MALAGACY FLAUNTS HIS TALENT IN REBEL STAKESBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

It is rare the winding path that leads to the Kentucky Derby Pre-

sented by Yum! Brands (G1) gets too trampled upon without the barn of seven-time Eclipse Award winner Todd Pletcher stealing some focus along the way.

Like a train arriving on schedule, another late-blooming Toddler has emerged to make his presence known just before crunch time.

One month after stablemate One Liner made a splash on the Triple Crown trail over the Oaklawn Park track, fellow Pletcher trainee Malagacy gave his future Hall of Fame conditioner another legitimate sophomore to point toward the first Saturday in May when he captured the $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) by two lengths over Sonneteer at the Hot Springs oval March 18.

Pletcher may not have come into 2017 with any of the perceived leaders of the 3-year-old male class, but as is typical for his dominant operation, it hasn't taken him long to get some still-developing talents to step forward at just the right moments.

Sumaya U.S. Stable's Malagacy is one such horse. Unraced at 2, the son of Shackleford didn't debut until Jan. 4, when he blew the doors off Gulfstream Park with a 15-length win going 5 1/2 furlongs on the main track. Eight days before One

Liner took the Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn, Malagacy was giving his own sign of what was to come when he won a 6 1/2-furlong allowance test at Gulfstream by seven lengths.

"He was so impressive in his first two starts that (sending him to the Rebel) wasn't a question of talent," said Pletcher, who also conditions Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) winner Tapwrit. "It was just a question of handling different things and one of those was shipping from his Florida base to Hot Springs, and he handled that well. Of course, the other questions were stretching out around two turns and stepping up into graded

stakes company."We were very confident in the

way the horse was training. He had been training very well. He had shown us in his breezes that the added distance wouldn't be an issue, but we just don't know until they do it. There's some stamina in his pedigree, but he's also a very quick and a very fast horse."

The 1 1/16-mile Rebel was Malagacy's first two-turn test and first try against graded company. The chestnut colt shrugged off both challenges Saturday, rating in second with Royal Mo to his outside, as pacesetter Uncontested cut an opening quarter in :23.03 and a half-mile in :47.04.

As the 11-horse field reached the far turn, Malagacy advanced outside to eyeball Uncontested, while 8-5 favorite American Anthem was trying futilely to get into gear. With jockey Javier Castellano keeping him to task late, Malagacy edged clear in mid-stretch to stop the teletimer in 1:43 as 112-1 longshot and maiden Sonneteer won a tight battle for runner-up honors.

"He doesn't do anything wrong, very impressive the way he did it today. I rode with a lot of confidence," Castellano said.

Untrapped put in a rally on the far outside for third, with Petrov hitting the wire fourth.

Silver Dust completed the top five, while American Anthem, who was aiming to give trainer Bob Baffert his seventh win in the Rebel, faded to tenth.

"(He) slipped really bad leaving there in behind

and stayed that way the whole race," said Mike Smith, jockey of American Anthem. "(He) just struggled for whatever reason. I was OK as long as we were all slow. As soon as we had to pick it up... his head, legs just went everywhere."

Bred by John Trumbulovic and purchased by agent Steve Young for $190,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale, Malagacy is unbeaten in three starts with $586,800 in earnings. He earned 50 qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard to put him fourth in the standings.

"The (grade 1) Arkansas Derby would be the logical next step," Pletcher said. "We'll bring him home tomorrow to Palm Beach Downs and see how he bounces out of it. The Arkansas Derby timing-wise would be good, and getting a mile-and-an-eighth race under his belt would also be beneficial. That would be 'Plan A,' but in this business we all know that sometimes you have to call some audibles. Right now that's what the thinking is." BH

VALE DORI HOLDS OFF FINEST CITY IN SANTA MARGARITABy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Maybe—just maybe—Vale Dori has been doing more than picking up the pieces in Southern California's

distaff division in the absence of champions Songbird and Stellar Wind.

In her most impressive win yet March 18, Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum's 5-year-old Asiatic Boy mare took champion female sprinter Finest City's best shot in the Santa Anita Park stretch and found enough late to win the $400,000 Santa Margarita Stakes (G1) by 1 1/2 lengths.

