mortgage stress.

One-third of Hume residents (33.4 per cent)reported rental stress, compared to the state aver-age of 25.1 per cent, and 18.6 per cent were

feeling mortgage stress. Only 9.5 per cent ofMacedon Ranges residents were stressed abouttheir mortgages, while 24.3 per cent wereenduring rental stress.

The figures also show Hume has the 10th-highest unemployment rate at 7 per cent, whilethe figure for Macedon Ranges was 2.8 per cent,almost half the state average of 5.4 per cent.

Queues for surgeryjust get longerWAITING times for elective surgery at SunburyDay Hospital have increased in the first threemonths of this year.

The Victorian Health Services performancereport, released last week, shows patients faceda median waiting time of 34 days, up from 27days in the December quarter last year.

People awaiting general surgery had thebiggest jump, up from 61 days in the Decemberquarter to 89 days to the end of March.

The number of patients on the waiting listalso rose, to 166 for the March quarter com-pared to 154 in the December quarter.

In the March quarter, 219 patients who hadbeen on the waiting list were treated in the hos-pital, down from 310 in the previous quarter.

State Health Minister David Davis said thedata wasn’t all bad as the hospital’s perform-ance was better than 12 months earlier.

He said the waiting list fell from 195 in theMarch quarter last year to 166 this year. Thenumber of patients treated increased from 167to 219.

Mr Davis said the report showed the numberof people waiting for elective surgery increasedfrom 45,804 at the end of March last year to50,565 at the end of March this year.

it’s not just the quality of life of the patient, but the family too. If your mum’s had cancer and she’s had the treatment but lost some of that spark she used to have ... it’s a loss.’’

Ramsay grew up in the working-class suburb of Altona and recalls always liking biology. ‘‘I spent a lot of time in the paddocks of Altona and the swamps and I loved plants and little animals.’’

He went on to study science at La Trobe University and became hooked when undertaking practical work. ‘‘I thought this is fantastic, I want to do more of this. I thought at that point I’d love to have my own lab. I had no idea what that meant. But I wanted to do my own experiments and be a scientist.’’

Ramsay’s education evolved to include postdoctoral work in New York at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and then the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

He joined the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 1995 to lead the Differentiation and Transcription Laboratory’’, part of Australia’s largest cancer research group.

One of the most recent experiments has involved using lithium in post-radiation therapy to protect the brain from the worst side effects. The lab put six mice onto a wheel and X-rayed them with a radiotherapy machine, protecting their body but exposing their brain, and then looked at recovery with and without lithium. Early signs have been positive.

‘‘The discovery process is so exciting,’’ Ramsay says. ‘‘When you fi nd something no one else has seen before and it connects two things together ... that’s fantastic.’’

Ramsay is quick to point out that his work connects with a network of dozens of laboratories around the world pulling together to tackle cancer.

In many ways, as a researcher, he relies on the feedback of his clinical colleagues to gauge successful outcomes and work on new treatment possibilities.

Out in the fi eld, so to speak, at places such as Peter Mac’s new site in the west, the Sunshine Hosptial Radiation Centre in partnership with Western Health, is where Ramsay says many decades of research bear fruit.

‘‘The west has a huge cancer burden,’’ he says. ‘‘What Sunshine does is help deliver treatment and radiation therapy that’s part of the central pillars of the treatment we use.’’

On a Monday afternoon, we meet Andrew Conolly, a patient undergoing radiation treatment for a brain tumour. The Bacchus Marsh resident was diagnosed in January, initially believing his symptoms to be a result of depression.

Ramsay meets Conolly and listens to his story. ‘‘It sobers your thinking,’’ he sums up. ‘‘It’s one thing to focus on your animal models and theory, but when you deal with a human being who’s actually articulate and interested in what I’m trying to do ... it’s sort of invigorating.’’

Conolly, 56, was in Sydney when he realised something wasn’t right. Flown back to Melbourne, he underwent several tests before the tumour was revealed.

‘‘I cried,’’ he says of the diagnosis. His partner Ruth, constantly by his side, interjects: ‘‘The fi rst

thing Andrew said is “thank god it’s not my mind’’, alluding to his fear of ‘‘losing his marbles’’.

Conolly underwent an operation to remove the tumour on January 19 , surgeons cutting out as much of the brain as possible without causing irreparable damage.

A scar around his skull is clearly evident. ‘‘I actually felt fantastic. My brain was working well,’’ Conolly recalls of his feelings immediately after the operation.

The healing process then began, followed by courses of radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

The radiation treatment involves two-minute ‘‘zaps’’ at the Sunshine site.

