A9ing to use their skills in pursuit ofaddressing a particular commu-nity need, whether it be in socialservices, education, health care orthe arts.

Mary Alice McKenzie, executivedirector of the Boys & Girls Club ofBurlington, made the transition her-self from the for-profit world to thenonprofit world. She was presidentof McKenzie of Vermont, her fam-ily’s meat business founded in 1907,from 1989 to 2000. Before that, shepracticed law in Chicago in the Il-linois State’s Attorney’s Office. Afterleaving McKenzie, she was generalcounsel for Vermont State Collegesbefore joining the private law firm ofPaul Frank & Collins PC.

At Paul Frank & Collins, McKenzierealized she missed the mission-based focus of her previous jobs.

“I hadn’t realized how importantthat focus was to me,” McKenziesaid. “I was doing employment lawand I really liked that, and I reallyliked and respected the attorneysat Paul Frank & Collins, but privatepractice of law was just not a good

fit for me.”A partner at Paul Frank & Collinsserved on the board of the Boys &Girls Club and encouraged McKen-zie to apply to be its new executivedirector.

“Running a nonprofit is very muchlike running a business,” McKenziesaid. “The Boys & Girls Club issmall, but we need all the disciplinesthat running a small business re-quires. The main things are finan-cial management, expense control, and training and development ofthe staff who work here – humanresources.”Paul Costello, executive directorof the Vermont Council on RuralDevelopment, said any nonprofit isan “entrepreneurial enterprise,” andthe nonprofit that forgets this risksfailure.

“If you’re not a lever for positivechange and you don’t provide adistinct return on investment, thenyou’re not going to find grant fundsin this competitive marketplace,”Costello said. “We don’t have a rightto exist; we exist because we demon-strate results.”

Johnstone said the one importantdifference to keep in mind whenconsidering working for a nonprofitis the passion factor.

“You have to believe in the mission,”Johnstone said. “For us, it’s loweringthe economic and environmentalcost of energy. If you don’t believein that, this is not a good place foryou to work. Folks wear the mis-sion on their sleeves. If you’re notcomfortable with that, it’s a prob-lem. Other than that, it’s exactly thesame.”

“YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IN THE MISSION”

Mary Alice McKenzie, executive director of theBoys & Girls Club of Bur-lington, faced this questionherself when she made thetransition from the for-profit to the nonprofit worldin 2007.

“I created my first resumeand then realized, ‘Oh, thislooks like I’m applying for abusiness-related position,’”McKenzie said. “So I startedover, and now that I receiveresumes, I can tell you Ilook for the same things Idid.”What does McKenzie lookfor?

• KNOW THE MISSION:First and foremost, a gen-eral statement that the pro-spective hire understandsthat nonprofits are driven bya mission.

“I notice those resumesthat right up front indicatethe person is interestedin working for a mission-driven organization,”McKenzie said. You don’thave to quote the missionof the Boys & Girls Club. Infact, you probably shouldn’ton your resume, you canhandle that in a cover let-ter. But you should make it

clear you know nonprofitsare driven by a mission, andyou’re on board with that.

• HIGHLIGHT YOURVOLUNTEERISM:

Gretchen Morse, executivedirector of the United Wayof Chittenden County for19 years, echoed McKen-zie’s remarks about mission, saying she first looks to seeif the applicant has the skillsshe needs, but then checkson whether they’ve volun-teered anywhere.

“If they volunteered for aboard, or in some kind ofposition of responsibilityon a volunteer basis in anonprofit organization, thatwill tell me whether there’san aptitude and interest inthe mission of the organiza-tion,” Morse said.

• JUST THE FACTS:McKenzie said she some-times gets resumes withlong narratives explainingwhy the person’s skills fromthe business world will workin the nonprofit world.“That’s not necessary forme, and it’s more work forme,” McKenzie said. “I wantto know what is their workhistory and educationalbackground.”

Let’s say you have your sights set onlanding a job at a nonprofit. Is thereanything you need to do to tweakyour resume?

Whether the economy reboundstomorrow or months from now, howyou look for a job probably won’tchange all that much.

Yes, more candidates are compet-ing for fewer positions today thanfive years ago, but that’s not a deathsentence for your job search. Yearafter year (even through the GreatRecession) employers complain thatthey can’t find qualified, skilledworkers for their available positions.Yet, qualified job seekers are outthere, but they aren’t finding the rightopportunities.

That’s why you must rememberthat the economy is only one of manyfactors affecting your search and it’sone you can’t control. Don’t let it dic-tate your entire job hunt. Instead, focus your energy on what’s withinyour power, such as locating opportu-nities that suit your skills and goals.Finding the right match will alreadyput you a step ahead of other jobseekers. You just need to know how tofind the right match.

Know your locationThe job markets in some regions

have fared better than others over thepast few years. In cities with highcosts of living, the local economiestook hits on all fronts. In more afford-able parts of the country, such as theSouthern states, your dollar goes fur-

ther and many economies weatheredthe recession better.

Consider relocationIf you’re able and willing to move

for a job, broaden your search toinclude the cities looking for yourskills. Examine the overall strengthof the industries in your region versusother locations. Relocation is neithereasy nor cheap, and not all compa-nies will cover the expense, but forsome people it is a plausible optionand can open up more opportunities.

Think about job, not the titleJob seekers, eager to find a dream

position, can become so focused onthe job they think they want that theydevelop tunnel vision. Never is thismore apparent than when they searchfor a job solely by title and ignore therole’s duties. Whether you’re search-ing on CareerBuilder.com, telling afriend what job you’re looking for, ornetworking, forget about titles.Remember, each organization has itsown job titles.

Look at your skills and at the dailyresponsibilities of the role you want.Imagine you have the job you want andthink how you would answer the ques-tion, “What do you do?” Once youknow that response, search using rele-vant keywords from this description.

Networking is a 3-D experienceThese conversations you have

when you network need to take placeonline and off, a fact often over-looked in this digital age. For onlinenetworking, the simplest way to getthe word out about your job searchthese days is to update your socialmedia profiles so that people knowyou’re open to new job possibilities.

But don’t stop there. Scrollthrough your contacts list andaddress book for any family and

friends who could point you toward ajob opportunity. They might work inthe industry you want, work at a com-pany you admire or just be well-con-nected.

Not sure where to start? Send an e-mail or a Facebook message if youare casual acquaintances. For con-tacts whom you’re closer to, pick upthe phone and call them.

After all, networking is about hav-ing a full conversation with thesepeople, not just giving them a salespitch on your résumé.They might nothave an opportunity right now, butyou’ll be the first person they think ofwhen they hear about a position.

Above all else, be generous toother job seekers in return. If you canhelp out a job seeker by suggesting aposition, setting up an interview, orgiving tips from your own search, doit. Job seekers need all the supportthey can get. Plus, if job-searchkarma exists, you want to be on itsgood side.

Anthony Balderrama is a writerand blogger for CareerBuilder.comand its job blog, The Work Buzz(www.TheWorkBuzz.com). Heresearches and writes about jobsearch strategy, career management, hiring trends and workplace issues.

Keep focuson locatingbest match

Job seekers should use as many tools as possible – networking, newspaper adsand online ads – in their search for opportunities that match their skills and goals.
