Today is Pentecost, 50 days aſter Easter, 10 days aſter the Ascension of Christ. Pentecost Sunday is somemes called the Church’s birthday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ: us! Some of us wear a special piece of jewellery or keep special something that has been bequeathed from someone we love. It reminds us of them and keeps alive the cherished memories and life lessons we received from them. The Holy Spirit does this but with living, supporve acon. The Holy Spirit is a God-given giſt, sll given today. Don’t look a giſt horse in the mouth. This giſt is as valuable now as ever. The Holy Spirit empowers us to go out and spread the values Christ spoke of and lived. Today is not just a day to look back and celebrate the past, it is a day to make the decision to act, and to live out these Gospel values and to invite others to do the same. Indeed, most importantly, to model these values so that they will be adopted by all in our world; those in our close lives, those in our more loosely connected lives, those in our lives who, deliberately or not, are hidden, disenfranchised and easily overlooked or forgoen. The Holy Spirit transforms. The Holy Spirit is our companion on our earthly journey, in good mes, and, importantly, in bad. The wisdom the Holy Spirit offers is a wisdom mixed with the humility of our own needs and weaknesses, yet faith filled and, thus, finding the confidence to truly live, inving and embracing all others to do the same. Our human self will find it difficult to connue in the face of determined obstrucon. Integrity can be challenged, and we oſten hear of super-human determinaon and fortude direcng acon: The super in the super-human? The Holy Spirit. This faith in acon allows us the intesnal fortude to speak and act in the ways of Christ. The Holy Spirit collaboravely imbues us with a renewed focus and clarity to face the problems and issues in our lives and in the lives of those around us. With the Holy Spirit guiding, nurturing and counselling us we are transformed into our most courageous and determined self, enduring our hardships, learning and sharing lessons, becoming beer and working for beer in our world. One of the reasons why celebrang Pentecost is such a glorious thing is because of its hope-giving power. We live with the same Holy Spirit today, no less powerful than at Pentecost. We need to remember that. The Holy Spirit is our comfort, our seal, our breath and our joy! Today is Pentecost, 50 days after Easter, 10 days after the Ascension of Christ. Pentecost Sunday is

sometimes called the Church’s birthday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the

Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ: us! Some of us wear a special piece of jewellery or

keep special something that has been bequeathed from someone we love. It reminds us of them

and keeps alive the cherished memories and life lessons we received from them. The Holy Spirit

does this but with living, supportive action. The Holy Spirit is a God-given gift, still given today.

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. This gift is as valuable now as ever. The Holy Spirit empowers

us to go out and spread the values Christ spoke of and lived. Today is not just a day to look back

and celebrate the past, it is a day to make the decision to act, and to live out these Gospel values

and to invite others to do the same. Indeed, most importantly, to model these values so that they

will be adopted by all in our world; those in our close lives, those in our more loosely connected

lives, those in our lives who, deliberately or not, are hidden, disenfranchised and easily overlooked

or forgotten. The Holy Spirit transforms. The Holy Spirit is our companion on our earthly journey, in

good times, and, importantly, in bad. The wisdom the Holy Spirit offers is a wisdom mixed with the

humility of our own needs and weaknesses, yet faith filled and, thus, finding the confidence to truly

live, inviting and embracing all others to do the same. Our human self will find it difficult to

continue in the face of determined obstruction. Integrity can be challenged, and we often hear of

super-human determination and fortitude directing action: The super in the super-human? The

Holy Spirit. This faith in action allows us the intestinal fortitude to speak and act in the ways of

Christ. The Holy Spirit collaboratively imbues us with a renewed focus and clarity to face the

problems and issues in our lives and in the lives of those around us. With the Holy Spirit guiding,

nurturing and counselling us we are transformed into our most courageous and determined self,

enduring our hardships, learning and sharing lessons, becoming better and working for better in

our world. One of the reasons why celebrating Pentecost is such a glorious thing is because of its

hope-giving power. We live with the same Holy Spirit today, no less powerful than at Pentecost. We

need to remember that. The Holy Spirit is our comfort, our seal, our breath and our joy!

This weekend we welcome

Penelope Clarke,

Pippa Coucill and

Connor Graham into our Mt Carmel

Community.

From the 24th until the 28th June the Carmelites of Australia and Timor Leste will gather in Melbourne for the Triennium meeting called Provincial Chapter.

This year’s theme chosen for the meeting is: Deep Wells/ Living Water; reminding us of the encounter between Jesus and the woman of Samaria in the Gospel of John ( chapter 4; 5-42). An appropriate theme given the challenges of our ‘cross-cultural living’ within the communities we are now forming, with brothers from Timor Leste and Australia.

The Provincial Chapter is described as a ‘ meeting with the Holy Spirit’ as both brothers and sisters gather in dialogue with one another, set policies and make decisions for our future , and elect a new Team to lead the Carmelite community, and those who minister with us, within the two countries we are actively present in, for the next three years.

There will be about 70 gathering together, brothers from around Australia, Timor Leste, and various representatives from our different places of ministry.

Madeleine Sayer ( Advisory Council), Peter White ( Prior of Lay Carmelites) will come from the Coorparoo community, along with Januario and myself. We would all welcome any input you may wish to express for our coming together.

Please join us in praying the prayer ,in preparation for this most important meeting, of two cultures coming together , and men and women from our places of ministry, to listen, to hear with an attentive silence the movement of God’s Spirit among us:

“ Tender-hearted God, you know our thirst. We ask for the living water, Jesus your Son. As we meet Christ together at the well, may his Spirit re-shape us in his image, form us as brothers and sisters, and overflow in loving words and actions for all people.

Together , seeking the face of the living God like Elijah, may we live in allegiance to Jesus Christ. Our Lady help of Christians pray for us.”