Doctors have cautiously given him a year-and-a-half to live. ‘‘I have a sensation that my process and the way I’ve been responding to what’s been done to me has been quite good,” Conolly says. “So I think maybe a bit longer – maybe three.

‘‘But at the end of the day you have to plan to do everything you want to do in the year-and-a-half.’’

Conolly has chosen to tell his story in the hope of raising awareness and helping others going through the same struggles.

‘‘I think people should know about it, they should be aware. Most people who are older suffer it and they don’t really share any news. They come and go. I felt that I was lucky. It’s such an impactful thing on people’s lives.’’

Conolly is quick to acknowledge Ruth’s support and the need for family support.

‘‘You need a partner. You need someone who works through it with you,’’ he says.

‘‘You can still do a lot of things but not everything. We don’t know if I’ll be able to do all those things later because I’m still in the treatment process.’’

Conolly will undergo further chemotherapy in coming weeks and will then have a better idea of where his future lies.

In the meantime, he has adopted a new approach to life as a result of the tumour . He says his fate has helped him reunite with his four children.

‘‘I’ve had issues with kids at a range of times. That’s all been undone now and it’s fantastic. Out of the whole process, the ability to go back to family and forget everything else has been great.

‘‘In one sense I wouldn’t care if I croaked early as a result of it [cancer] because it actually brought back my family.’’

Ramsay is well aware that patients like Conolly line the hallways of hospitals around the country, and the outcome isn’t always positive.

But he genuinely loves what he does and says his greatest reward now comes from taking something he has discovered in the lab and convincing his clinical colleagues that it has merit and may improve a patient’s outcome.

‘‘I think that last part of the journey isn’t always horrible. Sometimes people fi nd it an enlightening experience. I wouldn’t say it’s a great experience; it couldn’t possibly be,’’ Ramsay says.

‘‘People die of all sorts of things. You want to make sure they die with dignity, without pain ... you know you’ve given it your best shot.’’ ■

Welcome to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in East Melbourne, Australia’s only public hospital dedicated to beating cancer.

Professor Rob Ramsay, head of cancer biology, is stationed on

the third fl oor of the building in an unassuming lab where he leads a research group fi xed on investigating cancer. ‘‘We’ve got no confusion about what we’re doing. We’re an organisation dedicated to looking after people with cancer and their families,’’ Ramsay says of his employer. ‘‘We’ve got one mission: cancer research.’’

One of his team’s latest projects surrounds the treatment of radiation therapy in people with brain tumours and looking at the signifi cant loss of neurogenesis – the body’s ability to regenerate nervous tissue – which can cause loss of cognitive function, including learning and short-term memory.

Ramsay says the natural process of tissues expanding rapidly and replacing themselves can be ‘‘hijacked’’ by cancer.

‘‘So when you treat a patient with cranial radiation you knock that process down amazingly fast. It’s very sensitive. The problem is that we need those cells to recover. Because if [they] don’t you lose your cognitive function, you don’t remember things.’’

Ramsay and his research team have been focusing on fi nding ways to cure primary cancer with the least amount of collateral damage.

‘‘The idea is that we try and do more damage to the tumour cells than to the local cells and normal cells. This is one of the greatest challenges of radiation treatment. You want to get the biggest bang for your buck without doing too much damage.’’

This particular area of cancer research intrigued him because a lot of treatment in the past had focused on curing the disease and not worrying about the aftermath.

‘‘You move from the traditional approaches: we’ll cure the cancer at any cost. That’s a great outcome, but now we look at the whole journey – survivorship.

‘‘What you don’t want to do with a patient is cure the disease but take away quality of life. And

Change your planMacedon Ranges Council wants to plonk uglychanging rooms at the corner of Beauchamp andWedge streets in Kyneton’s Barkly Square.

That would ruin the view of one of Kyneton’smost beautiful avenues and lovely Barkly Square,despite both having ‘heritage’ and ‘environmentalsignificance’ overlays to protect their specialcharacter. It would be environmental vandalism ifthe council goes ahead with this ill-conceived plan.Instead, a pavilion should be built for the soccerclub to replace the existing ugly hodge-podge ofdilapidated lavatories and change sheds that theshire’s own consultants have said should be rebuilt.This is where the club said it would prefer the newchanging rooms to be sited. It is where the Friendsof Barkly Square say the building should be.

Hopefully, the council will show common senseand respect for community feeling and re-site theproposed building where the community wants it.

council is borrowing $6.2 million next year. Butyou probably don’t know the council is borrowinganother $4 million the year after, taking the debtfrom about $4 million today to $14 million by2015-16. Debt will be capped at $14 million overthe next 10 years, with 7 per cent annual ratesrevenue rises.

