Thanksgiving for Baptism

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation.C: Amen.

P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.C: We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight.

P: Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all.

C: We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love.

NARRATIVE READING Hebrews 9: 1-14

1Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. 2For a tent was constructed, the first one, in which were the lamp stand, the table, and the bread of the Presence this is called the Holy Place. 3Behind the second curtain was a tent called the Holy of Holies. 4In it stood

the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which there were a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant; 5above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot speak now in detail.6Such preparations having been made, the priests go continually into the first tent to carry out their ritual duties;7but

only the high priest goes into the second, and he but once a year, and not without taking the blood that he offers for himself and for the sins committed unintentionally by the people. 8By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the sanctuary has not yet been disclosed as long as the first tent is still standing. 9This is a symbol of the present time, during which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 10but deal only with food and drink and various

baptisms, regulations for the body imposed until the time comes to set things right.11But when Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation),12he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. 13For if the blood of goats and bulls, with the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those

who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified,14how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God!

HEALING P: Our Lord Jesus healed many as a sign of the reign of God's kingdom come near and sent the disciples to continue this work of healing—with prayer, the laying on of hands, and anointing. In the name of Christ, the great healer and reconciler of the world, we now entrust to God all who are in need of healing. Sisters and brothers, I invite you to come and receive a sign of healing and wholeness in the name of the triune God.

(Assembly comes forward to receive the anointing and laying on of hands.) L: Receive this oil as a sign of forgiveness and healing in the reign of Jesus Christ. C: Amen.

PRAYER FOR HEALING L: Let us pray. Living God, C: Through the laying on of hands and anointing, grant comfort in suffering to all who are in need of healing. When they are afraid, give them courage; when afflicted, give them patience; when dejected, give them hope; and when alone, assure them of the support of your holy people. We ask this through Christ. Amen.

As we work, in our studies or at our jobs, bless us with: eagerness to learn, that our world may grow large; respect for teachers and students, that we may form healthy relationships; a sense of vocation, that

Owe may do what we are called to do by your Spirit; happiness when learning or work is easy and stick-to-it-iveness when it is hard; faith in Jesus as our best guide and closest friend. We ask that you would protect us, your own children. Watch over us and keep us safe as we travel to and from school or work. As we learn and work, help us also to discover the different gifts that you have given each one of us to be used in your work in the world. As we hear the many voices that will fill our days,

help us to listen most carefully for your voice, the one that tells us you will love us always, no matter what. We ask this in Jesus' name.Amen.
