One Day at a Time

It is only the second week of November, but I am sure you have already seen Christmas

decorations up in some of the shopping malls. There was an article in one of the local newspapers recently which stated that many stores were putting up their decorations as early as possible to

compete with the stores who were going to wait until the traditional opening date of the Christmas shopping season (the day after Thanksgiving.) There seems to be fewer stores which wait until that

“traditional opening date.”

This seems to be a rather sad statement about what Christmas means to many people in our

society today. One holiday that seems to get pushed further behind the scenes by this early Christmas decorating is Thanksgiving. One really has to make an effort to enjoy the present moment

and not get caught up in the hustle and bustle of something that is not celebrated for another six

weeks.

Jesus said tomorrow has enough problems and that we should focus on today. Certainly we all have to do some planning regarding our finances, career, education and so forth. However, we must

make sure that we look for and savor the goodness of the present moment. Even if the present time is

filled with chaos and discouragement, there is something to be said for focusing on the now and letting tomorrow take care of itself.

How good it is if we are able to find a few moments in our day to take a walk outside and savor

what God has created. How good it is if we are able to sit quietly in a chair with our eyes closed and

give our Lord fifteen minutes of our undivided attention. How good it is if we are able to simply say, “Thank you, Lord, for all that You have done for me!” Let us enjoy the present time and see it truly as

a gift from God. It is true that tomorrow has enough troubles, but God has given us today. Let us use it as best we can and not pass up an opportunity to praise and thank the One who gave it to us.

Father David

A New Piano

As you may have noticed over the last several weeks, we have purchased a new piano to replace the aging grand piano in the church. The new instrument is a Yamaha Clavinova CLP 695GP. It represents the state of the art in digital piano technology, as well as unprecedented sound quality, wrapped in a beautiful mini grand cabinet. Offering far more than just sampled sounds, the CLP-600 Series reproduces the Yamaha CFX concert grand and the legendary Bӧsendorfer Imperial in meticulous detail.

We chose this new instrument for several reasons; exceptional sound quality, relatively small footprint, state of the art technology, and value. I’m confident that this new instrument will enhance music in our liturgies for years to come. Feel free to stop by the music area and hear it up close!

Tuesdays with Mass, Coffee, and Friends (TMCF)

The next meeting of TMCF will take place on Tuesday, November 12th immediately following the 8:00 Mass on that day. Please plan on joining your fellow St. James parishioners as we first worship our Lord at Mass and then move to St. James Hall for coffee, snacks, and fellowship. All are welcome.

Sunday Evening Bible Study

Please note that this month’s Sunday Evening Bible Study will no longer be meeting on November 17th. We will resume in December on Sunday, December 15th. We hope you will join us!

At St. James the Apostle School, We Teach More

At St. James the Apostle School, we are called to grow spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and physically as members of our school, parish and the greater community. By combining our Catholic beliefs, strong academics, Christian service, liturgy and prayer, we will become people of faith and lifelong learners who serve the broader community. We teach children ages preschool through eighth grade. Call us to schedule a tour: 630-469-8060.

Wow is all we can say for the generosity of this parish in helping us take care of the Veterans at Edward Hines Hospital. We asked for fleece donations, and let's just say we were able to make a total of 14 blankets and created 75 cards for them!! We are very grateful for your help in assisting us to help others! God is so good! This weekend we are working to pack shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Then, some of our high school teens head off to the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis! Get your teen involved in our fantastic community in youth ministry! We are praying for them always!

It’s Time to Start Thinking about the St. James Christmas Basket Program!

It is time to start thinking about the Christmas Basket Program again! As is our tradition, we hope to serve 200+ needy families with a beautiful Christmas! Family Selection begins this weekend. Gifts are due by December 5th and 6th. Please stop by our table in the narthex this weekend and adopt a family in need to bless this Christmas.

Questions? Please email Dawn Fitzpatrick at [email protected] for more information.

Share Your Blessings at Thanksgiving

When the pilgrims settled in America, they celebrated a meal with the Native Americans, giving thanks for the bountiful harvest. The turkey became a symbol of that first Thanksgiving feast. Fast forwarding to the 21st century, America is now made up of many different ethnic groups, each giving thanks according to their culture.

