NARRATIVE READING Hebrews 9: 1-14

1Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. 2For a tent was constructed, the first one, in which were the lamp stand, the table, and the bread of the Presence this is called the Holy Place. 3Behind the second curtain was a tent called the Holy of Holies. 4In it stood

Page 16: Sunday, August 30, 2015 The Last Sacrifice Service of Healing

the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which there were a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant; 5above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot speak now in detail.6Such preparations having been made, the priests go continually into the first tent to carry out their ritual duties;7but

Page 17: Sunday, August 30, 2015 The Last Sacrifice Service of Healing

only the high priest goes into the second, and he but once a year, and not without taking the blood that he offers for himself and for the sins committed unintentionally by the people. 8By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the sanctuary has not yet been disclosed as long as the first tent is still standing. 9This is a symbol of the present time, during which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 10but deal only with food and drink and various

Page 18: Sunday, August 30, 2015 The Last Sacrifice Service of Healing

baptisms, regulations for the body imposed until the time comes to set things right.11But when Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation),12he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. 13For if the blood of goats and bulls, with the sprinkling of the ashes of a heifer, sanctifies those

Page 19: Sunday, August 30, 2015 The Last Sacrifice Service of Healing

who have been defiled so that their flesh is purified,14how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God!

L: Word of God, word of life.C: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 15

L: 1 LORD, who may dwell in your tabernacle? Who may abide upon your holy hill?C: 2 Those who lead a blameless life and do what is right, who speak the truth from their heart;L: 3 they do not slander with the tongue, they do no evil to their friends; they do not cast discredit upon a neighbor.

Page 21: Sunday, August 30, 2015 The Last Sacrifice Service of Healing

C: 4 In their sight the wicked are rejected, but they honor those who fear the LORD. They have sworn upon their health and do not take back their word.

L: 5 They do not give their money in hope of gain, nor do they take bribes against the innocent. Those who do these things shall never be overthrown.

Gospel:Mark 12: 28-34

P: The holy gospel according to Mark.C: Glory to you, O Lord.28One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, "Which commandment is the first of all?"29Jesus answered, "The

Page 24: Sunday, August 30, 2015 The Last Sacrifice Service of Healing

first is, 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one;30you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.'31The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these.“32Then the scribe said to him, "You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that 'he is one, and besides him there is no other';33and 'to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with

Page 25: Sunday, August 30, 2015 The Last Sacrifice Service of Healing

all the strength,' and 'to love one's neighbor as oneself,' — this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."34When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." After that no one dared to ask him any question. P: The gospel of the Lord.C: Praise to you, O Christ.

CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he

ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYERGathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS Mark 10:13–16 13 People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. 14But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 15Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." 16And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

Page 50: Sunday, August 30, 2015 The Last Sacrifice Service of Healing

OP: Dear God, as we start another year in school, and begin another season of work or leisure, we ask your blessing on these backpacks, briefcases, cell phones, laptops, handbags, toolkits, suitcases, saddle bags, and especially on all these who will wear them. As we work, in our studies or at our jobs, bless us with: eagerness to learn, that our world may grow large; respect for teachers and students, that we may form healthy relationships; a sense of vocation, that

Page 51: Sunday, August 30, 2015 The Last Sacrifice Service of Healing

Owe may do what we are called to do by your Spirit; happiness when learning or work is easy and stick-to-it-iveness when it is hard; faith in Jesus as our best guide and closest friend. We ask that you would protect us, your own children. Watch over us and keep us safe as we travel to and from school or work. As we learn and work, help us also to discover the different gifts that you have given each one of us to be used in your work in the world. As we hear the many voices that will fill our days,

Page 52: Sunday, August 30, 2015 The Last Sacrifice Service of Healing

help us to listen most carefully for your voice, the one that tells us you will love us always, no matter what. We ask this in Jesus' name.Amen.