SAFETY improvements on Bulla Road remainfirst on Hume Council’s road funding wishlist.

At last Monday’s meeting, a council officers’report on current, future and possible fundingfrom VicRoads and state and federal govern-ments was tabled.

It said duplicating Bulla Road was on top ofthe list of projects, with the potential of a Bullabypass being built.

The bypass, as part of a bigger Outer Metro-politan Ring Road project, would relievepressure on people travelling between Sunburyand Melbourne Airport.

VicRoads figures show that between July 2007and June 2012, there were 60 crashes on BullaRoad, including one death.

Last month, two women died in an accident,which led to councillors’ calls for upgrades toBulla Road and for work to begin on the bypass.

The Rotary Club of Sunbury has donated $1000 to the Goonawarra Golf Club to foster and support

junior golf. About 80 players, including Rotarians Robert Iles and Bruce Bouch and Goonawarra club

captain Stan McPherson (pictured, front), attended the annual golf day and raised $4500 for Rotary’s

youth, sport and recreation fund. Mr Iles, Rotary president, said the fund had been established to

promote sport in the region. ‘‘In recent years the fund has supported a disabled equestrian rider in her

attempt to qualify for the Olympics, a world champion speed stacker and a number of young

footballers. And the fund provides scholarships for the duxes of the three secondary schools in

SUNBURY as a whole is suffering because of alack of funding to fix maintenance problems atSunbury College, according to principal StephenSmith.

Mr Smith told Opposition leader DanielAndrews and Macedon MP Joanne Duncanduring their visit last Tuesday the school, whichhas more than 1000 students, could be a placethe community used if given the opportunity.

‘‘There’s a lack of facilities in the town ingeneral,’’ Mr Smith said. ‘‘There’s no arts centreand we can’t hold a whole-school performance.

‘‘We get good marks with the facilities we have.Imagine what we could get with modern facilities.’’

Mr Smith said the school welcomed $363,243it received last month from the state governmentfor maintenance funding, but it was only a Band-Aid solution.

He said most of the money was to restumpbuildings, which he thought was done when theschool received $5 million for upgrades in 2003.

As previously reported in the Weekly, theschool’s science building, built in 1964, haswindows nailed together and the floor is uneven.

‘‘New buildings will cost less than renovationsin the long term,’’ Mr Smith said.

He said he would love to cater for moreacademically challenged students, but the schooldid not have the facilities to run VictorianCertificate of Applied Learning and VocationalEducation and Training classes.

Mr Andrews said the maintenance fundingallocated by the government wasn’t enough.

‘‘Teachers and parents have no idea what’shappening,’’ he said.

‘‘There’s no master plan and no idea when they[the government] will get around to developing itand improving schools.’’

Authorisation A02295The Hume City Council has prepared Amendment C164 to the Hume Planning Scheme.

In accordance with section 8A(3) of the Planning and Environment Act 1987, the Minister for Planning authorised the Hume City Council as planning authority to prepare the amendment.

The land affected by the amendment is 275 Racecourse Road, Sunbury, known as Lot B on Plan of Subdivision 116962.

The amendment proposes to rezone the land from Farming Zone Schedule 3 (FZ3) to Residential 1 Zone (R1Z), Business 1 Zone (B1Z) (including a revised Schedule 1) and Public Park and Recreation Zone (PPRZ). It is also proposed to apply a Development Plan Overlay over the land and introduce a new Schedule 27 to the Development Plan Overlay.

You may inspect the amendment, any documents that support the amendment and the explanatory report about the amendment, free of charge, at the following locations:

Dogs show it’sStorm in teacupGISBORNE’S stuttering start to theBendigo Football League season isbeing fast forgotten as the Bulldogsbecame the first team to beat Strath-fieldsaye at the weekend.

The 15.14 (104) to 14.10 (94) awaywin put Gisborne (4-2, third) ahead ofthe win-loss count for the first timethis campaign.

The Bulldogs were ferocious in theattack at the contest as they controlledmost of the first half and then with-stood a spirited fightback by Storm.

Key defender Anthony Belcher wassuperb in the air and at ground level,Casey Summerfield and Patrick Fitz-gerald were in and under at a lot ofpacks, while Tom May, DarrenFarrugia and Matt Knox each kickedthree goals.

In a match where many contributed,Fitzgerald said Belcher’s and May’splay was outstanding.

A HALF-time spray from coachRandy Pereira was the spark MeltonCentrals needed to overcome Sunburyby 16 points in the top-of-the-tableRiddell District Netball League clash.

