2  THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY A FTER PENTECOST

HOLY COMMUNION THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Sunday, October 19, 2014 + 9:30 a.m.

READ MY LIPS  In Today's First Reading the Lord uses the Gentile ruler Cyrus to accomplish divine purposes. Whenthe Pharisees try to trap Jesus, he tells them to give the emperor what belongs to him and to God whatbelongs to God. To gather for worship reminds us that our ultimate allegiance is to God rather than toany earthly authority. Created in the image of God, we give our entire selves in the service of God andthe world.

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from

whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by theinspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthilymagnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

 Amen

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sinsand cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY A FTER PENTECOST  3

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what wehave done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you

with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in

your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen

The presiding minister addresses the assembly. Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for hissake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of theChurch of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entireforgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, andof the Holy Spirit.

 Amen

The presiding minister prays the prayer of the day.

Let us pray…the prayer concludes…one God, now and forever. Amen.

The assembly is seated. WORD  God’s Word is proclaimed in Scripture reading and preaching

The FIRST READING  Isaiah 45:1–7The prophet announces that Cyrus the Persian emperor is the one the Lord has anointed to endIsrael's exile. The Lord makes this choice so that the whole world will recognize this Lord as the onlyGod. Persia had a god of light and a god of darkness; the Lord claims sovereignty over both light and

darkness.

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have graspedto subdue nations before himand strip kings of their robes,to open doors before him —and the gates shall not be closed:

2I will go before youand level the mountains,I will break in pieces the doors of bronze

and cut through the bars of iron,3I will give you the treasures of darkness

and riches hidden in secret places,so that you may know that it is I, the LORD,the God of Israel, who call you by your name.

4For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen,I call you by your name,I surname you, though you do not know me.

5I am the LORD, and there is no other;

besides me there is no god.I arm you, though you do not know me,

6so that they may know, from the rising of the sunand from the west, that there is no one besides me;I am the LORD, and there is no other.

7I form light and create darkness,I make weal and create woe;I the LORD do all these things.

The reading concludes:

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.

The PSALMODY   Psalm 96

After organ introduction, the choir or cantor will sing the refrain once, then repeated by all. Theassembly sings the refrain.

proclaim God's salvation from | day to day.3Declare God's glory a- | mong the nations

and God's wonders a- | mong all peoples.4For great is the LORD and greatly | to be praised,

more to be feared

|

than all gods. Refrain 5 As for all the gods of the nations, they | are but idols;but you, O LORD, have | made the heavens.

6Majesty and magnificence are | in your presence;power and splendor are in your | sanctuary.

7 Ascribe to the LORD, you families | of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD hon- | or and power.

8 Ascribe to the LORD the honor due the | holy name;bring offerings and enter the courts | of the LORD. Refrain

9 Worship the LORD in the beau- | ty of holiness;tremble before the LORD, | all the earth.

10Tell it out among the nations: "The | LORD is king! The one who made the world so firm that it cannot be moved

 will judge the peo-|

ples with equity."11Let the heavens rejoice, and let the | earth be glad;let the sea thunder and all that is in it;let the field be joyful and all that | is therein.

12Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy at your com- | ing, O LORD,for you come to | judge the earth.

13 You will judge the | world with righteousness

and the peoples | with your truth. Refrain

The SECOND READING  1 Thessalonians 1:1–10 Most likely this letter is the first written by Paul. Paul is giving pastoral encouragement andreassurances to new Christians living in an antagonistic pagan environment. Their commitment of

faith, love, and hope makes them a model for other new Christian communities.

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:Grace to you and peace.2 We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly 3remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and laborof love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we know, brothersand sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you, 5because our message of the

gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake. 6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite ofpersecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, 7so that

you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to

speak about it. 9For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve aliving and true God, 10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from

the dead — Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming.

The reading concludes:

The Word of the Lord

Thanks be to God.

The assembly stands to welcome the Gospel.

The GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

The HOLY GOSPEL  Matthew 22:15–22  After Jesus begins teaching in the temple, religious leaders try to trap him with questions. First theyask if God's people should pay taxes to an earthly tyrant like Caesar.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy +1 Gospel according to MatthewGlory to you, O Lord.

15Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. 16So they senttheir disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that

you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show

deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. 17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?" 18But Jesus, awareof their malice, said, "Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Showme the coin used for the tax." And they brought him a denarius. 20Then he said tothem, "Whose head is this, and whose title?" 21They answered, "The emperor's."Then he said to them, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the

emperor's, and to God the things that are God's."

22

 When they heard this, they

1 Using the thumb, the people may make three small signs of the cross, one on the forehead, one on the lips, and one on the breast whilesilently using the traditional prayer, “May the Good News of Jesus Christ be in my mind, and on my lips, and in my heart. Amen”

All baptized believers who trust that Christ is presented in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist are invited to come forward and receive Christ in the BlessedSacrament. Communion is distributed by coming up the center aisle at the direction of the usher and returningalong the side aisle. Those who do not wish to receive the Sacrament may come forward with their arms crossedand receive a blessing. Those who, for any reason, cannot receive the wine may receive the Sacrament under the form of bread alone. In doing so, a communicant still receives the whole Christ.

Thursday, October 23, 2014 James of Jerusalem, martyr, died around 62

One of three early-church leaders named James, this man is identified in the NewTestament and by a historian of the time as a brother of Jesus. Scholars are uncertain

whether this means a blood brother. He was a leader of the church in Jerusalem.

Sunday, October 26

Philipp Nicolai, died 1608; Johann Heermann, died 1647; Paul Gerhardt, died 1676;hymnwriters

These great hymnwriters all worked in seventeenth-century Germany in times of war andplague. Nicolai, a pastor, lost 1,300 parishioners to plague, 170 in one week. He wrote "OMorning Star, how fair and bright" and "Wake, awake, for night is flying." Heermann'shymns, including "Ah, holy Jesus," often express the emotions of faith. Reformation Sunday

October 26

It was 497 years ago, on October 31, 1517, to be exact, that MartinLuther began a movement to reform the Church of his day. That movement is continued in the tradition of Lutheranism.

We Lutherans aren’t a sect or personality cult devoted to Luther. We aren’t a church of our own. Lutherans are clearly part of theone holy, catholic, and apostolic church. Our aim is to insurethat the truth of God’s saving grace in Jesus Christ proclaimed inits purity to all people everywhere.

We are most attentive to the Word of God to celebrating that Word made present in theHoly Sacraments. Our tradition is characterized by congregational singing and excellentmusic. It is distinguished by loving pastoral care for the people of God through all of life’scircumstances. It is possessed of a strong commitment to teaching the tenants of the faithand assisting the children of God of all ages to walk in the way of the Cross.

Our tradition also includes an acknowledgement of sorrow for the deep divisions in the

Body of Christ that resulted from the Reformation in the 16 th Century. We pray that suchdivisions will be healed and that the will of Christ for the unity of his Church will bemanifest in our time.

Our church family will observe Reformation on Sunday, October 26 with Festival Worshipat 9:30am.
