About the Music Directors

Nana Aomori (Nassau Flute Choir) is a freelance musician and teacher residing in New York. While residing in Tokyo, Japan, she was principal flutist with the Yokohama Symphony Orchestra and a founding member of the Funf Woodwind Quintet. As an educator, she has presented clinics and master classes for young

flutists, has been invited to work with musicians in the El Sistema Music Program in Venezuela, and has collaborated with the New York Philharmonic Educational Department. Ms. Aomori is proud to be the founding conductor of MYO’s Nassau Flute Choir, which debuted in 2013. She is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, where she received her Bachelor of Music in Flute performance studying with Jeanne Baxtresser and Fenwick Smith. in New York, presented at the Winter NYSSMA conference, NAfME All-Eastern Conference and was a featured educator in NYSSMA’s DVD, “Music Views.” Dr. Ho is currently the director of bands at the Wheatley School in the East Williston school district.

Patricia Koppeis (Nassau Symphony Orchestra) a native of North Carolina, attended UNC-Chapel Hill, received her Bachelor of Music from New England Conservatory, and completed her graduate degree from Teacher’s College Columbia University. Prior to her teaching career, she was a first violinist in the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and also freelanced in New York. During her thirty-five years of being a professional educator, Ms. Koppeis taught all levels

of strings in the Syosset Central School District. Her inspiration for teaching was influenced by her training and professional performing. Conductors Claude Monteux, Sir Neville Marriner, Russell Stanger, and Benjamin Zander, and teachers Lilo Glick and Eric Rosenblith have inspired her to guide her students to the highest musical levels. While at Syosset, her orchestras consistently achieved the highest NYSSMA Major Ensemble ratings and were invited to perform at state and national music conferences. Her students performed with Dr. Bert Konowitz, Dr. Billy Taylor, and Dave Brubeck, and have worked with Metropolitan Opera conductor Paul Nadler. Ms. Koppeis began conducting with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (MYO) in 1997 and continues to serve as musical director and conductor of the Nassau Symphony Orchestra. For many summers, Ms. Koppeis served as String Orchestra conductor for the New York State Summer School of Orchestral Studies Program in Saratoga, NY. A frequent clinician and guest conductor, Ms. Koppeis has conducted several area All-State, All-County, and LISFA orchestras. Her professional memberships include NYSSMA, MENC, NMEA, LISFA, and ASTA, and she has served as Tri-M chairperson on both the state and national level for NYSSMA and MENC.

About the Music Directors

Michelina Sobolewski (Nassau String Orchestra) received her Bachelor of Music Education at the Crane School of Music where she studied viola with Dr. Peter Bucknell and Dr. Shelly Tramposh. She received her Master’s degree from Stony Brook University, and Suzuki certification from the Hartt School of Music under the guidance of Carrie Reuning-Hummel, one of the first Suzuki students in the United States. Mrs. Sobolewski is an active member of the music

community, having served as a chairperson for Nassau County Music Educators Association (NMEA) and newsletter editor of the Long Island String Festival Association (LISFA). She has performed with Sound Symphony Orchestra and a variety of pit orchestras in Nassau County. As a clinician, Mrs. Sobolewski has presented workshops at the Balanced Mind Conference relating to programming and curriculum development. In addition to her passion for music, she is a certified yoga instructor for kids and adults focusing on how breathing and mindful movements can help to improve musicians. Mrs. Sobolewski is currently an elementary orchestra teacher in the Herricks School District. Her orchestras perform regularly at the NYSSMA Major Organization Evaluation Festival, consistently receiving “Gold” and “Gold With Distinction” ratings.

Scott Stickley (Nassau Principal Orchestra) begins this twenty-fifth anniversary as one of The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York’s longest-tenured conductors. Since MYO’s inception, Mr. Stickley has seen the organization become one of the largest youth orchestra and choir programs in the country. Highlights of Maestro Stickley’s tenure include an audience-acclaimed tour of Spain in 2016 featuring members of the MYO Orchestra in performance at

the Granada International Festival of Music and Dance; a 2014 Carnegie Hall premiere of Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo’s choral masterwork “To the East

ABOUT THE METROPOLITAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA OF NEW YORK

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is committed to fostering a community of talented young musicians from Long Island and providing them with an opportunity to rehearse and perform choral and orchestral masterworks at the highest possible level with recognized leaders in music education and performance. Founded in 1993 by John C. McNeur, MYO has grown from a 15-piece orchestra to seven orchestras, a flute choir, and seven choral ensembles, serving over 1,000 musicians between the ages of 8 and 18. MYO enjoys a rich tradition of international summer performance tours, beginning with the 1997 tour to Germany, France, and Austria through the most recent tour to Spain in 2016. MYO is thrilled to announce our 12th international performance tour to Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Vienna, and Budapest in July 2018.