The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry goal is to provide complete Thanksgiving Meals of choice to those struggling to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. Your contributions will enable the pantry to assist those requesting help. If you know anyone unable to provide a Thanksgiving meal for their family, please have them contact the pantry at 630-469-8668. For more information, see our poster board located in the narthex.

The members of the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry are grateful for the strong support it continues to receive from the St. James community. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!

St. Vincent DePaul Society (SVdP)

We would like to thank everyone who donated items for our clothing drive for the St. Vincent de Paul West Chicago Resale Shop. Your donations will enable many people to buy items they need at discounted prices.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is not just about the clothing drive. Through your donations to the Poor Box and the Thanksgiving collection, as well as your individual donations, we are able to provide emergency financial assistance to many of our neighbors in need within our parish boundaries. We also have a compassionate clause that allows us to help people in dire need outside of our boundaries if they cannot get help from any other agencies. In addition, we “twin” with other SVdP conferences in neighboring churches to provide assistance to people in extreme financial need. There are over 72,000 people living in poverty in DuPage County. The 34 St. Vincent de Paul conferences in the Joliet Diocese attempt to give them financial help in their time of greatest need.

At this time, we are quickly running out of funds. We received about $10,000 less in donations this year than we received last year. Meanwhile, we have spent over $7000 to assist clients this year as compared to last year. Consequently, we have cut our assistance to clients drastically until 2020. We are facing the possibility of having no funds left to help our neighbors in need during the holiday season.

We are hoping you can be as generous as possible for our Thanksgiving collection, either at Mass that day or through your Thanksgiving envelopes. Your St. Vincent de Paul volunteers and the people we serve will be greatly appreciative.

If you would like to learn more about what the St. Vincent de Paul Society does to help our neighbors in need, we invite you to join us at one of our meetings. We meet the third Thursday of the month at 7 P.M. at door 9 (by the Blessed Mother statue). We are always in need of new members to help us serve the poor. If you have any questions or would like to talk to one of our volunteers, please feel free to call Dottie Ashley at 630-673-8935.

Finding the Sacred in Scrapbooking

Have you planned your Christmas card? Do you have piles of photos to organize? Do you have digital pictures to organize? Do you want to make a memory book for an aging loved one to enjoy while they are still here or for a young child to be appreciated? We can help by providing room, space and sharing our knowledge.

Bring your pictures and photos to St. James Finding the Sacred in Scrapbooking on November 15 and December 13. Also if you want to participate in our getaway weekend on Martin Luther King weekend we have a circus scrapbooking celebration. Women will gather to play some games and take turns providing one meal to the group and surviving on bunk beds at the camp Duncan YMCA. Cost is $110 please bring to scrapbooking on November 15 at 7:00 P.M. or email [email protected] for details.

We’ve made it through another 40 Days for Life. Thank you to the good people who came out to pray. If you weren’t able to participate at the Access Clinic in Downers Grove, we still have our faithful prayer warriors who have been coming out for seventeen years to pray the rosary at 9:30 A.M. every Wednesday, at Aanchor Abortion Clinic, 1186 Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn. You are very welcome to join these good people.

The clinic is open for business starting at 8:00 A.M., so we try to sidewalk counsel at that time. We are blessed to have Avenue Women’s Center right across the parking lot with free ultrasounds and other services for the young women who are feeling desperate. Over the years we have had some wonderful stories of babies and their mothers who have been saved. We feel blessed that the clinic is no longer open on Saturdays. On Friday they are open from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. for chemical abortions. We are there then also with a large sign that says “Google Abortion Pill Reversal”. If you want more information call Carol Wright 630-469-2265.

You are invited to Nourish for Caregivers at St. Michael in Wheaton

If you are caring for the physical/emotional needs of a relative or friend, we invite you to discuss relevant topics through a Christ-centered lens by attending a Nourish for Caregivers meeting at St. Michael Church in Wheaton. Nourish for Caregivers meets monthly in the St. Michael Church Bridal Suite at 310 S. Wheaton Avenue (enter door #8). For more information, contact Parish Nurse Thecla Rettberg at [email protected] or call 630-665-2250.

The next meeting is Thursday, November 14 at 1:00-2:30 P.M. The topic is “Faith & Spiritual Tools to Feed Us”. We welcome you to join us!