With his team trailing 18-22 at half-time, Pereira was ‘‘spitting chips’’ andmade sure he let his players know. Itworked, and the Centrals outscoredtheir opponents in the second half towin 46-30. Renee Hulls (26) andRebecca Morabito (20) did the scoringfor Melton, while Sunbury’s KilaElavo hit 21 points.

‘‘We were playing ordinary netball

in the first half,’’ Pereira said. ‘‘It wasthe first time I’ve lost my temper andtold them a few truths. They respon-ded in the right way and to keep themto eight goals in the second half was areally good effort by our defenders.’’

STAR forward Barry Hall is unavailable forRiddell District’s clash with Kyabram District onSaturday.

The loss of the former St Kilda and SydneySwans star because of prior commitments is ablow to the RDFL, although coach Matt Power isconfident the team will make a statement in itsreturn to the Victoria country championships.

Despite Hall’s absence, the star-studded squad

still has firepower, with four of the competition’sleading goalkickers — Adam Fenton (MeltonCentrals), Mathew Davidson (Romsey), JohnBaker (Lancefield) and Leigh Brennan (Ruperts-wood) — all included.

Thirteen of the starting 18 in last year’s RDFL‘team of the year’ were selected, including full-back Daniel Gregory (Sunbury) and DiggersRest’s John Ryan.

The squad will be cut from 60 to 22 ahead ofthe final training session at Sunbury on Thursday.

‘‘We have a strong squad and we trainedstrongly last Wednesday,’’ Power said.

‘‘Everyone has been impressing on the track.That’s easier than it is on game day, but it’s been astrong start and we have a very even group.’’

Power said the move back into country repre-sentative football was a big positive for theRiddell league.

‘‘When we moved to metro it seemed there wasnot as much interest in it [representative foot-ball],’’ he said. ‘‘Now there’s more enthusiasm.

‘‘We’re a league on the improve. We’re slowlyrebuilding and we get a chance to prove ourselveson Saturday.

‘‘I think we can quite comfortably take onother country leagues. We’ll pick the best 22 forthe game against Kyabram from the best playersavailable.’’

The KDFL squad includes the likes of formerFitzroy and North Melbourne player AnthonyMellington and one-time AFL prospect AshHockey.

THE Kangaroos won by 18 points,but fans of both Melton Centrals andSunbury walked away fromMacPherson Park reasonably happyon Saturday.

It was Melton’s third consecutiveloss after a 4-0 start to the year, but theBlues never looked out of the contestuntil late in the match.

Sunbury, as so often in recent years,found another level that its opponentcouldn’t quite match.

Leading by 12 at the final break, theKangaroos kicked the only goal of anintense final term through MitchStreiff to take the points 12-14(86)-10.8 (68).

But it was Centrals, desperate to hitback after a 12-point loss to Lance-field the previous week, who got theearly jump and held a five-point leadat quarter-time.

Against an opponent many expectto be playing off for back-to-backpremierships, Melton moved the ballwith precision and pace to prove theirbest can match it with the league’sbest. But maintaining that over fourquarters has proved to be a challenge,as capitulations against Romsey andLancefield showed.

Much credit must also be given tothe Kangaroos. While the team is stillnot at full strength — coach ChrisMeacham pulled on the boots againand was a popular target up forward— it still has enough class to lift whenneeded. It’s no surprise that nine oftheir players were selected in the theinitial interleague squad.

Streiff was terrific, as was DanielGregory down back — Melton’spower forward Adam Fenton was keptto just three goals — and the likes ofTierone Cuffe and Tom Borg.

Meacham said his team would be atfull strength for the round seven clashwith Lancefield.

‘‘When you come to Melton and

walk away with a win you’ve donewell; it doesn’t matter how you win,’’he said. ‘‘I’ve been impressed withsome of the kids we’ve brought up thelast couple of weeks with players out.

‘‘We’ll rest up with interleague thisweek, come back against Lancefieldand then wait for the Romseys andRiddells to come at us.’’

Centrals coach Brian Wheelahansaid he was pleased with his side’seffort.

‘‘I thought our endeavour for about90 per cent of the game was terrific,’’he said.’’

Barry Hall kicked eight for Broad-ford in a 73-point loss to Ruperts-wood; Rockbank lost by seven pointsto Wallan; Riddell beat Lancefield by59; Romsey destroyed Kilmore by128; and Diggers Rest beat Macedonby 48.

BALLARAT Football League’s under-18s peppered the goals to pull awayfrom the Riddell District league atEastern Oval on Wednesday night.

