How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in his excellent Word!
What more can he say than to you he has said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
“Fear not, I am with you, O be not dismayed,
For I am your God, and will still give you aid;
I’ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand,
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.”
“When through the deep waters I call you to go,
The rivers of woe shall not you overflow;
For I will be with you, your troubles to bless,
And sanctify to you, your deepest distress.”
“The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake!”

AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP LOURDESHOUSE!It’s been hard not being able to give to others as directly as we usually do through parish drives and item collections. But we do have a chance next weekend!
Lourdeshouse is the Catholic Charities home for women who have no family support, including homeless women or women coming out of prison. Women can come anytime during their pregnancy and stay a total of eight months at Lourdeshouse. Mothers and infants continue to receive support through the baby’s first year. Next weekend, August 15-16, before and after Masses, we will be collecting the following items in a no-contact drop-off in the parking lot:
• Paper plates (PLEASE, NO STYROFOAM)• Paper bowls• Toilet paper• Paper towels• Plastic cups• Plastic forks/spoonsThank you for your generosity!
THE CONNECTED PARISH When we withdrew to our homes some months ago, every parish and church discovered that we were ill-prepared to remain connected with parishioners through livestreaming and video. Our parish was a bit ahead of many, but we still had to scramble to put all the pieces together. We had a camera for in-house video, but no capacity to stream beyond our walls.
In March we installed a new piece of equipment to allow us to put Sunday Mass into people’s homes and onto the television service at Messiah Lifeways. We began daily meditations, Adoration and prayers, but frequent crashes taught us that we needed a beefier computer to handle all the work. The camera we had for in-house video was just not up to the mission, and so we brought in someone to use his own professional-grade camera to record the Sunday Mass. Since then we’ve received many compliments from people near and far about the quality of our streamed Mass. This week we completed a significant upgrade to the video system, installing three cameras and the equipment to control them. This all works with our existing equipment and will enhance our ability to record and livestream important events in the church, including Mass, weddings, funerals, and sacraments.
As you can imagine, this has not been without cost, but thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our parishioners and a few others who are grateful to receive high-quality streaming every week, about half of the costs have been covered. If anyone wants to discuss the project and its cost with me, especially if you might be able to help with the remaining expenses, I am happy to speak with you.
I am confident that these upgrades will enable us to continue high-quality ministry as a connected parish in the coming years, reaching out to our homebound and to the unchurched in our neighborhoods with the message of the Gospel.
WELCOME DANIEL L. DORTY, our new Director of Music! He is a native of Shippensburg and an alumnus of Messiah College, having studied Sacred Music with a concentration in organ. He was Director of Music for Camp Hill Presbyterian Church and is the pianist and organist for the 4-time Grammy-nominated Susquehanna Chorale. Due to the reduced liturgical schedule at this time, Dan will begin this position on a part-time basis.See the Friday Feed for a video and more infomation about Dan’s life and faith.

