READINGS FOR SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2020 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Isaiah 55:6-9
Second Reading: Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a
Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16a
FOCUS: God’s love and mercy are never-ending.
Isaiah advises us to seek the Lord, an activity we might
think of as being complete as soon as we come to believe
in him. But really, this is an invitation to grace – a grace
that is constant, always available, and generous in its
forgiveness. It is a promise of deep and perpetual care by
a God who is completely different from us in his thoughts
and ways, and yet never-ending in his love and mercy.
LITURGY OF THE WORD:
Isaiah encourages his people to seek the Lord and ask for
his mercy – God whose thoughts are so far above their
own. Saint Paul tells the Philippians that Christ will be
magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. And
though Paul longs to be with Jesus in the next life, it is
better that he remains with them. In the Gospel, Jesus
tells a parable about workers in a vineyard, emphasizing
the generosity of the landowner to all who labored.
Readings for nest week, September 27: Twenty-Sixth
Sunday in Ordinary Time: Ezekiel 18:25-28, Philippians
2:1-11 or 2:1-5, Matthew 21:28-32

is greatly appreciated.
Besides the upkeep of the Church we would like
to add a note of gratitude to those parishioners
who have given so generously to our Human

THE PASTOR’S PAGE
Dear Friends:
On the subject of a typical Catholic parish, the novelist Rumer Godden once wrote that
“the great thing about a Catholic Church is that it isn’t respectable. You can find anyone
there, from kings to tramps, from duchesses to…” well, let’s just say “bohemians.”
Once again, faith runs counter to the ways in which we expect God “should” act
reaching out to those who appear to be beyond the limits of divine love. On the
contrary, it is often the people who are rejected by the powerful who turn out to be more
malleable to the grace of God. They are no longer interested (if they ever were) in
keeping up with the Joneses, or the Kardashians, or whatever the case may be.
On Monday, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Matthew, the Apostle and Evangelist.
From the gospel that bears his name, we learn that Matthew is performing his job as a
tax collector when he receives the call from Jesus to follow him. Later, as Matthew
reclines with our Lord at dinner, many other people of questionable reputation swarm
the house, thereby scandalizing the respectable Pharisees. Jesus responds to his critics,
not by approving the sinful behavior of those who come to him, but to point out that
they see in him the remedy for it. St. Bede uses this encounter to rhapsodize on the
sheer goodness of God. A man like Matthew knows a thing or two about what is
valuable and what is not: hence his name (“gift/grace of God”). That he would simply
leave his post to follow our Lord indicates that he experiences a powerful interior
conversion to Christ.
At the same time, Jesus proves to be a shrewd investor as well. St. Bede writes: “This
conversion of one tax collector gave many men, those from his own profession and
other singers, an example of repentance and pardon… No sooner was he converted than
Matthew drew after him a whole crowd of sinners along the same road to salvation.”
By reaching out to Matthew, Jesus brings about a conversion in the heart of all those
within his circle of friends, family, and colleagues.
Those of us “at a certain age” realize the value of investing in our future, and perhaps
even in “diversifying” our portfolio. On a spiritual level, we learn a great lesson from
St. Matthew who, feeling touch of God’s grace and acting accordingly, becomes the
cause of many to respond to come back to the Lord.
Faithfully,
Fr. Valentine

Church of St Mary

September 14, 2020 Dear People of St Mary’s, Today we celebrate the Catholic feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. It recognizes two important historical events: the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the emperor Constantine and the dedication of the churches built by Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary. The Cross reminds us of the sacrifice Jesus made for all mankind but as important it symbolizes that our faith conquers the darkness and through the Cross we all can achieve everlasting peace and fulfillment. St. Mary’s Cross that sat majestically atop the steeple of our beautiful Church is being replaced with an exact duplicate of the Cross that had faded into severe deterioration. The Cross Restoration Project is being spearheaded by fellow parishioners Matt Doherty, Ed Escoffier and John Dussel along with several others collectively known as the “Steeple People”. Matt Doherty our resident restoration architect has put in countless hours designing the bracing foundation for the Cross, milling the Honduran mahogany to exact dimensions of the previous Cross and now setting up the new Cross for the wood staining and gold leaf applications. While much work has been accomplished to date, the Steeple People and more St Mary’s volunteers have many more things to do before the new Cross can be raised. Fr. Tim Valentine, our Pastor, has mentioned being approached by Parish members asking if we would accept donations to the Cross Restoration Project. We thought this would be an excellent idea for anyone who would want to be part of this important work for our Church. Any donation large or small will help defray the cost of materials and new electric infrastructure. All labor is completely voluntary and not compensated. Every donor to the Project will know their contribution is part of the illumination of the Cross for everyone to see. Today’s feast Mass entrance antiphon says it best “We should glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, for He is our salvation, our life and our resurrection: through Him we are saved and made free.” If you would like to make a donation, please fill out the slip below and put it in the Church collection basket or mail it to the Rectory at the address above. Thank you and may God Bless you. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
