GOD’S GIFT FO R GIFTING

August 21st $ 6, 291. 00Last Year $ 6, 653. 16

In Dickens’ novel David Copperfield,Uriah Keep, “a very humble man,”projected a false humility. For many, humilityis expressed in belittling oneself and finding ithard to accept the compliments of others.

This false humility does not allow them to act in full accord withthe gifts God has given them. This is not the humility to whichJesus invites us in this Sunday’s gospel. When Jesus says inthe parable to take the “lowest place,” he is not speakingliterally but metaphorically. He is teaching us that taking ourrightful place is an invitation and gift given to us, not somethingwe choose. Humility is the virtue of accepting our gifts andrejoicing in them as God’s blessings to be put at the service ofthose with whom we “recline at table. ”The crowd is carefullyobserving Jesus. What do we learn if we carefully observehim? In humility, Jesus abandoned the exaltation of heaven forthe earthliness of living among us. In humility, Jesus reachedout to the poor, the women, the sick and maimed and theoutcasts. In humility, he freely gave his life for us. In humility,we treat others with respect and dignity. In humility, we reachout to those who are exhausted, left out and sick. In humility,we give ourselves over for the good of others.

FAITH AT HOMEIn today’s Gospel Jesus tells us that those who exaltthemselves will be humbled and those who humble

themselves will be exalted. Take time this week to examineyour conscience for the sin of pride. Adults: In what ways do Ipractice the virtue of humility? How might I be more humblein the coming week? Children: What can I do to make othersfeel valued and welcome during the coming week? Parentsand children enter into “negotiations” over how muchallowance is to be earned at certain ages. Typically, when achild seeks an increase in allowance, parents will attach anincrease in chores and responsibilities for them to better earnthe increase. Explain that in this Sunday’s Gospel. Jesus talksabout doing good deeds for others and expecting nothing inreturn. Read aloud Luke 14:1,7-14. Ask your children how theywould feel if you told them to take on more chores withoutever expecting another raise in allowance. Emphasize thatJesus teaches us that it is our duty as his followers Enjoy you week! Lisa

up-to-date on recommended vaccines. Each year, therecommended vaccine schedule is determined by an expertpanel of top disease experts and doctors, based on scientificdata. It is approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics, theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention and the AmericanAcademy of Family Physicians. The schedule is designed toprotect people of all ages against those diseases to which theymay be most vulnerable. Immunizations given in infancy andchildhood may require booster doses throughout life. Othervaccines are recommended for specific populations, such ascollege students or military personnel. Your physician canadvise you about which vaccines are most appropriate for youand your family members. Consider immunization review part ofyour back to school checklist.
