THE BEGINNING OF LENT AND RECEIVING COMMUNION AT THE ALTAR RAIL
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26. Please see our Ash Wednesday Mass schedule on page 5. On Ash Wednesday, Catholics ages 18 through 59 are required to fast, eating only one full meal plus two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. Everyone age 14 and older is obligated to abstain from eating meat that day. (See http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/lent/catholic-information-on-lenten-fast-and-abstinence.cfm.) With the arrival of Lent, we will start using our magnificent, historic marble altar rail to receive Holy Communion at all Sunday Masses, including the 5 p.m. Vigil Mass on Saturday. Communion at the altar rail has worked well for more than a year for our weekday Masses. This is the way our school children receive Communion when at the Basilica for First Friday and Holy Days. It’s also how Communion is received at weddings and funerals. I’m confident it will be a reverent, efficient way to receive Our Lord in the Eucharist on Sundays too. We stand in line for so many routine, mundane things in life – at the DMV, the bus stop, the dry cleaner! In contrast, when we receive Holy Communion, we intimately encounter the least mundane thing in the world – the Risen Lord. Many take a moment at the altar rail to gaze up at the image of Christ on the crucifix and reflect on His perfect love for us. The altar rail is an extension of the Altar of Sacrifice where the priest conse-crates the Sacred Host. Fr. Greg J. Markey of the Diocese of Bridgeport, CT, says it marks “where heaven and the priest meet, where the priest, acting in persona Christi [in the person of Christ] reaches across from heaven to earth to give us the Eucharist as the gift of divine life.” Constructing the altar and the altar rail from the same material reinforces the symbolic connection of the two. Holy Communion at the altar rail is also practical and more efficient. It actually takes less time and is more secure to have the priest move along the altar rail with the ciborium and the communicant already in place. How will it work at the Basilica of Saint Mary? Only those seated in the nave, or main section, of the church will receive at the altar rail. (Those seat-ed in the balconies and side pews will continue to receive Communion at the usual stations.) Exit your pew as you normally would, toward the center aisle. Then approach the altar rail and fan out to fill open spaces, beginning at the far right. Kneel (or stand if needed) at the red cushions; please do not stand or kneel at the brass gates. If you kneel, there is no need to bow or genuflect before receiving, as kneeling itself is a proper show of reverence. You may choose to receive the Sacred Host on your tongue or in your hand. Many people find receiving Our Lord on the tongue is more natural and more comfortable due to the height at which the Host is distributed at the altar rail. I hope you will experience many spiritual benefits in receiving Communion in this communal way.

Quo Vadis and FIAT Camp Registration Quo Vadis Days and FIAT Camps are great opportunities for Catholic high school students (rising freshmen through rising seniors) to have fun while deepening their faith and exploring their vocations. Quo Vadis (for boys) is staffed by Arlington seminarians, priests and religious, and runs July 12 to 16. FIAT (for girls), staffed by reli-gious sisters, runs July 19 to 23. STATIONS OF THE CROSS On Fridays during Lent, it is a tradition at the Basilica of Saint Mary and most Catholic churches to pray the Stations of the Cross. This 14-step devotion commemorates the events of Christ’s last day on Earth as a man, beginning with His condemnation by Pontius Pilate and ending as He is laid in the tomb. At each Station, prayers are recited as we then move to the next Station until all 14 are completed. The Stations can, of course, be prayed in the Basilica and elsewhere any time, often as a mini-pilgrimage recalling Christ’s sacrifice for us.
Our Stations consist of 14 oil paintings on wood panels with mahogany-stained frames. The images are subtly multi-colored with gold leaf accents. Stations I through VII are installed on the north wall of the nave; Stations VIII through XIV are found on the south wall. These Sta-tions date back to extensive renovation of the church in 1857. Pastor at that time was Fr. Peter Kroes, S.J., a native of Holland. He was the first tenured pastor at Saint Mary and served here until 1872. The Basilica Stations may have been the work of American artist Edward Schuler (1806-1882),
noted in an Alexandria Gazette article of July 16, 1857, as a “Fresco Painter.” They were restored in 1995 On Fridays in Lent, beginning February 28, everyone is invited to join us for a Lenten Soup Supper at 6 p.m. in the Lyceum, followed by Stations of the Cross in the Basilica at 7 p.m. (No Soup Supper on Good Friday, April 10.)
