FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS Listen for the tolling of the church bells, wherever you are, this Friday, 8/31. That's the International Overdose Awareness Day, a global event held each year on August 31st, to raise awareness of drug overdoses, to remember, to pray. Even if you don't hear the bells, pray anyway - in fact, pray often about this devastating crisis in our day. Pray for those who are so vulnerable to addiction, so close to making unhealthy choices. Pray for those who are already addicted, for those who have overdosed, perhaps multiple times and have lived to do it again, all because they are 'caught' in the scourge of addiction, pray for all of the many who have overdosed and died. Pray for the loved ones who dealt with, or continue to deal with, the effects of addiction. Pray for EMT's and health care workers and addiction counselors. Watch for our information table in Holy Family Hall on Sunday, September 2, brought to you by SEAS H.O.P.E. Alliance (Heroin Outreach, Prevention, and Education), and SEAS S.A.M.
(Substance Addiction Ministry), as we continue to remember, pray, and raise awareness.
It Is the Spirit Who Gives Life – Bishop Zubik often refers to On Mission for The Church Alive! as a new Pentecost for the Church of Pittsburgh. This journey is a time for us to open our hearts to the movement of the Holy Spirit as he pours forth his gifts so that we might follow his promptings to share our faith with others and grow the Church. As we reflect upon the effects of that first Pentecost in the lives of the Apostles we see that their hearts were transformed in order that they might fulfill God’s will. The
Acts of the Apostles show us how the gifts of the Spirit brought forth confidence and wisdom in the Apostles so that they could go out to all the world and tell the good news. This same Spirit of God gives us life as we are called to go into our communities and share the same faith as we invite others to trust in God. At times we may not feel equipped for this task, yet relying on the grace of God we can renew the Church through the power of the Holy Spirit. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

SEXUAL ABUSE OF MINORS Because I had to prepare this column “from the pastor” before the release of the Attorney General’s report on August 14, I cannot now guess what more I might have to say on the subject, nor even whether I want to say any more. But I review the main points thus far: • The sexual abuse of minors is very harmful, even if it was a long time ago. Survivors have a
right and in some cases even a duty to speak up. • Pastors and other institutional leaders have a responsibility to prevent the abuse of minors,
and we often failed to meet that responsibility. • In the United States, over recent decades, we’ve nearly eliminated the problem of clergy
sexual abuse of minors. The following table is from the report of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, The Causes and Context of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Catholic Priests in the United States, 1950-2010.
• So far as they go, these statistics are good, but they don’t address questions about “cover
ups,” ongoing disputes about best policies and practices, or clergy sexual misconduct more generally, beyond the abuse of minors.
Please offer your prayers and your sensitivity toward survivors and other affected persons. If you know something that should be known, please speak up. Please, however, refrain from spreading general cynicism and rumors, inasmuch as these only fog up the public conversation and make it harder to hear the true stories. Please insist on full accountability, transparency, and compliance with the best practices of the Safe Environment program, which have helped the Catholic Church in the U.S. to become a very safe place for children.

IT'S TIME TO GET ON THE BUS! We at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton have secured our bus for The 2018 Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. The pilgrimage is Saturday, September 15, and is a day trip. The cost for each person is $75 including one boxed meal on the way home that evening. You will want to plan to bring additional funds for
purchasing lunch upon arrival, gifts at the Basilica gift shop, tip for the bus driver, etc. If you've never done this pilgrimage before, know that it's a wonderful experience! We are looking for commitment and payment immediately, as the trip is just around the corner, and will be here before we know it! Checks should be made payable to “SEAS Parish” with “9/15/18 pilgrimage” in notation section. We still have seats and we want to fill the bus. Why go on a pilgrimage? A pilgrimage is a journey one takes to a sacred place, usually with a ‘special intention’, in supplication for a particular petition (perhaps for some type of healing), as an act of thanksgiving, or merely to strengthen one’s faith. Pilgrims make these trips not so much as a sightseeing tour, but more as a prayer, and as a quest to encounter the Lord. Pilgrimages to shrines and other holy places can serve as a reminder to us that our entire lives on earth are a pilgrimage on our way to heaven. Join us! Your contact for commitment and/or questions is Tess Keddie, 412-276-1011 ext. 221 or [email protected]. Please leave your name, email address, mail address, and phone number.

CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER GROUP
St. John of the Cross tells us, “The language God hears best is silent love”; therefore John advises us, “Preserve a loving attentiveness to God” (Sayings of Light and Love 132, 88). If you feel drawn to practicing silent attention to God in an intentional way, you may wish to join the contemplative prayer group that will be meeting occasionally beginning this Fall. We will engage in reflective reading of scripture together, alternating with times of silence and stillness. Our gathering times will be based on the participants’ availability. If you are interested, please contact Tess Keddie or Steve Geitgey.
We see it in the book of Revelation, as well as elsewhere in Scripture: the evil one is out to
get us. His best shot at that is to work his evil through people, especially through people
who are supposed to be holy. In humility, we believe that Jesus will have the final say.
Christ Jesus, Victor, knows that immorality exists in the world, and, sadly, even in His Body,
the Church, and so he allows the Church to be purified.
When the purification becomes extra painful, many want to leave. But when Jesus said
to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to
whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and
are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6: 68-69
Lord, make us a holy people. Have mercy on us, and forgive all of our sins.
Heal all of the hurts and pain and damage done.
Teach us to use wisdom, compassion, justice, and love as we deal with each other,
in the Church and in the world.
Teach us to humbly seek Truth, and help us to find the whole Truth,
and nothing but the Truth.
Help us, Lord.
