PROGRAM NOTESIn the PastComposer: Mark ThomeNationality: American

Get your Latin groove on this afternoon for the premiere of In the Past, a concerto for brass quintet and orchestra. The piece is based on Latin rhythms and was composed by Mark Thome at the direction of SOGO's Liz Ward.

"I wanted a piece with Latin rhythms that would intrigue audiences and would be fun for the audiences to listen and musicians to play," says Ward.

Thome based each movement on a different Latin rhythm - Cha Cha, Bolero and Mambo. "As I was composing," he says, "a fictional storyline emerged about an individual who is sharing memories of a courtship."

Ward, who pulls double duty at SOGO as both the Brass Choir assistant conductor and the French horn teaching artist, is excited for SOGO musicians to play something new and non-traditional.

"I think there is a fascination with Latin rhythms and people enjoy the experience of listening and dancing to them. Generally we spend most of our time playing western European and American music, which is pretty straightforward – 1, 2, 3, 4. We don’t get the experience of playing these Latin American rhythms. It is great to introduce them to the kids."

Evergreen Brass Quintet: George Steward, trumpet; Dan Schmidt, trumpet; Elizabeth Ward, French horn; Ryan Shepherd, trombone; Jameson Bratcher, tuba.

Evergreen Brass Quintet (EBQ), founded in 1981, is known for its educational and entertaining school programs, including its participation in the Washington State Arts Commission's Arts in Education program.

Ward describes the EBQ repertoire as, "everything from Bach to Bop! ...Sousa to Swing!" Evergreen Brass Quintet

Mark Thome

Symphony No. 8 in B Minor Composer: Franz Schubert (1797-1823)Nationality: Austrian

Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 is also known as the “Unfinished Symphony” because Schubert only wrote two movements. For many years people speculated that he did complete the symphony and the last two movements had been lost. This theory has been discredited, although he did sketch ideas for another movement.

The first movement, Allegro moderato, has an eerie bass and cello opening. The melody expands to upper strings, then a clarinet and oboe solo, and finally the full orchestra. The second movement, Andante con moto, is full of dramatic contrasts. It starts off serenely but the turbulent second theme intrudes like a storm. The movement ends in an uneasy peace.

Bourrée in D MajorComposer: Johann Fasch (1688–1758)Nationality: German

Fasch spent most of his career as a court kapellmeister (music director) in Zerbst, Germany. He wrote a lot of music for church and court occasions, but none of his compositions were published during his lifetime. It wasn't until the early 20th century that German teacher and composer Hugo Riemann rediscovered

Fasch, describing him as a composer who “set instrumental music entirely on its feet ... with modern ‘thematic’ style.” The Evergreen Brass Quintet will stay with the Conservatory orchestra to perform this delightful dance.

Overture to The Barber of SevilleComposer: Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868)Nationality: Italian

Gioachino Rossini was born into a musical family and began composing at age twelve. His overture to The Barber of Seville was composed for an earlier opera, but was recycled for use in this comedic opera. Listen for the "Rossini crescendo" in which the piece builds to an intense orchestral frenzy.