Finest City, last year's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) winner, shadowed the front-running Vale Dori through nearly every step of the 1 1/8-mile test, pulled alongside in the final turn, but could never get by.

Under jockey Rafael Bejarano, Vale Dori broke a bit slow, but quickly took command to set fractions of :23.50, :48.23, and 1:12.21 through six furlongs, with

Finest City not budging from her hip on the outside."When I saw that Finest City didn't want to go to

the lead, I just took control of the race and took it from there," Bejarano said. "She was really focused today and she showed me a big kick in the stretch. She was tough."

Vale Dori kicked away by about a length turning for home and Finest City never was able to make up the margin. The Bob Baffert-trained winner hit the wire in 1:48.81, for her fourth straight graded score and first grade 1 victory.

The top two finishers were 9 1/2 lengths clear of the rest of the field and longshot Autumn Flower completed the trifecta.

"She ran great," said Finest City's jockey, Tyler Baze. "This is probably just a little too far for her, but she ran really well. I give the winner credit. She'd never been headed before and we were head-and-head the whole way."

Bred in Argentina, out of the Halo Sunshine mare Valerina, Vale Dori now has eight wins from 13 starts, with earnings of $934,943. After a 10 1/4-length allowance win in October, Vale Dori won the Bayakoa

Handicap (G2) at Del Mar, and the La Canada Stakes (G2) and Santa Maria Stakes (G2), both at Santa Anita.

"Today was the first time I think that she was really pressured almost the whole race," Bejarano said. "She showed me a lot of power—a lot of heart."

A head behind Autumn Flower came Lady Tapit, who was followed by Estrechada, Wild At Heart, Perfect Pic, and Show Stealer to complete the order of finish. BH

STREAMLINE RIDES PATH TO VICTORY IN AZERIBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

There has rarely been a moment in Streamline's career when the

daughter of Straight Line didn't give a thoroughly honest account of herself. But as the 5-year-old mare turned into the stretch of the $350,000 Azeri Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park, she transformed from distaffer that al-ways held her own to one that could hold strong when graded stakes accolades were on the line.

Hitting the board in five prior graded stakes tries, Streamline finally got the job done at the next level March 18. Under crafty handling from jockey Chris Landeros, the dark bay mare scored a one-length win over Eskenformoney while 1-5 favorite Terra Promessa ran fifth after a troubled trip in what was her first loss in six starts at Oaklawn.

Consistency has been Streamline's hallmark since she broke her maiden at first asking at Arlington Park in July 2015. She's only been worse than third once in her 16 starts heading into Saturday and delivered such admirable efforts as her runner-up finish to Forever Unbridled in last year's Apple Blossom Handicap (G1).

Streamline's first stakes win came when she took the 2016 Pippin Stakes at odds of 15-1 over the Oaklawn surface. Dismissed at 12-1 odds off her third-place finish to Terra Promessa in the Feb. 18 Bayakoa Stakes (G3), Streamline recorded another breakthrough stunner in the Azeri when she rated

second on the outside, just a neck off of pacesetter She Mabee Wild through fractions of :23.71 and :47.41 for a half-mile, before taking command coming off the final turn.

"We broke super and it looked like the favorite (Terra Promessa) didn't break quite as good. But Chris rode her great," said winning trainer Brian Williamson, who conditions Streamline for his mother-in-law Nancy Vanier and Cartwright Thoroughbreds. "He kind of made sure he kept (Terra Promessa) in the pocket. It was a great day. If she comes back good, we're definitely running (in the Apple Blossom)."

While Streamline was getting an ideal trip, Terra Promessa was battling trouble from the start. Breaking from post 2 under Irad Ortiz Jr., the Stonestreet Stables homebred was never able to use her early speed as she was taken back to third going into the first turn, steadied sharply to keep from

running up on rivals, and got boxed in again on the far turn before throwing in the towel in the lane.

"She just didn't show up," Ortiz said.

Streamline had no such issues as she came into the stretch with a 1 1/2-length advantage, hitting the wire in 1:43.67 over a track rated fast.

"She runs hard every time. She deserves a chance every single race," Landeros said of his mount. "She's little but she's so game. I just knew she'd give me 110% every time. She's so honest every race."

