North American Wood Pellet Exports Hit New Record Volume in 2012.

Exports of wood pellets from both Canada and the USA hit new all-time record volumes in 2012, up 40% from

2011. Although there are still some problems with reporting statistics, we estimate that in 2012 Canada exported

nearly 1.4 million tonnes of wood pellets and the USA exported over 1.9 million tonnes. The vast majority of

Canadian exports are from British Columbia to Europe, although a small volume of about 100,000 tonnes was

exported to Japan. Exports from the USA are from a number of large producers in the US South, including

Georgia Biomass (RWE), Green Circle Bioenergy, FRAM and Enviva.

The most striking announcement came in mid-December when Drax, a UK power company, stated its intention

to build two 450,000 tonnes pellet plants, one in the state of Louisiana and one in Mississippi. Most other export

oriented pellet plants, while invested in by European utilities, are separate US-based entities, with supply

agreements and MOU ’ s defining the business relationship.

The three major European pellet import countries remain the UK, the Netherlands, and Belgium, while Italy,

Denmark and Sweden are notably involved in pellet imports from North America, but on a much smaller scale.

Denmark ’ s Dong Energy utility, however, announced its intentions to switch to woody biomass at three of its

coal plants, an action likely to add demand from the US Southeast.

Announced US South pellet export plants increased sharply in the 2nd half of 2012. Export pellet

facilities, which are under construction, conversion or redesigned will add an additional 1.7 million tons of

capacity during 2013, as reported in the North American Wood Fiber Review (www.wri-ltd.com). In addition to

these plants that are already under construction, five more large new plants have been announced, and if they

are actually built on the disclosed sites, they would bring another 2.3 million tons of capacity into play by the end

of 2014.

The rapidly developing international trade in biomass will be a focus of discussion at the upcoming

International Woodfibre Resources and Trade Conference, to be held April 8-10, 2013 in Istanbul,

Turkey.

* Christian Rakos, President of the European Pellets Council, will talk about the outlook for development of

the wood pellet markets in Europe.

* Bob Flynn, of RISI, will talk about woodchip and wood pellet exports from North America, and

* Kiyoshi Kamikawa of the Japan Paper Association will talk about the markets for woodchips and biomass

in Japan.

There will also be a panel discussion on dedicated biomass plantation development and investment, which will

include Jeff Nuss, CEO of Greenwood Resources; Michael Weitz, MD of Lignovis GmbH; and Joao Cordeiro,

Principal, Pöyry Management Consulting.