While the netball clashes betweenthe leagues were wiped out by badweather, there would be no stoppingthe Ballarat league who led at everychange in the 14.16 (100) to 5.4 (34)victory.

Ballarat kicked inaccurately in thefirst half but still led by 18, 39 and 65points at each of the intervals.

The under-18s now head into theirweekend showdowns, with the Bal-larat league taking on Bendigo andRiddell’s league taking on KyabramDistrict. The netball clashes betweenseniors and under-17s will be resched-uled for a later date.

CALDER Cannons pushed the TAC Cup yard-stick but ultimately came up short on Saturdaywith a 30-point loss against Geelong Falcons atHighgate Reserve.

The Cannons closed a 20-point deficit at three-quarter-time with the first three goals of the lastquarter, but Geelong kicked away again to win14.11 (95) to 10.5 (65).

Defeat leaves the Cannons with three wins andfour losses for the season heading into a breakuntil June 1 caused by Vic Metro’s opening round

of the under-18 national championships.Cannons coach Andrew Jago said Geelong

were the better team and his own side couldn’tmaintain the intensity required to match them.

“Geelong are a well-drilled, classy unit and ifyou give them time and space they use the ballwell. They’re a really good mix; give them theirdues.

“If you apply enough pressure for long enoughyou can hassle, but you’ve got to be able tosustain it. I would suggest that every time we gotclose they had an extra gear; we never headedthem.”

Geelong led by seven points at half-time beforekicking away with four goals to two in the thirdterm.

Jago said attitude was the key to matchingGeelong’s ability.

Jarryd Bonello was the Cannons’ only multiplegoal-kicker, while Paul Ahern played around thecentre square along with time in the forward lineas the team’s stand-out player.

Lions steal the game before Burras realise it’s startedAN amazing 11-goal first-termonslaught handed Sunbury a whop-ping 109-point victory againstSebastopol at Marty Busch Reserve inBallarat Football League on Saturday.

The Lions showed their true classagainst the young Burras, dominatingout of the centre and presenting theirforwards with gold-class service.

Jamie Lobb was sensational for thevisitors as was captain Jay Cheep, wholed by example all day.

First-gamer Dwain Sandersonshowed good signs. He’s one of ahandful of youngsters to debut for theLions this year.

The victory was somewhat soured,however, with Allan O’Connor suffer-ing a potentially season-ending

shoulder injury. Coach Rick Horwoodsaid: “It just puts a bit of a sour noteon a good win. We will just have towait for the scans to come back toknow how bad it is.

“To come out and kick 11 goals inthe first quarter, though, just showedwe are always ready to play regardlessof the opposition.”

Horwood had good things to sayabout the opposition, which battledhard after quarter-time.

“They had some good patches ofplay and are a young side.’’

The Lions began the match in a fero-cious manner, kicking the first fivegoals in a nine-minute burst, essen-tially taking the match away fromSebastopol.

Sunbury’s ability to burst away withpace and precision kicking was a hall-mark of its performance.

And as goal after goal sailedthrough at the scoreboard end, thematch slipped further away from theBurras, who were behind by 71 pointsat the first break.

Sunbury kicked the opening twogoals of the term, and the scorelinelooked like getting ugly for the homeside until the Burras managed to stemthe bleeding, holding their own for therest of the term.

The resistance died out somewhat inthe second half as the youngSebastopol players tired in the wetconditions.

The Lions continued on their merry

way, kicking a further 13 goals toseven to cruise to an impressive109-point victory.

O’Connor is yet to have scans toassess the extent of his injury, but wasalready fearing the worst.

Horwood said the injury came as ahuge blow for O’Connor and thewhole team.

“You’ve got to feel for the bloke. Hedid all the work and to go down likethat makes everyone feel down a bit.”

Sunbury’s next assignment isBacchus Marsh on June 1. FormerCarlton and Brisbane Lions spearheadBrendan Fevola will play for theCobras at Maddingley Park.

In A grade netball, Sunbury easilyaccounted for Sebastopol, leading

start to finish and winning by33 goals. Goaler Sophie O’Kane wasthe Lions’ best with 24 goals, whilefellow shooter Michelle Robertsonnetted 36. Other leading players forthe Lions were Hayley Mackie andRebecca Moffat.

The win keeps Sunbury (4-1-1)second on the table with 18 points,behind Meltonand North BallaratCity (both 20 points).

Interleague this weekend pits theBallarat Football League against theBendigo Football League in a battle offifth against sixth in the VCFL rank-ings.

The match at Eastern Oval in Bal-larat starts at 2.15pm on Saturday.