Graded stakes winner Eskenformoney held for place honors over Tiger Moth with Power of Snunner coming home fourth in the seven-horse field.

Bred in Illinois by Vanier, Streamline paid $26.20, $9.40, and $19.60 across the board. She improved her record to seven wins from 17 starts with $601,566 in earnings. BH

FARRELL FIRES FIVE-FURLONG BULLETBy BloodHorse Staff

Coffee Pot Stables' homebred Farrell turned in an impressive move in her preparations for the

$400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks (G2), drilling a bullet five furlongs in 1:00 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots March 18, moving methodically throughout at her high cruising rate. The Wayne Catalano trainee posted the best move of 54 works at the distance that day.

"Everything went beautifully," Catalano said. "The track was a little busy when she got out there, so she got a little worked up, but ultimately she worked really good. We wanted a harder, longer work than last week. A medium work. She'll likely do an easy half (mile) next week. She's fit and ready to go and we are just maintaining."

Farrell brings a three-race win streak into the April 1 Fair Grounds Oaks. The daughter of Malibu Moon most recently cruised to a 3 1/2-length, gate-to-wire win in the Feb. 25 Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2) after opening her sophomore campaign with a victory in the Jan. 21 Silverbulletday Stakes.

Farrell was already well regarded heading into her 3-year-old year, having closed out her four-race juvenile campaign with a six-length triumph in the Golden Rod Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs last Nov. 26.

Another notable sophomore runner on the Fair Grounds worktab Saturday was Brad Grady's Girvin, winner of the Feb. 25 Risen Star Stakes (G2) in just his third career start.

The son of Tale of Ekati went five furlongs in 1:01 working in company with Cool Arrow for trainer Joe Sharp as he readies for his expected start in the $1,000,000 Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) April 1.

With Rosie Napravnik aboard Girvin and Sharp on Cool Arrow, the pair went their first quarter in: 24 3/5, three furlongs in :36 3/5, and galloped out six furlongs in 1:14 1/5 while remaining even.

"He went great," Sharp said. "I was on Cool Arrow again and Rosie was on Girvin and it was even better than we expected. Unlike when they've worked together before, we had Girvin on the outside this time. At one point, Rosie squeezed on him and he quickly opened up a little on Cool Arrow. He galloped out great, too."

A half-brother to graded stakes winner Cocked and Loaded, Girvin will have one more maintenance breeze next week. BH

DISTINTA FLIES LATE TO WIN THE INSIDE INFORMATIONBy Mary Reedert @BH_MReeder

With 1-2 favorite Curlin's Approval not firing, Veb Racing Stable's Distinta closed fast to earn her first

graded score by a half-length in the $200,000 Inside Information Stakes (G2) March 18 at Gulfstream Park.

The Summer Bird mare came into the race after finishing second by a neck to Moment of Delight, who faded to seventh in Saturday's race, in Gulfstream's White Pearl Stakes Feb. 18.

The 94-1 longshot Danessa Again led the field through the first quarter in :22.71 and a half-mile in :45.45.

Dearest made a bold three-wide move on the turn and was all alone in the stretch, where she pulled away by three or four lengths before Distinta and jockey John Velazquez, followed by Wheatfield and Edgar Prado who claimed second, closed the distance and just got

by Dearest who held for third.Final time for the seven furlongs on the fast track

was 1:23.93.Distinta returned $25.80, $10.40, and $9.20 across

the board."I wanted to be closer to the horses up front,"

Velazquez said. "It worked out really well. When I asked her down the lane, she responded really good. I saw her the last time and it looked like she was too far back. She had to make up too much ground."

Trained by Venezuela native Victor Barboza Jr., 5-year-old Distinta has finished third or better in her last six starts, and scored an optional-claiming allowance win just before her third-place finish in the Jan. 28 Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3), which was won by Curlin's Approval.

"I told (Velazquez) to watch the replay of her last race," Barboza said. "No more. Johnny is very smart. It's my first graded stakes (win) in the United States. I won 28 graded stakes in Venezuela."

Bred in Kentucky by Hargus Sexton, Sandra Sexton, and Silver Fern Farm, Distinta is out of the unraced Storm Cat mare Miss Kitty. She has earned $299,715 in her 22 lifetime starts and has a record of 4-7-3.

