Here are a few things to know about our church:

We believe in grace. We believe in the forgiving grace of God. We also believe in extending grace toward one another. That means that we can be authentic about who we are and the things about which we struggle. In a world that admires getting ahead, we believe Christ is the one who makes us whole. We are all equal in our need for him. There are many places in our church life where you can receive and extend grace - retreats, small groups, worship services, Sunday School classes, mission trips, ministry opportunities.

We love to study. We have several Bible Studies being taught both in the evenings and in the day time. Some are topical: others focus on a particular part of Scripture. You don’t need to be a member of our church to join any of our studies.

We love kids! We feel very strongly about providing for our children and youth everything they need to develop a strong faith and be equipped to face the world. Our children’s ministry uses a variety of ways to instill the Word of God into the heart of a child. It dramatically shapes a child's life and—it is just plain fun!

There is a place for you. It doesn’t matter where you have been or what you have done. You may feel far from God or closer than you have ever been. If you do not have a church home, we invite you to be a part of what God is doing in us and through us.

We thank you for visiting.

United Methodists have believed, from the beginning, that each of us is called to participate in the outreaching ministry of Jesus Christ. John Wesley described this work in simple, practical terms: “Do all the good you can, in all the places you can, to all the people you can.” Putting our faith into action is at the very heart of our Christian calling. By volunteering to serve through the many programs at Windcrest United Methodist Church, every person in the church has the opportunity to serve and live their calling more faithfully. Volunteers embody Christian love in action by bringing their diverse talents to mission programs, local outreach ministries, Children and Youth ministries, leading small groups, and many other ways here in the local church and the surrounding community. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t even have to make your subject and your verb agree….You only need a heart full of grace…a soul generated by love.” When we agree to serve, we are fulfilling one of the vows of membership we took when we joined the church. Remember? “To faithfully participate in the ministry of the church with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness.” As we continue to explore each month, what it means to be a member of Windcrest United Methodist Church and to live out our faith, we will look at all of the ways we make new disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. There are many ways and opportunities to serve offered right here at Windcrest Church. You may visit any of the tables/displays set up between services in the Gathering Place, or look through the kiosk in the middle of the room to find many ideas. If you don’t see something that you love, speak to one of our Pastors or to someone at the Connection Booth and they will help you discern the best fit for you. In the meantime, please pray for wisdom and guidance as you decide how and where to serve.

I. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us. - Marianne Williamson

II. Rouse us, Holy Spirit! Flash fire around us, and on us, and in us! Let your fires of justice burn in our hearts, a blaze across the lands, and a beacon for the long night that is coming and now is.

III. Pentecost is the fiftieth day of Easter. The earliest church in Jerusalem had completed forty days of ongoing teaching from the Risen Lord, followed by a ten-day prayer vigil after his ascension. On this day, the church began to move out in and by the power of the Holy Spirit.

IV. The doctrinal focus for today is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and reaffirmation of baptismal and membership vows. Don’t Let Human Beings Confuse your thought.

V. Let God influence your thoughts. Be God’ interpreter in the world.

VI. Renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of the world, and repent of their sin; some think this mention of sin and evil sounds judgmental and primitive, yet an emerging consensus insists that renouncing sin and evil is a foundational part of the church’s work. Baptismal rites ancient and modern include similar vows, some of them much more complex

VII. To and since I have accepted the freedom and power that God gives them to resist evil, injustice, an oppression;

VIII. I have learned to confess Jesus Christ as my personal Savior, put my whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as their Lord;

IX. Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us. - Marianne Williamson

Each session of confirmation, the Confirmands add a leaf or two to their

individual branched on the tree of faith. Each leaf tells something about

what they have learned or experienced in class.

We invite the congregation to be a part of our tree by filling out a leaf or

two with a word of encouragement, a prayer, or a favorite verse from the

bible, etc. Help us fill the tree of faith with an abundance of love and

strength.

You will find blank leaves located in a basket on the table in the

Gathering Place. Please fill them out and place them on the tree located

in the front of the Sanctuary. Pipe cleaners for hanging will be located

next to the basket. Do not place them on the branches that have a

different color of leaf hanging. Those are designated for the

Confirmands.

When we, the branches, abide in Christ, the vine, we are drawn into

god’s ongoing story. The story involves several people who are rooted in

Christ and who have branched out into the world, touching people with

God’s love and grace. Thank you for reaching out and touching the

Confirmands with your love and grace!

PLEASE STOP BY THE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN TABLE AND PICK UP A

FANTASY TEA PACKET TODAY!

The Fantasy Tea is a fundraiser that goes toward very important missions for many outreach programs and for some within our church. Thank you for your continued

support in helping us reach our goals.

Some may have noticed the upgrades to the flower beds, trees trimmed, rain gutters cleaned, classroom doors painted on the McClung Building, playground equipment repainted and cleaned up, windows washed, and much more! These improvements were some of the work done on the Trustee’s Church Work Day on Saturday, May 7. The following persons spent much or all of their Saturday working on projects to help keep our church campus looking fresh and clean. Thank you to everyone who came out and worked and thank you to Girl Scout Troop #245 for providing donuts, sandwiches and treats to all of the workers. Don’t worry if you missed this workday or were unable to come help out – there will be more scheduled really soon! Thanks bunches to:

WN Article-May 2016-Connection

Wesley Nurse: Dawn Gonzales, R.N.

I would like to say hello and to briefly mention the WN programing that is scheduled for the month of May. For the month of May, I will be offering a WN physical activity class called: “Chair Yoga for Adults” and I will also be offering a WN health education program on “Cholesterol & Triglycerides.” Both of these Wesley Nurse programs will

empower you with knowledge and activity to help you live a healthier life!

For more information about my Wesley Nurse programs, please see my monthly calendar of events that is posted on the Windcrest UMC website. Also, please also

feel free to reach out to me, if any questions.

May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month:

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. UV radiation can also come from tanning booths or sunlamps. The most dangerous kind of skin cancer is

called melanoma. The good news? Skin cancer can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to prevent skin cancer or detect it early on. Make a difference: Spread the

word about strategies for preventing skin cancer and encourage communities, organizations, families, and individuals to get involved.

How can Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month make a difference? We can use this month to raise awareness about skin cancer and help

people take action to prevent or detect it – both at home and in the community.

Here are just a few ideas: Encourage families to adopt good habits together, like wearing sunscreen and limiting their time in the sun. Motivate teachers and

administrators to teach kids about the harm of UV radiation and why it’s important to protect yourself. Identify youth leaders in your community who can talk to their

peers about taking steps to prevent skin cancer.

Take simple steps today to protect your skin: Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m.

and 4 p.m. Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Put on sunscreen every 2 hours

and after you swim or sweat. Cover up with long sleeves and a hat. Check your skin

once a month for changes.

For more information on this health topic, please visit the website for the American Academy of Dermatology at: http://healthfinder.gov/nho/
