Welcome to World Communion Sunday, 2016!
Celebration of World Communion Sunday (originally
World Wide Communion Sunday) is a gift of the Presbyterian
Church to the larger ecumenical church. The first celebration was
at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA in 1933 where
Dr. Hugh Thompson Kerr served as pastor. It was adopted as a
denominational practice in the Presbyterian Church (US) in 1936.
Churches in other denominations were invited to
celebrate with us from the beginning, but it wasn’t until 1940
when the Department of Evangelism of the Federal Council
of Churches (a predecessor body of the National Council of Church-
es) promoted extending the celebration to a number of churches
around the world that the practice became widespread. Today,
World Communion Sunday is celebrated around the world,
demonstrating that the church founded on Jesus Christ peacefully
shares God-given goods in a world increasingly destabilized by
globalization and global market economies based on greed.
On this special day, may we be mindful of ways we can
continue the ancient Christian practice of sharing what we have
with our brothers and sisters, in our church, our community and in
our world as we remember what we share in Christ with the
community of believers around the world.
Join us…
Sunday, October 9
for a very special
Musical Celebration of God!
The FPC Chancel Choir has prepared several anthems
for next Sunday for this special service. Dr. Daniel Shirley, tenor
soloist from the East Carolina University School of Music, will be
joining the choir for this service in addition to several guest/
member instrumentalists.
You will not want to miss this inspiring service!!!

The Times They Are A-Changin'
B ack when I was a wee pup in the
early 1960s, I had cause to be riding
the rails with my family from Chica-
go to New York City on the now decommis-
sioned Phoebe Snow, a wonderful train on
the old Erie Lackawanna line. It being the
early 60’s and the particular season of the
year, nearing Christmas, there were a lot of
college students riding in the car with us,
huddled together with some sitting in the aisle. I still see the scene
vividly. The fellows were clean-cut, preppy dressed with some
sporting goatees and a few with a bit longer hair, though not the
long hair that would become the rage a short few years later. The
girls were casually dressed, wearing jeans and heavy sweaters or
skirts and blouses. At the center of the mix was a soldier, dressed
in uniform, sitting cross-legged on the floor, holding in his hands
an old Martin D-18, strumming it and singing folk songs. Songs like
500 Miles, This Train, and a host of other tunes filled the air, as the
college students, and some of the other passengers joined in the
singing. It was there that I fell in love with folk music and began my
own exploration of the music that would lead me to become, for a
time, a singer-songwriter.
Though I didn’t realize it at the time, the one song among
the many that struck a lasting chord in me was what I later learned
was a ditty by the now folk legend, Bob Dylan. Its title declares it—
The Times They Are A-Changin'—and the lyrics define it:
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone

We Gather to Worship God
20th Sunday after Pentecost/World Communion Sunday
Sunday, October 2, 2016 10:30 A.M.
Words of Welcome and Sharing John Rebholz
Prelude
The Church's One Foundation Samuel S. Wesley
Chris Watkins, Organ
*Invitation to Worship God John Rebholz
Come, the family of God is gathered here! O give thanks
to the Lord, for He is good: for His steadfast love endures
forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.
Those He redeemed from trouble He gathered in from
the east and from the west, from the north and from the
south. Then people will come from east and west, from
north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God.
All the nations You have made shall come and bow down
before You, O Lord, and shall glorify Your name.
For You are great and do wondrous things; You alone are
God.
Come, join the nations in glorifying God’s name!
*Song of Praise Number 409

Admitting Our Faults and Accepting God’s Forgiveness
John Rebholz
Loving God, as we remember Your Church worldwide, we
confess our tendency to focus only on ourselves. We
confess, in our pride, we judge one another. In our self-
sufficiency we fear being dependent on one another. We
know, O God, You call us to be part of your family. Forgive
us. We are a broken people desperately in need of Your
healing. We ask, dear Lord, that You would bind us

together, that we would love and encourage one another and
bring honor to You. Hear us as we continue our confession in
silence…
(Take a few moments for silent, personal confession.)
We have come before our God in humility and with a contrite
heart. Because of this, we are assured of God’s promise of mercy.
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
Amen.
*Singing Praises to Our Father in Heaven
Glory Be to the Father gloria patri
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.
Song of Assurance
Jesus Loves Me! This I Know warner
Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong; they are weak but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me, yes, Jesus loves me,
Yes, Jesus loves me, the Bible tells me so.