A READING FROM THE FIRST BOOK OF KINGS 1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13aAt the mountain of God, Horeb,Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter.Then the LORD said to him, “Go outsideand stand on the mountain before the LORD;the LORD will be passing by.”A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountainsand crushing rocks before the LORD—but the LORD was not in the wind.
After the wind there was an earthquake—but the LORD was not in the earthquake.After the earthquake there was fire—but the LORD was not in the fire.After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.When he heard this,Elijah hid his face in his cloakand went and stood at the entrance of the cave.
Liturgy of the Word
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 85:9, 10, 11-12, 13-14
(R.) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
I will hear what God proclaims;the LORD—for he proclaims peace.Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him,glory dwelling in our land.
(R.) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
Kindness and truth shall meet;justice and peace shall kiss.
Truth shall spring out of the earth,and justice shall look down from heaven.
(R.) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation..
The LORD himself will give his benefits;our land shall yield its increase.Justice shall walk before him,and prepare the way of his steps.
(R.) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.
A READING FROM THE LETTER OF SAINT PAUL TO THE ROMANSBrothers and sisters:I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie;my conscience joins with the Holy Spiritin bearing me witnessthat I have great sorrowand constant anguish in my heart.For I could wish that I myself were accursedand cut off from Christ
for the sake of my own people,my kindred according to the flesh.They are Israelites;theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants,the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises;theirs the patriarchs, and from them,according to the flesh, is the Christ,who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW Matthew 14:22-33
After he had fed the people,Jesus made the disciples get into a boatand precede him to the other side,while he dismissed the crowds.After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.When it was evening he was there alone.Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore,was being tossed about by the waves,for the wind was against it.During the fourth watch of the night,he came toward them walking on the sea.When the disciples saw him walking on the seathey were terrified.“It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.At once Jesus spoke to them,“Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter said to him in reply,“Lord, if it is you,command me to come to you on the water.”He said, “Come.”Peter got out of the boatand began to walk on the water toward Jesus.But when he saw how strong the wind washe became frightened;and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”Immediately Jesus stretched out his handand caught Peter, and said to him,“O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”After they got into the boat, the wind died down.Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying,“Truly, you are the Son of God.”
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION(R.) Alleluia, alleluia.I wait for the Lord;my soul waits for his word.

The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated Tuesdays at 4:30 pm and Thursdays at 11 am. Please come to the main parking lot (not Hertzler Road). The church and chapel will remain closed during these hours. Weather permitting, the priest will hear drive-through confessions in the portico. In inclement weather or other circumstances, confessions will be heard in the Upper Room. If you are not feeling well, or if you have been exposed to anyone with the COVID-19 virus, you should stay at home.
• In order to minimize contact time, it is important that you come prepared to celebrate the sacrament. Before you leave home, make a good and prayerful examination of conscience, asking the Holy Spirit to enlighten your conscience and to show you your sins. Consider making a list of sins to bring to Our Lord in confession:
• Ask the Holy Spirit to show you first your serious sins — that is, any mortal sins you may have committed. Write them down, since you will want to confess these sins.
• Next ask the Holy Spirit to show you your venial sins. You should write these down as well, as they should be confessed, although our day-to-day sins may also be forgiven by devoutly receiving Holy Communion with a sincere sorrow for our sins and sincere intention to avoid them in the future.
• Finally, consider those acts and decisions that may be troubling or causing worry, but are not sins you have committed.These are generally not matters for confession (maybe for pastoral counseling), and should not be brought into the confessional.
• Review what you have written in your list and consider what truly must be confessed at this time.
• Drive into the portico, or enter the room. The priest will welcome you and make the sign of the Cross.• Say: “Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. My last confession was (how long ago) and these are my sins.”• You should also mention your age and your state in life: (student, married, single, widowed, etc.)• You then confess all your serious or mortal sins to the priest. You should also briefly mention your venial sins.• If you are unsure what to say, briefly ask for guidance. Do not lower or remove your mask. Then make a
confession of your sins. Counsel is available by phone outside of confession.• The priest will then give you an appropriate penance.• The Act of Contrition would normally be prayed at this moment, but we ask you at this time to pray an Act of
Contrition before you approach the area for confessions to reduce contact time and possible spread of germs.• The priest will offer the prayer for sacramental absolution. Make the sign of the cross with him at the end.• You then leave, and now or within a few days complete the penance the priest assigned you.• (If you are celebrating the sacrament indoors, please use hand sanitizer before touching the door as you exit
the room.)
○ one person only per vehicle ○ please wear a face mask ○ do not leave your vehicle ○ follow any signs or directions ○ to protect privacy, do not drive into the portico until
the vehicle in front of you has left ○ to protect your privacy, if you are hard of hearing,
please do not use the drive-through option ○ please be aware that the priest may ask you
to return at another time if you are not wearing a mask
○ please wear a face mask ○ use hand sanitizer before you leave your vehicle ○ enter only through the door by the Café ○ use your elbow to push the automatic door opener ○ maintain a six-foot distance from any other person ○ please sanitize the doorknob before entering the
room ○ all confessions will be heard behind a screen (no
face-to-face)