Alter's Racing Stable's odds-on favorite Curlin's Approval never threatened and finished fifth under jockey Luis Saez.

"She was flat," Saez said. "She broke. She was trying, but she was flat and couldn't get there." BH

WINX ROLLS TO 16TH STRAIGHT VICTORYBy Bob Kieckhefer

Winx, Australia's reigning super mare, had no trouble with the

heavy turf against six overmatched opponents in the March 18 China Horse Club George Ryder Stakes (G1) and rolled to her 16th straight win by more than seven lengths.

Winx was a step slow out of the gate and took up a position behind the leaders three wide. By the top of the lane, however, she was in full stride and the issue no longer was in doubt.

Le Romain and Chautauqua gave futile chase, finishing second and third as Winx, a 5-year-old Street Cry mare, slogged through 1,500 meters (about 7 1/2 furlongs) of heavy turf in 1:34.87 under regular rider Hugh Bowman.

Endless Drama and Tosen Stardom were late scratches for the feature at Rosehill Gardens in suburban Sydney.

Winx's performance against the best available competition started local tongues wagging with the question—could she even be better than Black Caviar? Probably not yet. Black Caviar retired undefeated with a 25-race win streak and 15 group 1 wins against Winx's current total of 11.

Still trainer Chris Waller said Winx performed even beyond his expectations Saturday and raised his hopes she has not yet fully realized her potential. He added the spirited stretch drive in the George Ryder will stand her in good stead when she tackles 2,000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles) in the upcoming Queen Elizabeth (G1).

"I didn't expect her to win like that," Waller said. "She is just an amazing horse."

Winx highlighted a big day of

racing at Rosehill Gardens. In the Sky Racing Rosehill

Guineas (G1), New Zealand Derby winner Gingernuts served notice he's to be reckoned with in some big races down the road. The Kiwi-bred Iffrajj gelding picked up his fourth straight win, besting the favorite, Inference, by nearly 1 1/2 lengths.

Gingernuts, ridden by Tommy Berry, ran 2,000 meters on the heavy turf in 2:11.46. So Si Bon was just a head behind Inference in third.

Earlier on the card, Hartnell took a break from his competition with Winx to contest the 2,000-meter Ranvet Stakes—only to finish second to a different foe, German-bred Our Ivanhowe. Under Kerrin McEvoy, Our Ivanhowe finished in 2:10.62 with The United States close behind Hartnell for third.

A 7-year-old son of Soldier Hollow, Our Ivanhowe was making his first start of the season after struggling during the Southern Hemisphere springtime, including a 17th-place finish in the Melbourne Cup (G1). He had not won since taking the Doomben Cup (G1) in May.

She Will Reign did just that in the day's richest race, the AU$3.5 million (US$2.7 million) Longines Golden Slipper (G1) for 2-year-olds. The Manhattan Rain filly rallied from well back to score her fourth win from five starts by a length.

Menari finished second but was set down to fourth for interference. That elevated Frolic to second and Tulip to third and gave fillies an official sweep of the top three placings. The favorite, Houtzen, finished fifth.

Ben Melham rode She Will Reign over the 1,200 meters (about six furlong) in 1:15.04 for trainer Gary Portelli. Her only defeat was a second-place upset at the hands of Frolic in the Reisling Stakes (G2) March 4. Saturday's race was her first try at the highest level.

Favorite Russian Revolution won the Nathan's Famous Hotdogs Galaxy Stakes (G1) by a neck over Redzel. Jungle Edge finished a close third. Russian Revolution, a 3-year-old Snitzel colt, gave McEvoy his second group 1 win on the card to go with thirds in the Guineas and Golden Slipper. BH

MOR SPIRIT HANDLES ESSEX FIELD WITH EASEBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

More than 13 months after his last victory, Michael Lund Pe-

tersen's Mor Spirit returned to the winner's circle with style March 18 in the $250,000 Essex Handicap at Oaklawn Park.

