FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

In the winter of 1531, a poor, 57-year-old Aztec Indian living outside of Mexico

City encountered a miraculous happening on his way to morning Mass. He heard

music coming from Tepeyac Hill, and then he heard a woman’s voice calling his

name. Juan Diego climbed the hill and encountered a young woman, dressed like

his own people. The woman identified herself as the Virgin Mary, and told Juan

Diego to ask the bishop of Mexico City to build a church on the hill. Juan Diego

obeyed the request, but the bishop was skeptical. Juan reported the bishop’s

doubt to Our Lady at Tepeyac Hill, and she asked him to return to the bishop once

again. The bishop once again heard the story, and told Juan Diego to ask Our Lady

for a sign.

When he returned to the hill, Mary gave Juan Diego such a sign. Miraculously,

roses appeared on the hill in the middle of winter. Our Lady arranged the roses

in his tilma with her own hands, and Juan returned to the bishop. When Juan

released the tilma, allowing the flowers to fall to the floor, it was revealed that

a miraculous image of Our Lady had imprinted itself on his tilma. The bishop

immediately fell to his knees, and came to believe in Juan Diego’s message. A

church was built on the spot of the apparition, as Mary had requested, and 8

million people converted to Catholicism in a short period of time upon hearing of

or viewing the miraculous image of Our Lady.

The tilma of Juan Diego has been the subject of much modern research. The tilma,

woven out of coarse cactus fiber, should have disintegrated after 20 years, but

although over 500 years have passed the tilma is still in perfect condition. No paint

was used, and chemical analysis has not been able to identify the color imprint.

Additionally, studies have revealed that the stars on Mary’s mantle match exactly

what a Mexican would have seen in the sky in December of 1531.

his Heart your every word, when you ask something of Him, He always

hears your prayer.

PARISH CLEAN UP & CHRISTMAS DECORATING

It’s not too late to join our study on Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom. It will help you to see your place in the Church as a disciple of Christ. We have completed 8 of the 20 sessions, so begin your New Year with a purpose. Review and outlines for the first sessions will be available.

Acts is the story of how a few Christians, empowered by the Holy Spirit, were chosen to bring Christ and the Good News to the ends of the earth. They faced secular forces, internal strife, and hostile crowds, and despite all of this, they brought the kingdom of God to a broken world and the love of God to the hearts of men.

Presenter Jeff Cavins shows how the joys and struggles of the early Christians in living the life of Christ apply to us today.

All are welcome. Please contact Marsha Slick at [email protected] or 904-395-3638 to register or for more information.

THE WORLDWIDE CANDLE LIGHTING FOR CHILDREN OF ANY AGE WHO HAVE DIEDThe Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting

unites family and friends around the globe in lighting candles

for one hour to honor the memories of the sons, daughters,

brothers, sisters, and grandchildren who have died.

As candles are lit on December 12th, 2021 at 7:00 pm local

time, hundreds of thousands of people commemorate and

honor the memory of all children who have died.

Now believed to be the largest candle lighting in the world,

the annual Candle Lighting, creates a virtual 24-hour wave

of light as it moves from time zone to time zone. Hundreds

of formal candle lighting events are held, and thousands of

informal candle lightings are conducted in homes, as families

gather in quiet remembrance of children who have died and

will never be forgotten.