*We Say What We Believe Apostles’ Creed John Rebholz
(Two readings: first in several languages, second, entire
congregation; please remain seated for the first reading)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and
earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was
conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered
under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He
descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead:
He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God
the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the
quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy
catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of
sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is truly right and our greatest joy to give You thanks and
praise…
Therefore, we praise You, joining our voices with choirs of
angels, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all the
faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of
Your name:
Hymn Number 552 Holy, Holy, Holy land of rest
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.
You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, Your
Son, our Lord…
Great is the mystery of faith:
Hymn Number 553 Christ Has Died; Christ Is Risen land of rest
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
Gracious God, pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us…
Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the
Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are Yours, almighty Father,
now and forever:
Hymn Number 554 Amen land of rest
Amen...

The Handbell Choir had another
rehearsal last Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. It was
a wonderful rehearsal with all but one returning
ringer. We really need at least two new ringers to
join us if at all possible. The ringers decided that
they would like to meet every-other-Sunday
afternoon for a 90 minute rehearsal so that they
can have a Sunday free to visit relatives and rest during the weekend.
Our schedule of rehearsals on Sundays at 1:00 p.m. for the rest of the
year is as follows:
October 9th , October 23rd , & November 6th - 90 minute
rehearsals
November 13th - The Bells will ring for the 10:30 a.m. worship
service.
November 27th - 90 minute rehearsal
December 18th - The Bells will ring for the 10:30 a.m. worship
service.
Please prayerfully consider joining us. You will have fun, learn to
read music, and enjoy making music for the Lord!
Cherub Choir to Start This Fall! We have
three children (ages 3 years old to younger than First
Grade) who wish to start a Cherub Choir on Wednesdays
afternoons at 4:00 p.m. until 4:45 p.m. We need two
more children to form this new choir. If you have a child
who would love to sing, play rhythm instruments, hear Bible stories,
have a craft project, and enjoy a refreshment on Wednesdays starting in
October, please contact the church office or see Chris Watkins as soon
as possible.
The Chancel Choir has been hard at work on the special anthems
for next week’s special worship service, A Musical Celebration of God,
and we have a guest soloist and musicians coming. Be sure to plan to come
and bring a friend!

PLEASE SEND US CONTACT INFORMATION FOR THOSE WHO ARE
“AWAY”! As our FPC children graduate high school and go off to col-

(Continued, From My Heart to Yours)
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.
To me, the lyrics are as meaningful today as they were way back in
1964. In life, the waters are always whelming around us. Responding to the
needs and changes in life can be difficult. Yet, it is important to face the need
for change and respond accordingly.
Here at FPC, your Session has engaged a series of initiatives to further
our ministry and expand our fruitfulness. They have also made decisions to
make safer all who enter our doors. One such example is a new policy on
protecting children from the dangers of abuse, as well as intentionally adding
age-appropriate play equipment for our children to use outside (it is currently
being constructed and will be installed soon). Additionally, this past Sunday,
those who regularly sit in the balcony were greeted by new and beautifully
designed and crafted safety rails, assuring we protect our loft sitters from the
dangers of tumbling down to the floor below. In each case, those involved are
to be commended for their care and thoughtfulness. You cannot imagine the
hours dedicated to seeing these things to fruition. Servants all, they are too
humble to be singled out, nevertheless, they deserve our deepest gratitude.
There are obviously many more things the Session will be planning
and leading us to do, together. As Mr. Dylan once sang, the time has come to
recognize that things are changing and respond accordingly. I am proud of the
leaders of this, our beloved church, for seeing the needs and responding
accordingly.