The grade 1 winning 4-year-old son of Eskendereya last won the 2016 Robert B. Lewis (G3) on his way to a start in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), but gave another indication of his class in his start prior to the Essex, when he ran second to Bob Baffert stablemate Hoppertunity in the Feb. 4 San Antonio Stakes (G2).

Under the guidance of jockey Mike Smith Saturday, Mor Spirit thrived in his first start at Oaklawn. He dueled outside of Shotgun Kowboy for the early lead and grade 2 winner Madefromlucky pressed the top two even more in the backstretch.

Madefromlucky continued his challenge in the stretch as Shotgun Kowboy faded, and got within a head of Mor Spirit with a furlong to run, but could not get past. Mor Spirit pulled away from the field late to win by 2 1/2 lengths.

"Heading for home, a horse came up to his outside. He dug in and I just stayed a little busy on him," Smith said. "Just because it's his first time here. You're so close to the crowd here, which is pretty

cool, but sometimes it will get a horse looking around a little bit. So I just stayed more or less just after him to keep his attention, and he won very nice today."

Shotgun Kowboy set fractions of :23.48, :46.63, and 1:10.81 through six furlongs before Mor Spirit took over to finish off the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.62.

"We were hoping he'd jump well and sit off whoever, and if not, I'd be the aggressor and take the lead," Smith said. "I was thinking about it for a minute, but I was happy with where I was at and we just went from there. He ran really good—really well today."

With the victory, Mor Spirit now has a stakes win in each of his three years of racing. At 2 he won the Los

Alamitos Futurity (G1) and at 3 he scored in the Lewis.

Longshot Domain's Rap made a late closing bid to pick up second-place honors, followed by Madefromlucky, Dazzling Gem, Secret Passage, Shotgun Kowboy, and Dalmore to complete the order of finish.

Bred in Pennsylvania, out of the Dixie Union mare Im a Dixie Girl, Mor Spirit now has four wins and five seconds from 11 starts with earnings of $886,400. BH

STALLIONS& BLOODSTOCK COMMENTARYwith Robert L. Losey, [email protected]

FIRST-YEAR STALLIONS AND AVERAGE WINNING DISTANCE

Some findings from my research investigating top 10 first- and/or third-year sires and their abilities

to "stay the course" as their runners mature, which appeared in the March 18 MarketWatch section of the BloodHorse magazine.

I suspect most readers share my expectation that runners by distance-oriented stallions that race well as young horses have a better than average chance to continue their successes. But I didn't expect to find as consistent a relationship as the research results suggest.

Which of the following three alternative criteria for predicting future stallion success would you expect to be most reliable?

A) Being number one on the first-year sire list, B) Appearing among the top 10 on both the first- and third-year leading sire lists, or C) being number 10 or better on both lists while also having runners that exhibit high average winning distances (AWD).

I researched stallions from the 2001-13 first-year list for group A. In evaluating criteria B and C, I also inquired how first-year stallions from 2000-13 ranked two years later on third-year lists.

To evaluate each group's long-term success, I compared the medians of average yearling prices from the eighth crop of yearlings for each group. When necessary seventh or earlier crop averages were used for stallions of recent vintage. The price median for the 13 stallions ranked number one on

its respective first-year stallion list was $66,300. The price median for the 78 "dual qualifiers" from group B was $45,700, suggesting that topping the first-year list is a better criterion.

But, when the group B dual qualifiers were stratified based on their AWD, this proved to be a powerful tool in identifying stallions that would become more successful as their runners matured. The accompanying diagram illustrates this. Dual qualifier stallions are listed from highest AWD (Giant's Causeway at 8.2) on the left, to lowest AWD (Wildcat Heir at 6.1) on the right.

Consider that if you limited yourself to breeding to the 21 (out of 78) dual qualifiers from those 13 crops with highest AWD, their median sales price was $161,100. If you limit yourself to the highest 11 by AWD, you end up with Victory Gallop plus 10 superstars, with those 11 having a median average yearling sales price of $217,700.

Why the AWD criterion identifies stallions with staying power is intuitively straightforward: runners who prefer longer distances are at a disadvantage against "fast-twitch" sprinters in 2-year-old races. If a stallion with a high AWD ranks high on the first-year list, his runners are likely to do even better as they stretch out. For more detail see RLLosey.com. BH
