STEPHEN MINISTERS: The After People People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the After People. Stephen Ministers are there:

...after the phone call you hoped you’d never get.

...after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.

...after the relationship falls apart and the bottom falls out of your life.

...after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”

...after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, “Welcome to your new home.”

...after the last child honks the horn, waves and drives away—and the house suddenly seems empty.

...after the gavel comes down, the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is led away.

...after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible.

...after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck.

...after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out. Stephen Ministers are the After People. They are ready to come alongside you—or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives—and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed.

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE BLACK HISTORY JEOPARDY — WITH A DETROIT NOD

This time, your Black History Quiz is about Detroit!

A. Born in the Dominican Republic, he was the first black ballplayer for the Detroit Tigers. In his home debut as a Tiger, on June 17, 1958, he batted five for five.

B. Because blacks were often denied treatment at Detroit’s medical institutions, this hospital, organized by a group of 30 African-American doctors, opened its doors in 1918 in a home on Frederick Street, which still stands today.

C. The Marvelettes, the Motown girl group from Inkster, rejected this Holland-Dozier-Holland song, so the Supremes recorded it in 1964, scoring their first No. 1 hit.

D. In the 1880s he became the first African-American elected to the Detroit City Council.

E. In 1972, she was the first African-American woman elected to the Detroit City Council.

F. Although she was born in New Orleans and brought up in California, this famous

soprano/mezzo-soprano taught at the University of Michigan and lived in Ann Arbor from 1996 until her death in November, 2014.

G. In 1925, this black gynecologist moved with his family into a white neighborhood on Garland street, on Detroit’s east side. A white mob assembled outside the house and shots were fired from within, killing one man and wounding another. Defended by noted lawyer Clarence Darrow, the doctor was acquitted.

H. Although this famous inventor was born in Canada in the 1840s, he lived in Detroit (Lincoln Avenue) and is buried in Warren.

I. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Detroit in 1963, delivering an early version of his “I Have a Dream” speech at Cobo Hall. Five years later (and three weeks before he was assassinated) he spoke at this high school in a Detroit suburb.

J. In 1949, this social club was

formed for professional African-Americans.

K. This civil rights advocate moved to Detroit in 1957.

L. It wasn't until 1967 that Detroit had its first black TV anchor, who worked at what was then WWJ/Channel 4.

M. These two famous abolitionists met at a Detroit home in 1859.

N. In 1955, he became the first African-American from Michigan elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

O. In 1965, this medical doctor opened the International Afro-American Museum in his office on West Grand Boulevard.

P. In 1975, this station signed on from its studio on East Jefferson, becoming the first African-American-owned television station in the United States.
